2010 Rubinelli Vajol Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva DOCG
The 2010 Amarone is an Amarone Riserva. The wine comes from the famous year well known to amarone lovers. They have kept a barrel of this vintage in the cellars of Rubinelli and it was bottled in early 2022 to show the potential of a well-made Amarone. Freshness and strength go hand in hand and that is rarely the case with the mass of amarones. This is a meditation wine that should be enjoyed in peace. Unprecedentedly refined and the time in the barrel (9 years) makes this incomparably beautiful.
Rubinello Vajol's Amarone comes from the typical grape varieties for amarone, namely: 40% Corvina, 40% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella, 5% Molinara and 5% Oseleta. The Grand Cru vineyards of Rubinelli are located in the Vajol area and are one of the most beautiful areas in the Veneto. In the Vajol the winery has a unique position because all vineyards are located around the winery (in contrast to many others (read most) that have plots throughout the area and the commercial Amarone wineries often do not have their own vineyards and buy the majority .
All grapes come exclusively from the fields around Corte Sant'Anna, this gives a special uniqueness to the wine and makes it unmistakable: wine born on tuff. This area was once the sea - imagine a sunny bay. The soil consists of marl formed between the Mesozoic era (150 million years ago) and the Tertiary era (60 million years ago) followed by the origin of the Alpine mountains. The soil is very calcareous, ideal for moderating the natural vigor of the vines. Limestone also has sponge-like properties: the ability to hold water for long periods of time, allowing it to pass through only when the plants need it. This always keeps the grapes well hydrated. The soil is thin but rich in organic matter which allows the vines to live in perfect nutritional balance. This harmony is reflected in the quality of the wines, which are always elegant and fully express, both in their aroma and on the palate, their rich polyphenolic multitude. Rubinelli Vajol wines are born in the ground before they reach the wine cellar; they are gifts of nature and of the formation of land structures in the Conca del Vajol.
The selected grapes are matured/dried in baskets for four months, after which they are fermented at a controlled temperature between January and February. At Rubinello the wine is then aged in large oak barrels for a period of at least 36 months and then the wine is bottle matured for another 2 years before this top amarone is released onto the market. At Rubinello they make authentic amarones with a beautiful freshness in which fruit predominates and not sugars. This Riserva has been allowed to age or ripen for a total of 9 years. It is a well-structured wine supported by good acidity. In the glass in a beautiful sparkling ruby red color. Beautiful notes on the nose with candied fruit, dried plum and dried apricot. It also has a hint of spices, leather, black pepper and cedar. The wine is spicy and has beautiful layers. In the mouth the wine is velvety soft, balanced and elegant. This is incomparable to commercial amarones that often have (too) much residual sugar and lack sufficient acidity.
This is an enjoyable wine and almost meditative. Without a doubt, it is excellent with stews such as an Italian brasato (roasted meat, stewed in red wine) but in general it goes well with dishes with a high aromatic value. We advise you to open the bottle some time (2 hours) before serving or to decant it.
