Description
Elvio Cogno is located on top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area of Piedmont. This is one of the eleven municipalities where Barolo is produced. The cellar is located in an 18th century manor house, the farm is surrounded by 11 hectares of vineyards. The Cogno family has been making wine in the Langhe area for 4 generations. The history and tradition were passed down by father Elvio and the innovation was introduced by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore. They only grow native grape varieties: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Nascetta.
The 2016 Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena is a dark and savory wine and is the top wine of this famous winery from Piedmont. The bouquet is extremely fine and equally complex with dried berries, roasted herbs, tar, forest floor and freshly shaved truffle. That truffle note gives the wine a lot of territorial identity and immense charm. The tannins are integrated and show a very fine and polished nature. Only 4,000 bottles of this top barolo have been produced and is expected to be ready to drink from 2020 and has a drinking window until 2050 + 97/100 Parker

The Elvio Cogno 2016 Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena represents a tremendous effort and a wine that makes the best of an iconic vintage and a celebrated territory. The Ravera cru of Novello is making some of the best new Barolos today, and it definitely made some of the best expressions from the 2016 vintage. The bouquet is mostly primary and bright, but there are light hints of age that are already beginning to appear. They include licorice, tar and camphor ash. This elegant wine exists in only 5,000 bottles made.

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena is such a complete wine. Elegant, deep and powerful, like only great Barolo can be, the Vigna Elena possesses tons of nuance and dimension from the very first taste. Exotic spice and orange zest notes open first. Ripe raspberry, mocha and autumn leaves develop later. The Vigna Elena is an absolute delight.

From: 2016 Barolo: Right Place, Right Time (Feb 2020)
The 2016 Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena captures all the best qualities of the Cogno house style in this vintage. Supple and racy with gorgeous mid-palate sweetness, the 2016 is aromatically expressive and generous. Already impeccable in its balance, the 2016 has all the ingredients to develop into a truly special wine - actually, it already is one. This really fleshes out nicely with time, expanding all the way through to the finish.

Walter Fissore and Nadia Cogno's 2016s are absolutely gorgeous. Readers will get a very good idea about the strength of the year in tasting the Cascina Nuova, the estate's entry-level Barolo. The 2016s spent 30-40 days on the skins, with submerged cap fermentation. Malolatic fermentation took place in steel, after which the wines were racked to cask for élevage.

Thanks to careful management of the vineyard, a low yield per hectare with respect for the biological balance, high-quality grapes are created. Balanced, elegant wines with a classic character.
In 2014, Elvio Cogno was voted “winery of the year” for the 4th (!) Time by the renowned American wine magazine “Wines & Spirits”. A very prestigious award that again places this winery among the top 100 best vineyards in the world.
