Description
Winery Domenico Clerico
In 1976 Domenico Clerico took over the company from his father together with his wife Giuliana. The company had 4.5 ha of vineyards located in the most beautiful places in the Barolo area in Piemonte. Domenico now has 21 hectares of vineyard in the Barolo area in Montforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba. No insecticides, pesticides or fertilizers are used in the vineyards. He likes to release single vineyard wines, because in his opinion they best reflect the terroir. His wines are typically rich, aromatic and relatively easy to approach even when young. All in all, a producer who is internationally acclaimed for going to great lengths to make quality wines that are balanced and for constantly reviewing his methods in search of perfection.
Domenico Clerico Ciabot Mentin Barolo
The Barolo Ciabot Mentin is one of the most beautiful versions of this beautiful house from Piemonte. As with previous vintages, this wine is distinguished by its intense inner energy and its richness of texture. There is muscle and determination here, and you can feel that now especially in the youth of the wine, so that promises something for later. In the glass, the wine has a beautiful red color with very complex tones and layers of fruit (cherry, blackberry) in the nose, but also tar, rose petals, smoky tones, balsamic, herbs and spices. In the mouth a soft attack, an enormous concentration and structure with a lot of freshness, finesse and strength. Very long finish.

The 2013 Barolo Ciabot Mentin shines bright in this tasting of excellent new releases from Domenico Clerico. As with past vintages, this wine is distinguished by the intense inner energy it delivers from deep within and by the unyielding nature of its textural richness. There is muscle power here and determination, and you feel it especially now, in the wine's youth. At the same time, it is blazing to move forward. The wine offers an important sense of longevity that starts with a focused and immediate delivery of dark fruit, spice, tar and smoke. As these aromas continue to emerge from the glass, they become more linear, focused and elongated with time. Barolo Ciabot Mentin offers this magical transformation in this classic vintage.
I wrote about the passing of Domenico Clerico last year. He left us in July 2017 after a long illness. This year I tasted with his widow Giuliana and winemaker Oscar Arrivabene. I wanted to repost a memory from the last time I tasted directly with Domenico Clerico: When I tasted with Domenico Clerico just three years prior in this same room, I remember the pure sense of vitality and enthusiasm that radiated off this legendary vintner. His soulful energy permeated the entire room like warm rays of sunshine pouring through those transparent glass walls. Domenico was inexhaustible. He proudly introduced his line of new releases and then brought me down to the cellar to show me all his vinous treasures and keepsakes. Domenico was a lean and wiry man with a thick mane of gray hair, a broad smile and penetrating eyes that always looked straight ahead. He will be remembered for his game-changing contributions to the stylistic evolution of Barolo. Domenico Clerico is a modernist who succeeded in articulating a contemporary voice for the Nebbiolo grape. He farmed vineyards in Monforte d'Alba to produce the legendary wine Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra (now called Ciabot Mentin), Barolo Pajana and Barolo Per Cristina from the Mosconi cru. With a leased parcel in Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, Domenico Clerico made his Barolo Aeroplan Servaj. In local dialect, the term means “wild airplane” and is what the young, high-spirited Domenico was nicknamed by his father.

Tasting Note
A supple, luscious red, packed with cherry, black currant and violet flavors, showing light accents of tar, iron and wild herbs. This is backed by a dense structure, yet remains beautifully integrated, even at this youthful stage. Excellent length. Offers fine purity and harmony overall. Best from 2022 through 2046. 200 cases made, 100 cases imported. — BS

Domenico took over his father's vineyards in 1976 in Monforte d'Alba, on the south side of the Barolo area. Unlike his father, who was a grape grower, he made and bottled the wine himself from the start. Gradually he was able to increase the vineyard area from 5 to about 25 hectares with beautifully situated plots, including in the famous cru Ginestra. Although Domenico is considered one of the 'modernisti' because he works with rotofermenters and barriques, he has always put work in the vineyard first.
He is no longer a modernist in the basement either. Domenico thinks that he had to adapt to the changed climatic conditions during winemaking: working the same as around 2000 would, in his view, result in too high an alcohol content and an unwieldy wine. He is constantly looking for the right balance in his wines. For example, he now uses a little less barriques and more blunt and less new wood. Also, the maceration times in the rotofermenters have increased from 5 days to more than 20, with the rotary vanes barely operating. No insecticides, pesticides or fertilizers are used in the vineyards. He likes to release single vineyard wines, because in his view they best reflect the terroir. His wines are usually rich, aromatic and even relatively easy to approach when young. All in all a producer that is internationally acclaimed because he goes to great lengths to make quality wines that are in balance and because he constantly revises his methods in search of perfection. After Domenico's death, his wife Giuliana continued to manage the vineyards and the cellar.
Domenico Clerico's wines are modern and accessible at a young age compared to other Piedmont wines. They are highly appreciated internationally!
