Description
The historic and emblematic wine of Domaine Ponsot – the grapes come from old vines that are 2/3 in the original climate “Clos de la Roche” (Morey-Saint-Denis) and 1/3 at the foot of the hill in the “Clos des Monts-Luisants”. Grand Cru Clos de la Roche combines power and elegance. Complex and perfectly balanced, it is a great wine for laying down, structured, with extremely silky tannins.
Clos de la Roche (3.2 ha) has vines with an average age of 65 years (Vieille Vignes). Domaine Ponsot produces around 10,000 bottles per year. The soil consists of lean, clayey soil with limestone scree on a base of fine Premeaux and Comblanchien limestone. The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled wooden barrels with indigenous yeasts. The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barrels of around 20 years old (never new barrels).

The first vintage produced since the departure of Laurent Ponsot, the 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of rose petal, wild berries, plums, sweet spices, wood smoke and rich soil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and velvety, with an elegantly textural attack, excellent depth and concentration and an ample chassis of fine-grained tannins that are almost entirely concealed by a generous core of vibrant fruit. The finish is long, intense and stony. One of the wines of the vintage, this magical Clos de la Roche stands out for its striking dimension and completeness.
The 2017 vintage is Domaine Ponsot's first since the departure of Laurent Ponsot, so I'm delighted to report that it's not merely a resounding success for the new team, but that Ponsot has produced some of the wines of the vintage. What has changed? The new team has made a few small refinements in technique. Fixed must lines, for example, are no longer used to transport the grapes from destemmer to tank: instead, the berries fall into a sump that's emptied into the tanks by forklift—a technique both more delicate and more sanitary. White grapes are no longer crushed before pressing. But the Ponsot style—characterized by late harvesting, complete destemming and élevage without any new oak—is faithfully respected. As is often the case, the domaine was among the last to harvest in the Côte de Nuits, and that decision seems to have paid off in the form of wines that are among the most concentrated and intense of the vintage, and which show not the slightest trace of overripeness. In short, 2017 is at this address a worthy successor to a superb 2016 vintage. Rose-Marie Ponsot, Alexandre Abel and the whole Ponsot team should be very proud indeed.

From: Back to Burgfest: 2017 Reds – Blind (Jan 2022)
The 2017 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru does not quite deliver the same complexity as its peers, coming across earthier and more backward, though it does develop a very attractive mineral element. It frays at the edges in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, clean, red berry fruit and a touch of black pepper, but it lacks a bit of complexity and feels a little forced and pruny on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
