Description
history of the Le Salette winery
The Le Salette winery has its origins in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. For generations, the Scamperle family has managed the vineyards and produced some of the region's most prized wines. The name Le Salette refers to a chapel built in the 19th century in gratitude for the protection of the vineyards. Today, the family combines tradition and modern insights to create wines of great depth and elegance. Their focus is entirely on red wines, including Valpolicella Classico, Ripasso, Recioto, and Amarone della Valpolicella.
the Valpolicella Classico region and its climate
The Valpolicella Classica is located in the hills north of Verona. This historic area is the birthplace of the famous Amarone della Valpolicella. The region benefits from a unique microclimate: warm summer days, cool nights, and optimal air circulation. This produces grapes with concentrated aromas and balanced acidity. The soils consist of limestone and volcanic rock, which contribute to the structure and minerality of the wines. The combination of terroir and climate forms the basis for the complexity and longevity of Amarone.
characteristics of le salette la marega amarone 2015
La Marega is one of Le Salette's most famous crus. Situated on an ideal slope in the Valpolicella Classica, the vineyard yields grapes of exceptional quality. The 2015 vintage is powerful, full-bodied, and elegant, and in this magnum format, it's particularly well-suited for long-term aging. The larger size not only lends a festive character but also allows for a slower and more even aging process, further enhancing the wine's refinement and extending its drinking window.
grapes, harvest and vinification
For the 2015 Amarone La Marega, only indigenous grape varieties are used. The blend consists primarily of Corvina and Corvinone, supplemented with Rondinella, Croatina, Dindarella, and a small portion of Sangiovese. The grapes are carefully harvested and selected by hand. They then undergo the traditional appassimento process, during which the grapes are left to dry for several months in well-ventilated rooms. This process concentrates the sugars and aromas and forms the basis for Amarone's powerful style. After fermentation, the wine is aged extensively in oak barrels of various sizes, followed by bottle aging. This creates complexity, balance, and excellent aging potential.
color, smell and taste
The 2015 Amarone La Marega displays a deep, dark ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose opens with aromas of ripe cherries, plums, and blackberries, complemented by notes of cocoa, tobacco, and light spices. On the palate, the wine is powerful and full-bodied, with a rich structure and soft, ripe tannins. The flavor is layered with nuances of dark fruit, spice, and a hint of chocolate. The finish is long, complex, and harmonious, typical of a high-quality Amarone.
storage potential and drinking window
The 2015 vintage has developed beautifully and is now at an ideal drinking moment. Thanks to its concentration and magnum aging, the wine will remain elegant and powerful for many years to come. The larger size not only adds refinement but also a longer drinking window, making the wine ideal for both immediate enjoyment and further cellar aging.
the appeal of amarone in magnum
A magnum bottle always has a special character. It makes a dinner or occasion more festive and also allows the wine to mature better. The 2015 Le Salette La Marega Amarone in magnum is therefore not only a visual statement at the table but also a wine that ages even more beautifully in the cellar. This makes it a valuable choice for the serious connoisseur and collector.

Here is another beautiful wine from Franco Scamperle and the talented team at Le Salette. The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega is 70% Corvina and Corvinone with 30% Dindarella, Rondinella and Oseleta that sees five months of appassimento. You'll find slightly less residual sugar (with slightly less alcohol at 15.5%), which gives this wine more austerity and aromas that veer toward dark fruit, pressed blackberry, savory spice, mesquite and barbecue smoke. Try to find a ring of Bossolà or another sweet bread to serve here sliced along with Taleggio or Piave cheeses. Some 20,000 bottles were made.
Le Salette makes some of my favorite wines in Valpolicella. Franco Scamperle and his team have purchased an additional two hectares of vines in the Fumane area, where higher altitudes allow for the diurnal shifts between day and nighttime temperatures that are so important to maintaining structure and vibrancy in the local wines.
