Description
In wine, nothing is as constant as the land. Vintages offer variation, as do winemakers and owners. Mother Nature is fickle and always wants the last word. But the land is a constant, its geology and composition unalterable. At the heart of every great wine lies a piece of land unlike any other. Eisele Vineyard, first planted to vines in the 1880s, is located in the northeastern Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga at the foot of the Palisades Mountains. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000. The wines produced from this remarkable site have a rare combination of frank character with precisely defined flavors and fine textures, deep concentration without any sense of heaviness, and the ability to develop deep complexity with age. The Eisele Vineyard was originally planted to Zinfandel and Riesling in the 1880s, and has been continuously vined ever since. The first Cabernet was planted in 1964. Besides the Cabernet, Eisele is now also famous for their Sauvignon Blanc. Fantastic white from Napa Valley with again a great storage potential.
The 2017 Eisele Cabernet is a full-bodied wine with a velvet glove. The 2017 vintage was characterized by very small berries. The wine has a deep, dark garnet color that indicates a rich heart of spicy fruit. The nose opens with intense floral notes of violets and fresh blue fruit, typical of the Eisele Vineyard terroir, with a subtle scent of roasted meat jus. Over time, ripe cherries and tobacco leaves emerge. The mouthfeel is fresh, precise and deliciously savory, with great concentration. The tannins are very fine and tightly woven, with a coconut powdery texture and notes of Darjeeling tea. Layers of dark fruit linger in the long finish. This wine has great aging potential. The Eisele Vineyard - Cabernet Sauvignon is a highly prized wine among wine lovers for its complex flavors and its rich, full structure. It is a wine that goes perfectly with grilled or stewed meat dishes and also with a strong cheese. This wine is suitable to drink now, but can also be stored for a few years. In the ratings this wine often gets high marks. This is a magnum of 1.5 liters

Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep garnet-purple color and is a little sluggish to reveal its fragrant core of plum preserves, crème de cassis, blueberry compote and Morello cherries with accents of stewed Darjeeling tea, underbrush, cloves and tobacco leaf plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate struts it stuff with amazing poise, structured with very fine, ripe tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and perfumed.
“It was the four hot days in June 2017 that impacted our vines most—it gave us tiny berries,” said Eisele Vineyard's winemaker Hélène Mignot. “Very tiny berries meant we had very little juice—we had to be very gentle on extraction. Then we had to take our time with macerations, to make sure we got all the good stuff. We had to adjust the toast for our barrels. We used more toast to extract less tannins. We pushed bottling time too—we bottled one month later. In the end, everything fell into place, but we had to be patient. This was not our usual recipe. Each lot had to be considered carefully. We had to let go of what is usually one of our better lots, because the tannins just didn’t get there. Production is down about 30% this year.” Like other Napa wineries where quality is of utmost consideration, Eisele Vineyard has managed to produce a very impressive pair of 2017 reds that demonstrate sensitive crafting and remarkable poise.
“2018 was nice for us—it was an easy vintage,” Mignot continued. “The conditions for ripening were ideal. It was a nice, cool summer. We didn’t have too much problem with vigor. Our vines are 25 years old, so our yields remained 2.5-3 tons per acre. It was a long harvest because we could harvest when we wanted. This year was the highest color we ever recorded!” Like many of the best 2018s I’m tasting from barrel right now, Eisele Vineyard’s 2018s are packed with purity, vibrancy and energy. I expect the finished wines will be real head turners.

Aromas of blueberries and currants and floral hints, such as violets, with subtle minerality. Opens into true beauty and pureness of fruit. Medium to full body. Seamless tannins spread across the palate. Shows finesse and focus and the true character of Eisele. Beautifully crafted. Try after 2023, but already a joy to taste.

Eisele Vineyard, first planted with vines in the 1880s, is located in the northeastern Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga at the base of the Palisades Mountains. Grown organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, the site has been devoted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon for the last fifty years. Beginning with its inaugural release called Eisele in 1971, this iconic vineyard has consistent recognition for owning one of Napa Valley's great terroirs. The wines invariably express the exceptional depth, elegance and longevity that characterize the Eisele vineyard.
Since 1971, some of California's most famous Cabernet Sauvignons have been made from grapes grown in the Eisele Vineyard, located on an alluvial slope near the north end of the Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. Protected by the Palisades Mountains to the north and cooled by the western breezes of the Chalk Hill Gap, this 38-acre vineyard is planted on well-drained boulder soils that produce a low-yielding crop of exceptionally concentrated fruit.
The wines produced in this remarkable place have a rare combination of frank character with precisely defined flavors and fine textures, deep concentration without any sense of heaviness, and the ability to develop deep complexity with age. The Eisele vineyard was originally planted in the 1880s in Zinfandel and Riesling, and has been continuously covered with vines ever since. The first Cabernet was planted in 1964. In addition to the Cabernet, Eisele is now also famous with their Sauvignon Blanc. Fantastic white from Napa Valley with great aging potential again.
