Description
The history of Masseto and the Bolgheri wine region
Masseto is an exclusive wine project that emerged from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, founded in 1981 in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast. The founder, Marchese Lodovico Antinori, wanted to make a wine that combined the power of Bordeaux with Italian finesse. Masseto quickly became a wine with an international reputation. Since 2005, the estate has been in the hands of the Frescobaldi family. The terroir of Bolgheri, with its mild maritime climate, gravel and clay soils, is an ideal base for the cultivation of Merlot, the grape variety of Masseto.
Types of wines from Masseto and Ornellaia
Masseto is a single-varietal Merlot and is positioned separately next to the other wines of Ornellaia. Tenuta dell'Ornellaia also produces Ornellaia (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot), Le Serre Nuove and Le Volte. Masseto is however the flagship and is only produced in top years, in limited editions and with its own vinification cellar since 2019.
2001 Masseto: grape varieties, harvest and vinification
The 2001 Masseto is made from 100% Merlot from the vineyard on the Masseto hill. The 2001 year had a warm, dry summer with ideal conditions for a concentrated and healthy harvest. The grapes were harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and a maturation of 24 months in new French oak barriques. The wine was then aged in bottle for at least 12 months before being released.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2001 Ornellaia Masseto
The 2001 Masseto shows a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections. In the nose complex aromas of ripe plums, blackcurrants, cocoa, graphite, leather and a subtle spiciness. In the mouth powerful yet refined with velvety tannins, concentrated layers of fruit and an elegant acidity. The wine ends in a long, harmonious aftertaste with notes of dark chocolate and tobacco. This wine has an impressive aging potential and can be drunk now or left to mature.

The 2008 Masseto is another huge wine. It boasts tons of energy in a tense, inward style I can only describe as implosive, as if the wine is holding back all of its energy. A deep core of black fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and new leather emerges from time to time, but the tannins are still imposing. There is no shortage of pedigree. I fully expect the 2008 to develop into one of the great Massetos. Needless to say, it will be interesting to taste the 2008 in vertical tastings in the future. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.
The 2009 vintage was not easy at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia because of the scorching hot summer. Readers may want to take a look at my video interview with Axel Heinz for more on the 2009 vintage.

Opulent and complex, with dark fruits such as plums and blackberries. Milk chocolate. Dried herbs too. Black olives. Stunning nose. Full bodied, with firm and chewy tannins, but a very creamy texture, and lots of milk chocolate, berry and mineral character. It goes on for minutes. Clear and powerful. Savory and salty. One of the best Massetos ever.

From: Masseto Retrospective at the Country Music Hall of Fame (Jan 2020)
The 2008 Masseto has never been an easy wine. When it was first released, it was so hard and unyielding. Time has helped the 2008 soften a bit. Even so, it remains a wine of contrasts, of a very obvious push and pull that seems to mirror a growing season marked by alternating periods of warm weather and far cooler conditions. Graphite, smoke, tar and licorice, along with broad tannins, give the 2008 a real feeling of masculine power, qualities that are accentuated in the magnum format.
- By Antonio Galloni on January 2018
This wine was tasted as part of a complete retrospective I co-hosted with Masseto winemaker Axel Heinz, singer/songwriter Martina McBride and her husband, producer John McBride that was auctioned off at the Nashville Wine Auction to fund cancer research and treatment.
First made in 1986 as Il Merlot dell’Ornellaia, Masseto has gone on to become one of the most highly sought-after wines in the world. Masseto emerges principally from three Merlot vineyards: ‘Masseto Alto, Masseto Centrale and Masseto Junior.’ The wine sees 3-4 weeks on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel. The lots are aged separately for 12 months in 100% new oak, blended and then the wine is aged for another 12 months in wood. Earlier vintages saw shorter macerations and less time in oak, broadly speaking. Production is around 32,000 bottles. Readers who want to learn more about the history of Masseto might enjoy this article from some years back.

The evening started with the 2008 Masseto, a wine that only continues to improve in bottle. The 2008 has always had structure to burn, but over the last year the fruit has begun to emerge, making for a vibrant, powerful Masseto built for the cellar.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
