How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inChâteau Rauzan-Ségla has a long and storied history dating back to the 17th century. The estate was originally part of the larger Rauzan estate, which was split into four separate properties in 1762. The portion that would become Rauzan-Ségla was acquired by Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségla, and the estate has borne his name ever since. Over the years, the property has changed hands several times and has experienced periods of prosperity and decline. In the late 19th century, the estate was owned by the Frey family. However, like many properties in Bordeaux, it faced challenges during the phylloxera and economic downturn. In 1994, Château Rauzan-Ségla was purchased by the Wertheimer family, who also own the famous luxury goods company Chanel. The Wertheimers have invested in the estate and worked to restore its reputation for producing high-quality wines.
The Rauzan-Ségla 2018 is composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for approximately 18 months in barriques, of which 65% are new. A deep garnet purple in colour, it opens from the glass with aromas of crushed black cherries, blackcurrants, star anise, chocolate and mint. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with tight, muscular layers of black fruit, supported by firm, ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with fantastic length and plenty of earthy sparks.

The 2018 Rauzan-Ségla is blended of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from September 27 to October 11; Merlot from September 13-27; Cabernet Franc on September 28; and Petit Verdot from September 28-29. The wine has 14% alcohol and aging is anticipated to be 18 months in barriques, 65% new. Deep purple-black in color, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of warm plums, crème de cassis, Black Forest cake and candied violets with hints of mocha, Indian spices and fragrant earth plus a waft of crushed rocks. Full-bodied, multilayered and sporting a lot of freshness and tension in the mouth in spite of all its decadent perfumed black fruits, it has a firm, finely grained frame and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Seduction in a glass.
“It was a tough year—a killer year,” began Technical Director Nicolas Audebert. “In fact, it was a disaster in June and July. We had a very hard time in the vineyard to try to balance things. The vineyard workers worked so hard during this time, to be sure to have volume without too much volume. The weather turned at the end of June, making the ripeness go very far and fast. The risk was to have too much concentration, density, etc.” When I questioned him about the yields at Rauzan-Ségla in 2018, Audebert replied, “Our yields were a bit lower than average, but we are extremely pleased with the balance we have at those yields. We came in at around 32 hectoliters per hectare.” There’s notably more Merlot in the Rauzan-Ségla blend this year—40% in 2018 as opposed to 36% in 2017, 30% in 2016 and 33% in 2015. “This year the Merlot has that density and juiciness we are looking for,” Audebert told me. “My top tanks are Merlot this year. People are saying forget Merlot because of climate change, but this year proves how great it can be. It should stay!” Rauzan-Ségla’s finished blend has been done for four months. My tasting sample was from one-year-old barriques.

This is showing really well right now with an exuberance and richness that verges on extravagance. It's full body, firmly textured with a ripe and rich fruit too. So much berry, spice, chocolate and incense character. Love to drink it now but a long life ahead of it.

Château Rauzan-Ségla Margaux 2018
Concentrated, with a deep well of cassis and dark cherry preserve, but it maintains the grace and perfume typical of Margaux, flowing with silky charm as lilac, red tea, mineral and sanguine details fill in gently behind the fruit. Long and very suave finish sparkles with a savory note. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040.

From: 2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)
The 2005 Rauzan-Ségla is captivating right from the very first taste. Soaring aromatics and bright veins of minerality confer energy to this statuesque Margaux. The 2005 is still a very young wine. In fact, I would cellar it for a few years. I am blown away by its energy, vibrant and sheer character. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, rose petal, blood orange and crushed rocks literally soar out of the glass. The 2005 captures the richness of the year, but it remains a classically built, mid-weight wine of remarkable freshness and tension. Rauzan-Ségla might very well be the most under the radar Left Bank wine in 2005. Magnificent.
