Description
The Harlan family have been winemakers in California’s Napa Valley since the late 1970s. Their first endeavor, Harlan Estate, has established an international benchmark for the art of winemaking over the course of nearly four decades. It was in those early days, in the early 1980s, that H. William Harlan discovered another place—an isolated area—while hiking along the southwest ridge of Oakville. The hidden expanse touched him deeply, but remained elusive until much later, when the Harlan family finally acquired it in 2008. The second generations of both the family and the winemaking team came together during this time to explore and work the land, and they began to make discoveries of their own. At the heart of this wild terrain, they found a powerful geological convergence that had shaped the land’s steep, rugged topography and created the conditions for an entirely exotic winegrowing environment. Over time, they discovered that the dramatic landscape—just beyond the edge of the known—would slowly transform them and eventually inspire a new venture: Promontory. Eleven hectares of the original vineyard have been preserved due to the interesting age of these Cabernets. Another 16 hectares are still being replanted parcel by parcel.
After an unusually dry and warm winter, bud formation occurred in the third week of March, signaling an early start to the 2015 growing season. Colder weather during flowering led to lower fruit set, which, combined with minimal rainfall over the past three years, resulted in small yields. Several heat waves in late summer brought high temperatures. These incidents were particularly challenging in August and September, and so the vines had to use all available resources to maintain a regular ripening path. Harvest began very early – September 8 – but the cool climate of the area tempered this, allowing harvesting to continue for four weeks. Nearly fifty-four harvest passes were completed, resulting in forty different vinifications. The wine showed generosity and balance from the start, while retaining the innate drive that is so typical of Promontory.
Deep garnet in colour, the Promontory bursts from the glass with showy red berry, black cherry compote and warm cassis notes plus hints of cinnamon, rose, unsmoked cigar and fragrant earth. On the palate this superb Napa is full bodied, the flavours are rich and powerful, with layer upon layer of red and black fruit with lots of mineral notes. The structure is rock solid with firm, rugged tannins that begin to balance the flamboyant fruit, finishing with plenty of length and a lively lift. Parker writes in his review: "This is certainly among the most profound of the 2017 Napa Cabernets and for followers of this vineyard, not one to be missed"

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Promontory has a wonderfully fragrant nose of baked blackberries, plum preserves and black currant pastilles with an undercurrent of star anise, violets, espresso and tilled earth. Medium to full-bodied, it is soft-spoken and elegantly styled in the mouth, featuring skillfully managed, grainy tannins and bags of juicy black fruits, finishing long, earthy and remarkably energetic. This is certainly among the most profound of the 2017 Napa Cabernets and for followers of this vineyard, not one to be missed.
During a visit to Promontory in December, I tasted the four latest vintages with winemaker David Cilli, Cory Empting and Will Harlan.
The current release is the 2015 vintage, recently offered on the domestic market with the international offer coming out this spring.
It was an absolute joy to taste the perfect 2016 Promontory again, a wine that Cilli mentioned "so clearly shows the characteristics of Promontory."
Of the 2017 (now in bottle), Cilli said, “We were not able to pick the last few Promontory blocks because of the fires, so it was a very small harvest this year. We had picked a few lots just after the heat spells, and we were able to maintain that freshness in the wine."
The 2018 vintage was tasted as a barrel sample, due to be bottled in early 2021. Cilli said, "We picked for six weeks at Promontory. I picked maybe 90 different lots!" Given the many, incredibly varied aspects, altitudes and soil types at this remote vineyard, this kind of parcel separation is critical to producing a wine of exceptional quality. This 2018 is truly a wine achievement to behold.

From: Napa Valley: The Frantic 2020s & Stunning 2021s (Feb 2023)
The 2017 Promontory is vibrant, focused and bristling with energy. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, crushed rocks and flowers convey energy, with floral notes that continue to open with aeration. This is an especially mid-weight, nervous vintage for Promontory, and yet all the elements are so well balanced. The 2017 is going to be a spectacular wine, in a number of years. This is one of its best showings.

Promontory is on a slightly later release schedule than Harlan Estate and Bond, so these are the current releases. Winemaker David Cilli has done a tremendous job in giving the Promontory Cabernet a great deal of finesse, especially over the last few years. Although I can’t say it for certain, because I don’t know, my strong impression is that his wines have notably influenced the recent stylistic direction at Harlan Estate and Bond.

From: The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets: A Deep Dive (Jan 2022)
The 2017 Promontory is really starting to come together nicely. The Promontory wines have always benefitted from time in bottle, as the 2017 once again makes clear. In 2017, the red-toned fruit profile is a strong marker. Rose petal, lavender, blood orange and lively acids lend vibrancy throughout. The 2017 is a bit lower in alcohol than most vintages, owing to a freakish reversal in sugar ripeness brought on by very hot days at the end of the season. Winemaker David Cilli gave the 2017 32 months in cask, a bit longer than usual, to help all the elements come together, a choice that has paid off handsomely.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2021
Many years ago, Bill Harlan told me he wanted to show me something. He took out a set of maps and rolled them out on a table in the original Promontory winery. He talked of a place that sounded mystical, right out of a fairy tale. He called it “the territory.” The place was Promontory. Whereas Harlan Estate and Bond remain very linked to the specific eras when they were founded, Promontory is all new. It is where vineyard and winery experiments happen first. Promontory has ascended into the stratosphere in a very brief period of time.
These days, the Harlan empire is run by Will Harlan and Winemaker Cory Empting, who have entrusted Winemaker David Cilli with Promontory. Cilli, in turn, has responded with set of stunning wines culminating with the extraordinary 2018. In addition to being made from a very special and rugged piece of land, Promontory is distinguished by its relatively long élevage (by Napa standards) in cask, which is not seen at all in Napa, with the exception of a few very old school estates.

The 2017 Promontory is showing beautifully, despite its recent bottling about six months ago. Sweet red cherry fruit, iron, smoke, licorice and dried herbs are all finely knit together. Promontory is a mountain wine that needs time. That will certainly be the case with the 2017. I expect it will start to shut down within the next few months, but today it is surprisingly expressive. Blood orange and floral notes linger, adding a very pretty, exotic flair.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2020
The wines spent 15-20 days on the skins, depending on the year, followed by 32-34 months in wood, all large neutral Stockinger casks. The large ovals, a format rarely seen in Napa Valley, seem to give Promontory a real feeling of translucence that is incredibly distinctive. In the early days, Promontory was vinified following the standard Harlan protocol, but in recent years winemaker Davide Cilli has tailored his approach more specifically to the site, which has resulted in a series of utterly magnificent wines. Readers may want to take a look at my recent article on Penultimate, the newest wine from Promontory, which I reviewed a few months ago
