Description
The Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne is a blend of grapes from four carefully selected vineyards. Each with their unique characteristics that contribute to the complexity of the wine. The soils are diverse, with calcareous clay, marl and sand. The average age of the vines varies from 15 to 45 years. This contributes to the depth and ripeness of the wine.
The 2012 Barolo Le Vigne is still a very young wine. Bright acidity lifts a core of red fruit in a Barolo that impresses with its liveliness. Herbs, blood orange, mint, rose petals and lavender open up with time in the glass. The 2012 showed considerable potential as a young wine, now that potential is really starting to come through.

The Luciano Sandrone 2012 Barolo le Vigne shows the trademark ripeness that I so often identify in this historic product. The bouquet is round and plush with thick layers of dark cherry marmalade, blackberry preserves and dark currant. Beyond those apparent fruit aromas, Le Vigne offers dark spice and licorice with a beautiful menthol signature on the finish. The wine's natural structure is padded by soft tannins and lush fruit consistency. In all, this important wine is less vibrant and distinctive compared to other excellent vintages such as 2008 and 2010.
The 2012 Luciano Sandrone wines are very good, but remain far from the amazing heights achieved by this historic winery in the best years. Like many of the wines from this vintage (across the various townships that make up the appellation), they are slightly less expressive and they speak at a lower volume.

Purity of fruit and balance here is very impressive. Firm and very silky tannins with a long, long finish that gives the wine amazing depth and intensity. Love the spicy and dense fruit character at the end of the palate. Drink in 2020.

From: The Enigma of 2018 Barolo (Feb 2022)
The 2012 Barolo Le Vigne, here in a library release, is still a very young wine. Bright acids lift a core of red fruit in a Barolo that impresses with its vibrancy. Spice, blood orange, mint, rose petal and lavender open with a bit of time in the glass. The 2012 showed quite a bit of potential as a young wine, now, that potential is really starting to come through. This is a terrific showing.- By Antonio Galloni on November 2021
"It was a crazy year," Luca Sandrone told me. We had rain virtually all of May and then again in June. Summer was hot, which was favorable. The vintage really tested us. Yields were naturally high, which required quite a bit of thinning. In my view, the key to 2018 was waiting to harvest." Indeed, harvest started on October 6 and finished on the 21st, which is on the later side by today's standards. In tasting, the 2018 Barolos have the nervous tension and mid-weight structure that is a signature of the better wines. Over the last handful of years, Sandrone has gradually moved towards a style that emphasizes more freshness. It is pretty much impossible to tell how much of that is in play in a clearly freakish vintage like 2018, but in general, the Sandrone Barolos today are more nuanced and vibrant than they were a decade ago. Readers will also want to check out the library releases of the 2012s, both of which are terrific.

The Sandrone winery was founded in 1978, born out of a desire to make the best possible Nebbiolo we from the unique terroirs of the Langhe. This passion plays an important role in every step of the wine making process. Currently, Lucian Sandrone belongs to the absolute top of the Barolo wines. The wines are expensive, but compared to the French bordeaux, Luciano's wines are still (relatively inexpensive).
In late 1977, Luciano was able to purchase an initial section of the Cannubi vineyard. The following year (1978) he began to test and refine small quantities of his own wine in the garage of his childhood home according to the traditions of Barolo. By adding new technologies, he was able to make the Barolo less grim and hard.
In 1982 he met his first international distributor at Vinitaly who bought almost 1,500 bottles of his first 1978 Barolo. For example, the exporter of his wines started to the United States and Switzerland. Sandrone currently has 27 hectares of vineyard, 75% of which are owned. The wines are made exclusively from grapes from our own production. Sandrone stands for passion, transparency and integrity. Investments are mainly made in the quality of the wine and no money is spent on a beautiful advertising campaign or flashy marketing.
