Description
Comtes Lafon is a highly regarded wine producer known for producing exceptional wines in Burgundy, France. Dominique Lafon, the owner and winemaker, is a respected figure in the world of wine. Comtes Lafon has a rich history that goes back several generations. The estate was founded in the early 19th century and Dominique Lafon has continued the family's winemaking tradition with great success. The winery is located in the village of Meursault, situated in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. Meursault is known for its high-quality Chardonnays with a rich, mineral character. The estate owns and produces from several vineyards in Meursault, as well as from other appellations in Burgundy, such as Volnay and Monthélie.
The Meursault 1er Cru Charmes comes into its own very well and reveals aromas of pear, fresh yellow stone fruits, fresh peach, almond paste and white flowers, followed by a medium to full body. The Premier Cru Charmes is known as one of the plots that produces more powerful and full Meursaults. High in balance and more expressions of wood in the wine. The aging potential of this plot is considerably higher than other plots in Meursault. The wine matures in 100% new French oak barrels. Completely in the style of Dominique Lafon, this is an elegant wine with a lot of finesse and depth.

From barrel, I preferred Lafon's 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes to his Perrières, and that preference manifested itself a year and a half later under blind conditions. Wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp peach, yellow orchard fruit, nutmeg and honey, it's a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine with terrific depth and concentration but rendered in a satiny, elegant style. Pure, precise and beautifully delineated, it was bottled under Diam 30.

From: 2016 & 2015 White Burgundy (Sep 2017)
(on its finings): Palish yellow. Aromas and flavors of ripe peach, lemon and smoky minerality, plus an element of vanillin oak. A wonderfully broad, sweet, seamless 2015 with surprising lift and no impression of undue weight. Not quite as smooth as the Genevrières but more explosive in the middle palate. Finishes wonderfully fresh and long, with piquant spicy lift. Should be outstanding.
- By Stephen Tanzer on June 2017
Dominique Lafon made just one-third of a normal white wine crop in 2016 and for that reason purchased no new oak barrels for these wines. He views 2016 as "charming and pleasant--a classic seductive vintage with a lightness, but not as serious as 2015." Although the pHs are a bit higher in 2016 than in the previous year, Lafon noted that it's too early to say whether the 2016s are more fragile wines. "They have less acidity but also less body; they have a different balance but an attractive balance. They remind me of the 2000s in their charm. They have nothing in excess." The '16s finished their malos early and had been sulfited by the time of my visit, and Lafon was considering racking some of them into tanks rather than back into barrels.
Lafon had only started bottling his 2015s the week before my visit, so I have provided a second set of notes on a number of these wines (the ‘15s had been moved into tanks in January, on their fine lees). Lafon told me that the ‘15s had become leaner in a positive way with aging, as fining has brought greater precision, and were now sharper in their fruit profile than they were a year ago. He thinks they will be strong agers—“but not the wines picked at 14.5%.” He noted that the 2003 vintage was very hot and early but that the wines are aging very well. To make his point, he opened a bottle of the ’03 Charmes, which was still a pale yellow-gold and had not changed much in color over the past ten years. It’s a hugely ripe, round, winter style of wine with a classic Meursault oatmeal element (Lafon suggested pairing it with chicken in a wine and cream sauce) and incredible depth of texture. Its slight warmth was buffered by its strong impression of sweetness and the wine was still remarkably fresh. I rated it 93 points.

From: The 2015 White Burgundies: A Year of Sunshine (Sep 2016)
From younger vines (one-third of the ultimate cuvée): Pale yellow. Ineffable high notes of spice oils and candied citrus fruits. Brisk and energetic, displaying juicy acidity for the year. From vines that are nearly 80 years of age (to comprise two-thirds of the blend): Pungent lemon candy on the nose. Suave, fine-grained and intense, with its superb density and thickness cut by lively acidity. Should make an outstanding premier cru. (Lafon's Gouttes d'Or, Poruzots and Perrières were in tanks in early June, still in the early stages of their malolactic fermentations.)
- By Stephen Tanzer on June 2016
Dominique Lafon considers 2015 to be a great vintage for Burgundy’s red wines “and nice and appealing for the whites. They will never have the refinement of the ‘14s but they’re not heavy.” The Chardonnay grapes were very ripe but none of his parcels was over 13.5%, as Lafon started harvesting on August 27. Acidity levels were healthy, he added. Some of the 2015s finished their malolactic fermentations earlier than usual and were sulfited last November, but Lafon had a few of his ‘15s in stainless steel tanks at the beginning of June to get the malos to finish.
Like many of his colleagues on the Côte de Beaune, Lafon has taken a variety of measures in recent years to prevent premature oxidation of his wines. He is seeking to bottle "more backward" wines by working more reductively, racking his wines into stainless steel tanks earlier, rather than simply transferring them to another set of barrels. He's also racking without exposure to air and keeping more CO2 in the wines. His overall objective is "to control the amount of dissolved oxygen in the wines at every step," he told me, adding that his wines now go into bottle with just one part per million. High levels of dissolved oxygen at the time of bottling can quickly absorb free sulfur and leave the wines vulnerable to oxidation. Incidentally, Lafon has been using all DIAM corks since 2013, having recently adopted the new, extra-thick and long DIAM 30s for his top bottlings.

History of Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon was originally founded by Jules Joseph Barthélémy Lafon, born in 1864. He married Marie Boch in January 1894, whose family were already wine merchants and estate owners in Meursault. He expanded the estate and purchased several important plots at the beginning of the 20th century, such as: Le Montrachet Grand Cru, the Meursault 1er Crus “Les Perrières”, “Les Charmes” and “Les Genevrières”, Volnay 1er Crus “Santenots” and “Clos des Chênes”. In 1961, the entire production of Domaine des Comtes Lafon was bottled on the estate and he permanently moved from Paris to Meursault. Dominique Lafon, René's son, took over the domain in 1984 and gradually ended the sharecropping agreements, so that from 1987 the entire 13.80 hectares are managed exclusively by the Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lafon is known for its high-quality Chardonnays with an oily and mineral character. The estate owns and produces from several vineyards in Meursault, as well as from other appellations in Burgundy, such as Volnay and Monthélie.
Production by Comtes Lafon
Dominique Lafon is an advocate of biodynamic farming practices, where sustainability and the health of the vineyard ecosystem are paramount. He uses organic and biodynamic methods in the vineyards to produce wines that reflect the terroir of the region. Comtes Lafon has achieved cult status among wine lovers and collectors. They are often highly sought after for their purity, balance and expression of the unique characteristics of the terroir. The winery produces a wide range of wines, including several Meursault Premier Cru and Village. Some of the most famous vineyards under the Comtes Lafon label are Meursault Perrières, Meursault Charmes and Volnay Santenots. These wines are celebrated for their elegance and complexity. Comtes Lafon wines are produced in relatively limited quantities, making them somewhat difficult to find.
