Description
The 2019 Numanthia is very balanced and serious with well integrated oak and a soft palate with round tannins. It was fermented with selected yeasts and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels of 225 and 600 liters, 60% of which were new. The bouquet shows great fruit concentration and clarity. The aromatics are almost Médoc-like. The palate is full-bodied with intense tannins, but it has a silky texture. The palate is warm, but also very fresh and there is real attack on the mid-palate with hints of graphite. This wine should be on the wish list (and very high) of every Toro lover.
FACT: Numanthia belonged to the Eguren family wineries (such as Sierra Cantabria, Teso la Monja) and a few years ago it was bought by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

The eponymous 2019 Numanthia is a selection from over 100 small plots averaging 75 years of age. It reflects a warm and ripe year with its 15.5% alcohol and is a powerful and generous red with a full-bodied palate and plenty of ripe black fruit and spices from the élevage. It matured in 60% new barrels and 40% second- and third-use barrels, 20% of them 400-liter ones, for a period of 18 months. The oak feels better integrated in the wine, the tannins are fine-grained, and there is nice balance. 86,000 bottles and 750 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2021.
The vineyards from the LVMH group in Toro continue the process to obtain organic certification, and 90% of the grapes are already certified. They are replacing the vats with smaller ones and the barriques with foudres to adjust the impact of the oak in their wines. They are planting new vines following the keyline system and are creating an experimental plot with a selection of their old vines, looking for plots with a better balance between pH and acidity. In general, they are changing the style of the wines toward less ripeness, extractions and oak. They have 85 hectares in property, lease another 21 and have long-term contracts with the owners of a further 34. With that, they produce an average of 250,000 bottles per year.

From: Reds From Toro: Old Vines and New Knowhow (Dec 2023)
The 2018 Numanthia, sourced from old vines in Toro, spent 18 months in French oak (60% new, 1/5 in 400-liter barrels). Garnet in hue. It exudes red fruits, plums and wild herbs on the nose, with cedar, vanilla, dried flowers and furniture wax. Dry and rich, it offers a creamy, overwhelming palate with polished tannins and a silky texture, leading to a plush, flavorful finish. This is a well-balanced and nuanced Toro.

Established in the late 1990s in Valdefinjas, Toro, Numanthia quickly gained a reputation, becoming part of the LVMH portfolio in 2005. Numanthia produces red wines in its simple yet charming winery, where small tanks are the norm. Since 2015, they have been experimenting with new regional wine styles featuring slightly less structure and fresher fruits. The eloquent result is evident in the 2018 Numanthia. This year, the estate will release a new wine, a blend of vintages aged in barrels and amphorae, called Termanthia Ipse. Jesús Jiménez is the technical director.

The Numanthia vineyards are located next to the small village of Valdifinjas in the province of Zamora. The vineyard was founded in 1998 by the Eguren family from the Rioja region. From the beginning, Marcos and Miguel Eguren's goal was to produce the best wines from the Toro region. The company was later bought by the French luxury products giant LVMH.This region is located in the south-east of the province of Zamora and covers 62,000 hectares. Toro wines are made exclusively from one grape variety: The Tinta de Toro. Bodegas Numanthia harvests very selectively, resulting in one of the lowest yields in the world, namely 2000 to 3000 kg. per hectare.
