The 2021 Pierre Girardin Éclat de Calcaire Bourgogne Chardonnay is a remarkable white wine from Burgundy, produced by the young and talented winemaker Pierre Girardin. Representing the 13th generation in a family of winemakers, Pierre has quickly made a name for himself in the wine world since his first harvest in 2017. This particular Bourgogne Blanc is produced from 100% Chardonnay grapes, coming from carefully selected plots:
- 80% from Meursault, with plots in the lieux-dits Les Magny, Les Herbeux and Murger des Limozins.
- 10% from Volnay, specifically from the Monpoulain plot.
- 10% from Pommard, from the L'Aumône plot.
Pierre Girardin strives to create wines with purity and precision. For this wine, he uses 456-liter barrels (30% of which are new oak) for fermentation and maturation for 9 months. The wine is then matured for a further 4 months in stainless steel tanks. This approach minimizes the influence of wood and emphasizes the freshness and minerality of the wine. The Éclat de Calcaire (literally "limestone sparkle") shows a bright and lively character with aromas of citrus and stone fruit on the nose, with subtle mineral notes. On the palate, the Pierre Girardin Éclat de Calcaire Bourgogne Chardonnay has a fresh acidity combined with a light creaminess, resulting in a harmonious and balanced finish.

ABOUT PIERRE GIRARDIN

Pierre Girardin is the 13th generation of his family to make wine in Burgundy. He grew up learning in the cellar of his father, Vincent Girardin, from a young age. When the elder Girardin sold his domaine in 2011, he made sure to keep 4.5 hectares of his best sites to one day pass on to his son. In 2017, Pierre-Vincent made his first vintage and announced himself as a rising star in Burgundy. Thanks to his father’s extensive contacts in Burgundy, Pierre-Vincent has been able to supplement his domaine vineyards through long-term contracts with top growers who adhere to his meticulous viticultural philosophy. Together, it represents a portfolio of terroir rarely seen under one roof, including such rare sites as village-level Puligny Folatières (Lalou Bize-Leroy bottles the only other parcel from this part of Folatières), Volnay Clos des Chênes, Pommard Epenots, Corton and even Montrachet itself. To make white wines with the purity, cut and precision he desires, Pierre-Vincent commissioned custom 456L barrels from Francois Freres to reduce the amount of new wood influence. For the reds, all are crafted with an eye toward elegance and silkiness, highlighting the exceptional terroir Pierre is working with. This means a long, gentle press, followed by little to no pigeage, unfined and unfiltered bottling. In the many years Skurnik has worked with some of Burgundy’s top talent, it’s rare for a producer’s first vintage to arrive with such a clear and definitive voice. As Pierre explains, he learned from and helped his father in the cellar from the time he could walk. His fondest childhood memories include chasing the tractor through the vineyards and being near the barrels while his father worked. Simply put, Burgundy is in his blood.

Pierre-Vincent Girardin is the 13th generation of his family to make wine in Burgundy. He grew up learning in the basement of his father, Vincent Girardin, from an early age. When the oldest Girardin sold his domain in 2011, he made sure to keep 4.5 acres of his best sites to ever pass on to his son.

In 2017, Pierre-Vincent made his first vintage and announced himself as an emerging talent in Burgundy. Thanks to his father's extensive contacts in Burgundy, Pierre-Vincent was able to supplement his domaine vineyards through long-term contracts with top growers who maintain his rigorous wine-growing philosophy. Together it represents a portfolio of terroir rarely seen under one roof, including rare locations like Puligny Folatières at the village level (Lalou Bize-Leroy bottles the only other plot from this part of Folatières), Volnay Clos des Chênes, Pommard Epenots, Corton and even Montrachet himself. To make white wines with the purity, cut and precision he desires, Pierre-Vincent ordered custom 456L barrels from Francois Freres to reduce the amount of new wood influence. For the red wines, they are all made with elegance and silky smoothness in mind, and emphasize the extraordinary terroir with which Pierre works. This means a long and gentle press, followed by little to no pigeage uncured and unfiltered bottling. In the many years that Skurnik has worked with some of the top talent in Burgundy, it is rare for a producer's first vintage to arrive with such a clear and definitive voice. As Pierre explains, he learned from and helped his father in the basement from the moment he could walk.
