Description
When you hear the name Christian Moueix in the wine world, you immediately think of a legend. The famous wines of Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux and its reference point Cabernet in Napa on Dominus Estate are iconic, almost priceless and this magical touch continues its work on the famous Napanook estate. The Napanook is the 2nd wine from the Dominus Proprietary line. The first wine is the name of the winery so simply Dominus Proprietary Red Wine and the 3rd wine is the Dominus Othello. In addition to the serious price difference between the 3 wines, another major difference is accessibility. Everything is top quality because it is from Dominus, but the Napanook and the Othello are made from the younger sticks
Dominus Napanook Proprietary Red Wine is a very deep purple-black color, the Napanook is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, matured in 20% new oak. A beautiful perfume of violets, anise, truffles and lavender over a core of warm cassis, blackberries and ripe plums plus hints of cedarwood (cigar box), chocolate and cardamom. The palate is medium to full and firmly structured with very ripe tannins, gradually revealing layers of black and blue fruits with lots of earthy notes, ending with amazing freshness and depth.
FACT: The Dominus Proprietary Red Wine has been chosen by Wine Spectator as the best wine in the world in 2021.
ABOUT DOMINUS ESTATE
Dominus Estate, from renowned winemaker and CEO Christian Moueix (also owner of Pétrus, Trotanoy, La Fleur-Petrus, Hosanna, among others), is part of the Historical Landmark Napanook and is widely regarded as one of the oldest vineyards (1836) from Napa Valley, California.
The estate was purchased in 1946 by legendary winemaker and visionary John Daniels, and passed to his daughters in 1970. These entered into a partnership with Christian Moueix in 1982, which led to the creation of Dominus Estate. Moueix bought all the shares in 1995 and is therefore now the sole owner. The first Dominus wine appeared in 1983 and immediately gained international attention thanks to the influence of Moueix.
Dominus Estate produces a second wine, Napanook, first launched in 1996, and a third called “Othello”, an entry-level wine. The domain covers 44 hectares, divided into 14 plots with mainly cabernet sauvignon (87%). However, there is also some petit verdot and cabernet franc. The Merlot grape has not been used for the “Grand Vin” since 2002, but it still appears occasionally in Napanook wines.
Built in 1996, the winery is made of stones held together with metal wire and represents the terroir of the vineyard. The architectural style is completely in harmony with the landscape and protects against the heat of the day and the cold of the night.

A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the fruit for the 2020 Napanook (like the 2020 Dominus) was picked prior to the start of the Glass Fire on September 27. Scents of redcurrants and cherries lead the way, bolstered by notes of dark chocolate and mocha. It's medium to full-bodied and silky in feel, despite a touch of warmth on the palate, while the long finish picks up a hint of red capsicum and a touch of coarseness.
Director of Viticulture and Winemaking Tod Mostero pointed out that low-rainfall years—like 2020—can be some of the best performers at Dominus. That said, when rainfall is just a bit more than half of the average of the past 25 years, it can't help but impact the wine. Coupled with the season's warmth, yields were down substantially. According to Mostero, the grapes were going through veraison by the end of July, and were then hit by three successive heat episodes: August 13–15, with temperatures hitting 102, 106 and 108 degrees Fahrenheit; August 18–19, with temps peaking at 102 and 106; and September 5–7, with highs of 105, 112 and 114. Even with the fruiting-zone misters, which can drop temperatures by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, and the site's dry farming, crews had to go through the vineyard to drop raisined and sunburned fruit. After picking, the fruit was then sorted extensively by hand and run through an optical sorter. Harvesting wrapped up prior to the Glass Fire ignition on September 27. "We set up HEPA filters to try to keep the smoky air out of the winery as much as we could," said Mostero. "When we taste, smoke isn't an issue, but we taste the heat spikes; and we produced only 30% of a normal crop."

Aromas of currants, blackberries, fresh mushrooms and flowers. Medium-bodied with compacted fruit and integrated, fine tannins. Ripe fruit with reserve. Attractive and alluring. Excellent structure. 88% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Give it at least five years to open and soften, but very attractive now.

The vineyard's origins at the Napa Valley cult winery Dominus Estate date back to 1836, when it was known as the Napanook Vineyard. This makes it one of the oldest vineyards in California, and therefore also in the United States. Napanook later became part of the Inglenook winery, which in turn became the property of California wine pioneer John Daniel in 1946. After his death, his daughters Robin Lail and Marcia Smith inherited the 44-hectare Napanook vineyard in 1982 and asked oenologist Christian Moueix to partner with them. At the time, Christian Moueix was director and winemaker responsible for top Bordeaux wine estates such as Petrus, Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus. With the first vintage 1983 of this new Californian
winery Christian Moueix chose the name Dominus Estate. The fact that Christian Moueix has pledged his heart to Dominus Estate, of which he has been the sole owner since 1995, is apparent from his total dedication and commitment to achieve the ultimate result.
