Description
Château Pétrus is located on the famous Pomerol plateau on the right bank of Bordeaux. The soil consists mainly of clay with a unique content of iron-bearing substrata (crasse de fer), which provide a special terroir. The wine is made almost entirely from Merlot , the grape that thrives on this soil.
Climate and harvest 2014
The growing season started cool and wet, which led to slow development of the grapes. The summer was moderate, but in September the tide turned with a long, dry and sunny period. This “Indian Summer” ensured optimal phenolic ripening, allowing the grapes to reach their maximum aromatic potential without becoming overripe. The harvest at Pétrus was carried out with the utmost precision between late September and early October.
Vinification and maturation
After careful selection of the bunches, the wine was fermented in concrete vats, followed by maturation in 100% new French oak for about 20 months. The style of Pétrus in 2014 is less powerful than for example the 2010 or 2015, but excels in finesse and balance.
Tasting notes
The 2014 Pétrus opens with an expressive nose of ripe cherries, black plums, flowers, truffle and a hint of mocha. The palate is refined and harmonious, with a silky texture, juicy acidity and ripe, silky tannins. Less concentrated than in the greatest years, the wine convinces with its elegant balance and purity of fruit. The finish is long and layered, with subtle minerality and spiciness.
This Petrus also comes directly from the Chateau. We always buy all our wines from the importers or chateaux so that authenticity can be checked and that we know for sure that these wines are always stored in good conditions. The 2014 Petrus was tasted on the same morning as the 2014 Vieux-Château-Certan and though they are built from different blends, their personalities are quite similar. This is a succinct, not powerful, much more refined and discrete bouquet, gradually unfurling and revealing a subtle sea spray/marine element. The palate is again quite discrete at first and unfolds at a glacial pace. It is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, quite linear and structured, gently building towards a finish that has wonderful salinity (continuing that marine theme). Note: I actually returned to taste this several hours later, because it was so closed earlier on and it did finally open, which is atypical for this Pomerol. It is a wonderful Petrus, but one that will deserve bottle age and decanting.

A wine evincing true enlightenment. It’s floral on the nose and also shows blackberries, stones, minerals and cedar. Full-bodied, yet its so fine-grained and tight. So, so long. It builds like a waterfall on the finish. The tannins are powerful yet superbly integrated and harmonious. Needs four to five years in bottle. Drink in 2023.

From: 2014 Bordeaux: It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over (Apr 2015)
The 2014 Petrus possesses remarkable density and power, with superb overall depth and an explosive sense of energy that is impossible to miss. Scents of violet, spice and rose petal open up in the glass before the fruit totally takes over. Broad and resonant throughout, Pétrus is one of the bigger, richer wines readers will come across in 2014. The harvest at Petrus took place between September 23 and October 4. Winemaker Olivier Berrouet gave the 2014 15 days on the skins, opting for what he describes as very gentle extractions. New oak is 50%.

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus produces the most famous Merlot wine in the world! The vineyard covers just 11.5 hectares and is planted with 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc vines, with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of iron-rich clay.
Château Pétrus: the ultimate icon of Pomerol
Château Pétrus is without a doubt one of the most legendary wine estates in the world. Situated in the heart of the Bordeaux region, on the plateau of Pomerol, this modest estate has been producing exceptional red wines for decades. Although Pétrus does not carry an official classification (Pomerol has no Grand Cru system), the wine is globally regarded as one of the very best, often mentioned in the same breath as the Premier Crus of the Médoc.
The terroir of Château Pétrus
What makes Pétrus so special is its unique terroir. The 11.5-hectare vineyard lies on a rare subsoil of blue clay; a type of soil found almost nowhere else in Bordeaux. This clay retains water exceptionally well, which is crucial in dry years, and gives the wines their remarkable power and refinement. Its location on the highest point of Pomerol also ensures optimal sun exposure and drainage.
Pétrus produces Merlot in its purest form
Pétrus is almost entirely planted with Merlot. This grape thrives on the heavy clay soil and produces wines that are rich, velvety, and powerful. In some vintages, a small percentage of Cabernet Franc is added, but the focus is always on expressing Merlot at its finest. In the glass, this translates into intense aromas of black fruit, truffle, cocoa, and violets, with a sensual texture and an endless finish. The wine can age for decades, gaining in complexity and depth over time.
Meticulous vinification at Château Pétrus
At Château Pétrus, every detail matters. From rigorous selection in the vineyard to slow fermentation and aging in carefully chosen French oak barrels - every step of the winemaking process is aimed at crafting a wine that is both grand and elegant. Only a few thousand cases are produced each year, which adds to its exclusivity.
A wine for collectors and true enthusiasts
Pétrus is more than just a wine. It is a collector’s item, a symbol of prestige, and above all a singular taste experience. Those lucky enough to own a bottle will discover the essence of top Bordeaux, made with dedication, tradition, and a pursuit of perfection. It is a wine that reveals its full potential only in the best vintages, making each release eagerly anticipated.
