Description
This is one of the absolute top wines from Montalcino from the Casanova di Neri domain. This wine was the first Brunello where the highest quality was strived for and where the land was worked with great respect. The grapes were picked manually in September. The grapes were then fermented for a period of 23 days. The maturation of this wine took place for a period of 29 months in French oak barrels of 500 liters, after which further maturation in the bottle continued for at least another year. This producer belongs to the new generation of Brunello producers. The company started in 1971, when Giovanni Neri bought the largest domain in the Montalcino area. The domain covers a total of 39 hectares and is divided into 4 vineyards. The oldest vineyard is 50 years old. The vineyards are located at an altitude of approximately 350 meters above sea level. Casanova di Neri is one of the best producers of Brunello wines.
Weather-wise, the 2015 growing season saw a good amount of rain spread throughout the summer, with mild average temperatures. All things that helped deliver perfectly ripe grapes on the phenolic side with sugar and acidity in perfect balance like we haven't had in a long time. Clear aroma of violets, ripe black cherries, spices, balsamic notes, graphite and licorice. Large and sweet tannins, endless mouthfeel with a very long sweet aftertaste in the style of Cerretalto. All this is blended with great harmony. High aging potential. It should be served at 16-17 C°, opening the bottle at least 2-3 hours in advance.
The fermentation and maceration proceeded naturally, using only gravity to get the grapes into open cone-shaped fermenters, with a drop-down system for 32 days. The wine has been allowed to rest in wooden barrels for 30 months and bottle aging for 30 months. Suckling writes (100/100): "Drinkable now, but will go on for ever" This is a super scarce 1.5 liter magnum in a beautiful wooden box (OWC/1)

Of these new releases from this benchmark estate, the Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is my favorite wine. This Riserva is larger than life with ripe fruit, raspberry, cherry, spice, cola, root beer, mesquite and cedar. The wine offers a flashy and generous quality of fruit that unfolds over time with a multifaceted and multi-layered presentation. One thing that stands out here is the acidity that is bracing and tart at first but then succumbs to an important supporting role, rendering lasting freshness and persistence to the finish. With time, you get a flash of cherry and crème de cassis that seals the deal.

The density and energy to this Brunello lives up to its reputation, with superb depth and polish, showing terrific plum, blackberry and crushed-stone character. Slate and white pepper, too, as well as subtle rust and wrought iron. The finish goes on for minutes, yet it’s so deep and complete. A truly great wine. Drinkable now, but will go on for ever.
