Description
The 2021 Petrus retained its opaque purple-black color after bottling, heralding the seemingly frozen, glacial pace at which this wine continues. Wonderful length and depth for this vintage, with blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry character. Also notes of clove and sandalwood. Full-bodied and layered. Ripe and abundant, yet balanced and fresh. Crisp and very bright. This wine, released from the barrel two months earlier than usual, will offer an unusually wide drinking window. In style, it is reminiscent of the 2011 vintage.
This Petrus also comes directly from the chateau. We always purchase all our wines from importers or chateaux so that authenticity can be verified and we can be sure these wines are always stored in good condition. We only deliver this wine within the Netherlands. International customers can choose to collect it (collect it yourself or with a courier of your choice).
FACT: The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and if you pick it up, you'll often receive a nice discount . You'll see your discount immediately when you select "Pick up" at checkout. We're located in Dordrecht, just off the A16 motorway, with ample parking. Click here for our address.

From barrel, the 2021 Pétrus was decidedly muscular and introverted, but élevage has certainly tamed it, delivering a result that's much more sensual and charming than I could have imagined. Offering up aromas of ripe cherries, mulberries, rose petals, licorice and violets, it's full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a suave, seamless, lively profile and a bright, perfumed finish. This wine, which was racked out of barrel two months earlier than usual, will offer an unusually broad drinking window. In style, it reminds me somewhat of the estate's 2011.

From: Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)
The 2021 Petrus was picked from September 30 until October 9 and aged in the usual 50% new oak. It has a completely different aromatic profile compared to the previous vintages, a return to the Petrus that I know at this stage. It made me think of the 2008, possibly the 2014: cool and linear, refined, very complex, offering lightly spiced red fruit with a small pinch of Chinese five-spice. The fresh, focused palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, good depth and fine tannins, and as usual, it opens exquisitely with aeration, becoming linear and very saline. Long and sustained toward the finish. This Petrus represents one of the few 2021s that will rank alongside the 2019 or 2020.
- By Neal Martin on April 2022
“The season started early at the end of March, like 2020,” Olivier Berrouet told me as we tasted in their cuverie. “We had some frost at the beginning of April, but we were not affected. The problem was during flowering at the start of June. [Berrouet nips out and prints of a graph that uncovers one of the major obstacles of the 2021 season that few winemakers spoke about]. You can see that on the exact day of mi-fleuraison [halfway through the critical flowering stage] we had 16.8mm of rain and 11.6mm the following day. Consequently, the Merlot suffered a lot of coulure. We lost 25%, though we managed to control it. The lack of sunshine was a big problem, less than 250 hours compared to the previous year. It was the key point. Bud break was at the same as last year, but whereas we picked 30 September in 2021, we picked on 9 September in 2020. So, given that average temperatures and rainfall are not dissimilar, how do you explain this three-week gap and the 13.3% alcohol compared to 14.5% in 2020? It means there was a very slow growth cycle, and so when we started to taste the grapes in early September, they were unripe but not green. Pyrazines had been burned off during the summer as the temperature was not bad. The luck we had in 2021 is that we were not pressured by the excess quantity of sugar that forced picking dates. We harvested 70% of the blend before the rain and 30% after, mostly right at the end [to maximise maturity]. With our blue clay soils, if we don’t harvest ripe, then we miss something. In 2021, we embraced the typicité of the vintage, the wine is more delicate and elegant, and we went in that direction, seeking balance in the wine. It’s not a tannic vintage. I was talking with my father [Jean-Claude Berrouet], and we both found it difficult to find a comparable vintage.” I asked whether there were any alterations with respect to the vinification. “We blended to build the mid-palate,” he answers, “looking for consistency and a structure to lengthen the wine. The malolactic was very quick, so the wine shut down drastically in December. We did a very small 0.3% chaptalisation to reach around 13% alcohol, and there was no saignée as the berries were quite small.”

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus produces the most famous Merlot wine in the world! The vineyard covers just 11.5 hectares and is planted with 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc vines, with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of iron-rich clay.
Château Pétrus: the ultimate icon of Pomerol
Château Pétrus is without a doubt one of the most legendary wine estates in the world. Situated in the heart of the Bordeaux region, on the plateau of Pomerol, this modest estate has been producing exceptional red wines for decades. Although Pétrus does not carry an official classification (Pomerol has no Grand Cru system), the wine is globally regarded as one of the very best, often mentioned in the same breath as the Premier Crus of the Médoc.
The terroir of Château Pétrus
What makes Pétrus so special is its unique terroir. The 11.5-hectare vineyard lies on a rare subsoil of blue clay; a type of soil found almost nowhere else in Bordeaux. This clay retains water exceptionally well, which is crucial in dry years, and gives the wines their remarkable power and refinement. Its location on the highest point of Pomerol also ensures optimal sun exposure and drainage.
Pétrus produces Merlot in its purest form
Pétrus is almost entirely planted with Merlot. This grape thrives on the heavy clay soil and produces wines that are rich, velvety, and powerful. In some vintages, a small percentage of Cabernet Franc is added, but the focus is always on expressing Merlot at its finest. In the glass, this translates into intense aromas of black fruit, truffle, cocoa, and violets, with a sensual texture and an endless finish. The wine can age for decades, gaining in complexity and depth over time.
Meticulous vinification at Château Pétrus
At Château Pétrus, every detail matters. From rigorous selection in the vineyard to slow fermentation and aging in carefully chosen French oak barrels - every step of the winemaking process is aimed at crafting a wine that is both grand and elegant. Only a few thousand cases are produced each year, which adds to its exclusivity.
A wine for collectors and true enthusiasts
Pétrus is more than just a wine. It is a collector’s item, a symbol of prestige, and above all a singular taste experience. Those lucky enough to own a bottle will discover the essence of top Bordeaux, made with dedication, tradition, and a pursuit of perfection. It is a wine that reveals its full potential only in the best vintages, making each release eagerly anticipated.
