The Sandrone Aleste was first called the former Sandrone Cannubi Boschis. The Luciano Sandrone 2020 Barolo Aleste is a powerful and refined wine with a layered complexity. On the nose it offers an intriguing mix of sweet earthy notes and 'drunken cherry', or juicy, ripe cherries infused with a subtle hint of liqueur. The wine shows a beautiful transition from ripe fruit to perfectly integrated wood notes, followed by spicy accents of licorice and spices. The Aleste is a tribute to Sandrone's family and is made exclusively from grapes grown in the prestigious Cannubi Boschis vineyard in the village of Barolo. The name Aleste is a combination of the names Alessia and Stefano, the grandchildren of Luciano Sandrone, and reflects the deep family traditions behind this wine.

The Luciano Sandrone 2020 Barolo Le Vigne is open-knit in texture with sun-drenched aromas. You get ripe fruit with black cherry, blackcurrant, forest floor and wild mushroom. With time in the glass, the wine reveals floral definition, grilled tarragon herb and a heavier note of wheat biscuit. Starting with the 2019 vintage, Le Vigne also includes Le Coste di Monforte fruit along with fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. Production is 20,000 bottles.
The Sandrone family acquired a two-hectare Nebbiolo vineyard in Le Coste di Monforte (in Monforte d'Alba) in March 2021. Starting with the 2019 vintage, that fruit is part of the Barolo Le Vigne blend.

The blackberry, spice and tar aromas are enticing and follow through to a full yet tight body that shows density and depth. The tannins are extremely well integrated and feel melted into the wine. Slightly bitter orange and mineral character at the end. Complex and curated. Drink after 2027.

The 2020 Barolo Le Vigne is graced with brilliant aromatic intensity and plenty of depth. Crushed rose petal, mint, blood orange, spice, lavender and pomegranate all meld together. Le Vigne has a bit more aromatic vibrancy and verve than the Aleste, but shares a general feeling of openness with its sibling.

It’s very difficult to visit the Sandrone winery now that Luciano Sandrone has passed away. I have so many memories of visiting here, the common theme being how much time I was able to spend with the Sandrone family when I was just a consumer interested in learning about wine and not a professional. The estate is in good hands with Luciano’s younger brother Luca and the extended family running the show.
The 2020 Barolos are quite attractive, although they naturally show the lighter style of the year. Harvest ran from October 8 to 13. The 2020s saw 15-20 days on the skins. Malolactic fermentations were done in wood. As has been the case for some time, aging in oak is 18 months, so on the shorter side for Barolo. I also tasted the 2018 Vite Talin, which is a terrific wine, especially for the year. It is the one Barolo here that is vinified in wood uprights and aged for three years, two in 500L tonneaux, and a third year in cask.

The Sandrone winery was founded in 1978, born out of a desire to make the best possible Nebbiolo we from the unique terroirs of the Langhe. This passion plays an important role in every step of the wine making process. Currently, Lucian Sandrone belongs to the absolute top of the Barolo wines. The wines are expensive, but compared to the French bordeaux, Luciano's wines are still (relatively inexpensive).
In late 1977, Luciano was able to purchase an initial section of the Cannubi vineyard. The following year (1978) he began to test and refine small quantities of his own wine in the garage of his childhood home according to the traditions of Barolo. By adding new technologies, he was able to make the Barolo less grim and hard.
In 1982 he met his first international distributor at Vinitaly who bought almost 1,500 bottles of his first 1978 Barolo. For example, the exporter of his wines started to the United States and Switzerland. Sandrone currently has 27 hectares of vineyard, 75% of which are owned. The wines are made exclusively from grapes from our own production. Sandrone stands for passion, transparency and integrity. Investments are mainly made in the quality of the wine and no money is spent on a beautiful advertising campaign or flashy marketing.
