Description
Owner José Manuel Bento dos Santos, an industrial chemical engineer, has a strong love for the wines of the Northern Rhône. On a unique piece of landscape, 70km north of Lisbon, 15ha of vineyards are ORGANICLY maintained to grow perfect grapes with an extremely low yield of 20-25hl per hectare. With the support of Grégory Viennos (former head winemaker at Chapoutier and Cos d'Estournel) exceptionally fine wines are produced that have found their way into royal cellars and the best European and American restaurants.
Monte d' Oiro 'the golden hill' is a reference to the hill on the Quinta that gets a beautiful golden glow when the sun shines on it. The winery is located in the Appellation Vinho Regional Lisboa.
The Reserva 2017 is a Syrah with a few percent of co-fermented Viognier that has matured for 16 to 20 months on 40% new French oak. Produced from strictly selected grapes with a yield of only 19hl per hectare. The wine is balanced and elegant with a beautiful intensity and power bundled together in this wine. Beautiful balance in fruit tones, spiciness, use of wood with an impressive length in the aftertaste. A top match with grilled meat, stews, game, matured cheeses.

The 2019 Reserva is a Syrah with 4% co-fermented Viognier aged for 16 to 20 months, depending on the plot, in 40% new French oak. It comes in at 13.25% alcohol. On paper, this is pretty similar to the 2018, also reviewed. In the glass, that 2018 might be a little riper, while this is a bit fresher and more expressive. The extra year in the bottle helps the 2018 a lot and makes it the easy choice if opened today, but this might be the better wine in the long run. Its silky texture, tightly wound demeanor and greater elegance will all serve it in good stead as it ages. I loved the juicy finish with lifted fruit. It has just enough depth to balance the structure. Overall, this is refined and sophisticated. It is a wine likely to age well and improve. Give it a year or two in the cellar if you can. This can be approached now, but that is a bad idea; it will improve if you give it time. This runs around 35 euros in Portugal.

This wine region in Portugal, about 50 kilometers north of Lisbon, has been known for its great terroir since the 17th century. In the 1980s, Quinta do Monte d'Oiro came into the hands of José Bento dos Santos, originally an industrial chemical engineer. He combines his passion for quality wine and gastronomy and has received many awards in both areas, both at home and abroad. The 20 hectares of vineyard are organically farmed. Naturally, local grape varieties have been planted such as Touriga Nacional and Arinto, but also the best global varieties such as Petit Verdot and Tempranillo (tinta roriz). The influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the limestone and clay soils give this area its unique terroir. Graça Gonçalves learned winemaking from her father, among others, and played a major role in the switch to organic production at Quinta do Monte d'Oiro.
