Description
MARCH 2024 - Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On BY NEAL MARTIN | MARCH 19, 2024 - All the great houses in Bordeaux from the vintage have now been tasted again 10 years later by Neil Martin of Vinous (and former Parker reviewer). In this article, Chateau Leoville Poyferré ranked 4th, just behind Cht Mouton Rothschild with 97 points, Cht Suduiraut with 96 points, Cht Montrose with 96 points and just ahead of Cht d'Yquem with 95 points. It surpasses almost all the big names from Bordeaux and, very importantly, remains much more affordable! We were able to purchase a small number of chests directly from the Château in response to this fantastic appreciation. This top Bordeaux is still very affordable compared to the entire top 20 from this Ten Years On Tasting and a Grand Cru Classé that does not have to be stored for another 20 years is almost impossible to obtain (affordable) (but can also be stored for another 25 years). the basement).
Neil Martin/Vinous - 96/100 - The 2014 Léoville Poyferré has a magnificent nose that is a cut above its peers: more concentrated, more delineated and has stunning depth with complexity that only comes through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, but this Saint-Julien has real backbone and density, with impressive substance towards the finish. One of the best wines on the Left Bank. This is the finest bottle I have tasted, and it is far from representing the best Left Bank in this vintage.
The Léoville Poyferré has a deep garnet purple color and blows from the glass with seductive notes of chocolate-covered cherries, blueberry pie, dried mulberries and blackcurrant syrup plus suggestions of camphor, espresso, spice cake and tea. It is medium to full bodied on the palate with good freshness with blackberry preserves and exotic herbal layers. An already incredibly impressive wine that will enhance the beautiful fruit even more after the end of the barrel maturation when the tannins have been absorbed.
In the heart of the Médoc, Château Léoville Poyferré has always been one of the most prestigious wineries. There was once a single domain called Léoville that was famous throughout the region. Over the course of history, it has come into the possession of various families through heirs and major events. In 1865 the domain came into the hands of the bankers Baron d'Erlanger and Armand Lalande. They were faced with setbacks in the form of phylloxera and mildew epidemics. Today the castle belongs to the Cuvelier family. They have invested enormously since the 1980s with extraordinary results. Today the château is one of the top in Saint-Julien.
FACT: In the Tab: Appendix you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful wine. We will send it to you automatically when you order this wine. It is worth mentioning that we purchase the wines directly and never purchase them through intermediaries because we do not know which journeys the wine has made and how it has been treated. The wines come from the cellars of the Chateau directly to our conditioned Warehouse in Dordrecht where all our wines are stored. If you come and pick it up, you will often receive a nice discount.

The 2014 Leoville-Poyferre was surprisingly backward and tight on the nose (usually it is the most expressive and generous Léoville in its youth). The precision and focus is intact, but it is broody and sultry at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm structure, which suggests that it has turned volte face since its opulent showing in barrel. Overall, this comes across as perhaps a slightly more austere and masculine wine from Didier Cuvelier, though that is not a criticism, just an observation. I would like to see a little more persistence on the finish, but the tidings bode well for this mercurial and fascinating Léoville-Poyferre. I can see it improving with bottle age, hence the plus sign against my score.

A ripe, generous and substantial wine for this appellation with some real concentration. Plenty of beautiful currant and blackberry character, as well as a solid core of ripe, dusty and velvety tannins and enough acidity to carry the long, savory finish. A beauty. Better in 2024.

From: Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)
The 2014 Léoville Poyferré has a very complex bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, cedar and hints of violet. It is extremely focused, intense rather than overtly powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and generous, conveying much more tension and precision than the Léoville Las-Cases. It gradually fans out in the second half with real mineralité, quite profound in the context of the vintage. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
