Description
In the medieval village of Laguardia, the future of La Rioja has developed in the cellars of Artadi. Without a doubt, this masterpiece is due to the brilliant and creative work of Juan Carlos López, assisted today by his son Carlos.
When Juan Carlos turned the cooperative into an independent 'bodega' in 1992, he had already been in charge of it for 7 years. His vision was revolutionary and destroyed the whole of Rioja, but in no time he managed to make the best wines from Spain, which immediately conquered the entire world. Short pruning in the vineyards, resulting in very small yields, and the use of French oak barrels were just some of his innovative ideas. Even more important was the 'early' bottling of his wines, in contrast to the traditional Riojas, which were sometimes stored for up to 10 years in large wooden 'foudres'. With this he also consciously stepped aside from the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva classification.
All wines in their range are made exclusively from the Tempranillo grape, which was born in Rioja and can also provide the best quality here. The range covers 3 wines in which Viñas de Gain is their base wine. This wine is the great example of the best Rioja wines and is often used as a reference point. Without a doubt the best quality wine for its price!!
Only the best grapes from the old vineyards are selected for Pagos Viejos, which come from the best terroirs throughout Rioja. Consequently, it is no wonder that this wine is a true explosion of fruit, structure and elegant tannins. This wine owes its perfect balance to 14 months of oak barrel aging. Only in the very best years is this selection made into superior Grandes Añadas.
Viña el Pison comes from a unique piece of land of 2.4 hectares where the subsoil and the location of the vineyard to the sun are exceptional tenors. With an average age of 65 years, the vines produce nothing but the very best, but unfortunately also very limited, which makes this stunner so unique!
The 2017 El Pison from Artadi is a worthy successor to the 2014 and 2016. The Viña El Pisón is the most aromatic of all single-vineyard bottlings from Artadi. It opens with aromas of violets and Asian herbs similar to a Rioja version of a Chambolle-Musigny or Vosne-Romanée. The nose is very spicy, ripe and intoxicating with open and expressive aromas of croissants, herbal tea, aromatic herbs and balsamic vinegar that is already remarkably complex for its young age, so that promises something with age. The El Pisón is very complete and is a very complex wine. Only 6600 bottles were produced and the wine has been awarded 98/100 points by Parker. It is named after a 2.4 hectare plot planted in 1945 in the village of Laguardia. The vineyard is an amphitheater with varying soils of limestone, clay and sandstone with a deep combination of limestone and silt. The grapes underwent a 24 to 48 hour cold soak and fermentation with native yeasts in oak barrels for 10-12 days, during which time the grapes were trampled twice a day. It matured for nine months in French oak barrels. There is something mysterious about this Pisón; it is subtle and elegant, a bit austere and reserved at first. The palate is seamless, silky with very refined tannins, with stunning balance and a very long, clean and precise finish. This is super. In June 2020, 6,600 bottles were filled.

The perfumed, nuanced and fragrant nose of 2017 Viña El Pisón clearly tells you this wine has something special. It's a very consistent vineyard, the one that seems to deliver irrespective of the character of the year. This wine combines power with finesse. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very fine with a chalky texture that clings to your teeth and makes the finish long and very tasty. 4,467 bottles were filled in July 2019.
I tasted the bottled 2017s that delivered what the unbottled samples promised, with stellar performances of El Pisón, El Carretil and San Lázaro. 2017 was a warm year of low yields marked by spring frosts. The 2017s are being released now.
2018 on the other hand, feels more like 2016, cooler and fresher, with a crop that delivered quality and quantity. I tasted the wines from stainless steel where they were resting after their élevage in oak that has been shortened to eight to 10 months.
It was a year of better yields that was picked in two parts, because grapes were ripening but the sugars were not going up, so they could wait a bit more. The wines have retained very good freshness while they achieved full flavors. They are elegant, perfumed and with very fine tannins. They should mature for a further nine to 10 months in stainless steel and be bottled in the summer of 2020. They seem to have the fresh fruit of 2016, with very round, ripe tannins.
According to Juan Carlos López de la Calle from Artadi, "2016 was marked by a mild winter with scarce rainfall. A rainy spring provided the vineyard with an important water reserve that favored a vigorous budding and vegetative development. Summer was unusually warm, which resulted in very healthy grapes. Drought meant that by the second week of September the vineyards were in good condition but somewhat stressed and close to a stop. The 23.6 liters of rainfall recorded along the second week of September made possible that the development of the cycle continued until 3rd November, when we finished picking our grapes. It was a generous crop of healthy grapes that has given us open and clean wines with fruit aromas, full of life and energy." A year with good yields, less alcohol and more elegant wines.
As for 2017, López de la Calle did not want to miss the opportunity to talk about the April 28th frost in their region. He said it took "a percentage of our crop, and we were unable to do anything." Similar to what they saw in most vineyards in northern Spain, yields were small and the vines got stressed by heat, which resulted in wines with more structure, more power and more rusticity but without the elegance of 2016. Carlos López de la Calle (Juan Carlos's son) defines them as "austere, with some tannins that might require some more time in bottle, a little like 2004 or 2006—tannic years." They lost some 25% of the volume, and the wines are ripe, quite fruit-driven and powerful.
There are nine single-vineyard bottlings in 2016, some very small and labeled "Collectors," which are sold to club members who are made members as soon as they visit the winery. In 2017 there will be more members, as they made 12 wines, but they have not yet decided if a couple of the wines will be bottled on their own and offered to club members.

This is very tight and focused with precise tannins that run deep and long on the palate. Character of blackberries, tar and slate. It’s medium-to full-bodied with freshness and excellent focus on the finish for the vintage. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2022.
