Description
Sublime 2011 diagonal from Douro, Portugal.
History of Casa Ferreirinha
Casa Ferreirinha, located in the Douro region of Portugal, has a rich tradition dating back to the 18th century. Its name honors Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, nicknamed "Ferreirinha." In 1952, Fernando Nicolau de Almeida laid the foundation for what would become the iconic Barca Velha. He combined traditional Douro grapes with modern winemaking methods inspired by studies in Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Rioja. Since then, leadership has remained within a small circle of technical directors—from Almeida through José Maria Soares Franco to the current oenologist, LuÃs Sottomayor. Casa Ferreirinha is part of the leading Portuguese winemaking group Sogrape.
Region, terroir and climate in the Douro
Located in the Douro Superieur, the vineyards are characterized by steep slopes, slate soils, and a complex microclimate. The 2011 harvest experienced a cold, wet winter, followed by a dry spring and a balanced summer. Light rain fell in August and September, ensuring harmonious ripening of the grapes.
Grape varieties in the 2011 Barca Velha
The blend consists of:
- 45% Touriga Franca
- 35% Touriga Nacional
- 10% Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)
- 10% Tinto Cão
The grapes come from carefully selected plots at Quinta da Leda and Quinta do Sairrão, located in the Cima Corgo at an altitude of approximately 600 metres.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand and completely destemmed. This is followed by gentle crushing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks with prolonged skin maceration. The wine then matures for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, some of which are new, which adds structure and complexity.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2011 vintage
Colour: Deep ruby red with a bright lustre and minimal deposits, typical of the magnum format.
Nose: Intense and layered with notes of blackcurrant, blue plum, red cherry, cedar, tobacco, clove, graphite and subtle vanilla tones from the oak.
Palate: Rich and layered, with velvety tannins, refined acidity, and a long, elegant finish. Flavors of ripe fruit, spice, cocoa, leather, and a hint of minerality blend beautifully. Criticism: 97 points (Parker), 96+ (Suckling), 98 (Decanter).
Why you want to order this wine
The 2011 Casa Ferreirinha Barca Velha Magnum is a paragon of class from the Douro. Thanks to careful grape selection, long oak aging, and an excellent balance of power and elegance, this is a wine for special occasions. Ideal as a gift, for cellaring, or for a grand dinner. Its international acclaim underscores the rarity and quality of this vintage.

Professional Reviews
Parker
The 2011 Barca Velha, the latest offering of this late-released wine, is a blend of 45% Touriga Franca, 35% Touriga Nacional, 10% Tinta Roriz and 10% Tinto Cão. This was aged in French oak for about 18 months. It comes in at 14.7% alcohol. The price of this tends to be set by the market (although it was around 250 euros with the producer's wine club), list prices having no resemblance to what might happen. I have heard of some retailers hitting 800 euros a bottle, which is frankly ridiculous.

Extremely deep red with aromas and flavors that change all the time with blackberry, black raspberry, black licorice, floral and asphalt. Full-bodied with deep intensity, power and finesse. The tannins are wonderfully polished yet so much there. This is a tribute to the first great Barca Velhas of the 1960s. Drinkable, but better in three or four years.

Established in 1952, Barca Velha was the first top quality still wine from the Douro and set the standard for Casa Ferreirinha. Over the decades, the range has expanded to include wines with different profiles, such as Reserva Especial, Vinha Grande and Papa Figos. Heir to more than 270 years of history, the name Casa Ferreirinha is inspired by the great figure of the 19th century, Dona Antónia Ferreira – affectionately known as "Ferreirinha".
The stunning wild beauty of Quinta da Leda is home to 160 ha of vineyards with countless different terroirs of red varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, all grown in integrated production mode. A jewel of viticulture and enology, it is the birthplace of both the iconic Barca Velha and Quinta da Leda, a deep, intense red that brings out the best of this terroir in excellent years. Casa Ferreirinha wines begin life in the vineyards carved into the hills and valleys of the Douro. These vineyards on stony slate soils, at different altitudes and exposures, with dozens of different red and white varieties, can withstand harsh winters and hot summers. Knowledge and expertise capture the best of each location and variety to create quality wines that are consistent, vibrant and fresh, or intense and complex, for different occasions.
What is unusual is that Casa Ferreirinha has only had three technical directors in 70 years - and they all worked together on one stage! LuÃs Sottomayor started at Casa Ferreirinha at a young age. He is the third and current chief oenologist. He worked for years with the second, José Maria Soares Franco, who was trained by the very first, the creator of Barca Velha, Fernando Nicolau de Almeida.
