Description
Biondi Santi is one of the most talked about producers of Brunello wine. Biondi Santi has been one of Tuscany's leading wine producers for more than 150 years and is considered the "Founder of Brunello di Montalcino". Due to the microclimate and geological development of this area over the years, the hills around Montalcino are one of the oldest and most perfect areas of Italy to make beautiful quality wines. In the 16th century, Montalcino was already famous for their beautiful wines. However, Montalcino only gained real fame after the Brunello was created. This happened for the first time in 1888. The first Brunello wines were made by Ferruccio Biondi Santi. He further developed the work of his grandfather Clemente Santi, one of the leading winemakers at the time. He developed a clone of the Sangiovese grape, called Sangiovese Grosso. This new grape was developed in the vineyard called "Greppo". In the cellars of Biondi Santi you can still find Brunello wines from 1888. In September 1994, a large group of wine journalists were invited to taste the "old but so beautifully matured" wines from the cellars of the domain. Even the Brunello from 1891 (103 years old) was rated with 100 points, the highest rating.
A moderate spring with frequent rainfall led to an early summer, which remained dry and very hot from June to September. The harvest started about 10 days earlier than normal, due to the early ripening of the grapes. The 1983 Riserva was produced with our own clone of Sangiovese Grosso called BBS11 (Brunello Biondi Santi 11), which was identified and selected by Biondi-Santi at Tenuta Greppo in the 1970s. For this Riserva we have only used grapes from the oldest vines with an age of more than 25 years.
The 1983 Riserva matured for 3 years in Slavonian oak barrels. It benefited from a long refinement in the bottle in the quiet and darkness of “La Storica”, the bottle library of Tenuta Greppo where all the historical vintages of Biondi-Santi Riserva are meticulously preserved.
The 1983 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a brilliant but bare wine that reminds us of the original idea for Brunello, a wine made with a specific clone of Sangiovese selected for its long aging potential. Despite all that time in the bottle, this wine presents stunning purity and clarity of fruit. On the palate it is polished and shiny with tannins softened by time. A bright moment of acidic freshness reminds us that this wine is still very much alive. This vintage was refilled and the cork was replaced for the first time in 2000, and again in 2022. This "Late Release" Brunello Di Montalcino is a beautiful example of wisdom and freshness.

This is a cerebral and emotionally stirring wine that brings us back to a very different, more innocent time in the quickly evolving timeline of this mighty wine appellation in southern Tuscany. The 1983 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a brilliant but naked wine that reminds us of the original blueprint for Brunello, a wine made with a specific clone of Sangiovese that was selected for its long aging potential. Despite all that time in bottle, this wine presents stunning purity and clarity of fruit. It is polished and glossy in the mouth with tannins that have been softened by time. A bright moment of acidic freshness reminds us that this wine is still very much alive.
The big news at the celebrated Il Greppo property, the venerable home of the Biondi-Santi brand, is the arrival of General Manager Giampiero Bertolini (ex-Frescobaldi). He replaces outgoing CEO Olivier Adnot, who was put at the helm of the estate when it was purchased by France's luxury goods firm Européenne de Participations Industrielles (EPI), which also owns the Charles and Piper-Heidsieck Champagne houses as well as Château La Verrerie. I wrote about these changes last year, and you can read my article here: https://winejournal.robertparker.com/montalcino-tenuta-biondi-santi-update. Under Bertolini's management, the plan is to invest 30% of all profits back into the winery and vineyards. Winemaking at Il Greppo will not change, but there is a push to further improve quality. For now, work is being done to map out specific vineyard parcels. More flexibility (and space) is being created in order to ferment those parcels separately. Fermentation and aging at Il Greppo otherwise remain virtually unchanged. Giampiero Bertolini has a new team in place and works alongside Tancredi Biondi Santi (Franco's grandson). The current releases from Biondi-Santi are the 2015 Rosso di Montalcino (that I had previously reviewed last year) and the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino. The estate also has two older vintages on release as well. These are the beautiful 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (to compensate for the fact that a Riserva was not produced in the 2011 vintage) and the extraordinary 1995 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. I had the enormous pleasure to review those older vintages here with a few other cellar treasures for context.

From: Jekyll and Hyde: 2017 Brunello di Montalcino and 2016 Riservas (Dec 2021)
The 1983 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva La Storica is spellbinding, with an eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head display of crushed rocks, dried cherries and plums, complemented by notes of mint, cedar spice box and autumn leaves. You could lose yourself in the bouquet, but then you’d miss the elegant textures and how they wash across the palate, carrying zesty red fruits motivated by earthy mineral tones and bright acidity that keeps the expression remarkably fresh. Frankly, it’s amazing to think that this is a 38-year-old Brunello, as the 1983 finishes remarkably long and with the slightest hint of tannins still remaining, and nuances of clove, balsam herbs and rosy florals lingering on. Bravo. La Storica is a library-release program direct from the winery, with a sticker on the back and a numbered tag around the neck of the bottle to identify it as such. This is a bottling that was reconditioned by Franco Biondi Santi himself in the year 2000. Only 550 bottles were rereleased. It’s also important to note that this was the first vintage that the Riserva was made in the then-new winery and fermented in large, vertical oak vats, as opposed to concrete. It’s a gorgeous expression of time and place.

When Giampiero Bertolini, CEO of Biondi Santi, asked if I’d be up for some research and experiments focused on the vineyards during my visit, he really meant it. While touring the estate, both old vines and newly planted, it was explained how the goal is not to undo what had come before, but to simply put the resources they had to better use. Hence, a study of soils, expositions and genetic material on the estate, and how to use it best. This push is led by Federico Radi, a Sangiovese maven, as well as Viticulture and Winemaking Director of Biondi-Santi. Federico Radi cut his teeth at estates such as Villa Mangiacane, Isole e Olena and Belguardo – Marchesi Mazzei. The tour ended with a sit-down focus on each of the parcels that had been identified throughout the estate, with samples in each glass that had all been vinified the same, yet separate from each other. Each of these wines were then broken down into soil compositions, elevations, PH, acidity, alcohol and more. It was a testing yet eye-opening session on terroir, and it’s exactly this kind of focus that the new team has brought on board here. This year, the 2013 Riserva, as well as the 1983 Riserva La Storica, have been released, and are both included in this report, along with the 2015 Riserva and 1985 Riserva La Storica, which will be released in 2022. Both the 1983 and 1985 were reconditioned by Franco Biondi Santi himself in the year 2000. The 1983 was the first vintage that the Riserva was made in the (at the time) new winery and fermented in large, vertical oak vats, as opposed to concrete. As for the 1985, well, let’s just say that it’s pure magic in a bottle. Also, tasting the new 2018 Rosso di Montalcino Tenuta Greppo was an exciting addition to our lineup. Last year, I spoke of the estate's desire to improve on its quality, such as starting to use a sorting table and including fruit from their lower-elevation Brunello vineyards. While the official note will be released in the upcoming Rosso report, what I can say is that this is a slight departure from the austerity and oxidative style usually found in their Rosso, and a more ethereal effort focused on purity of fruit. When all is said and done, this team is very different from what you’d expect from the Biondi-Santi of old, yet what they’re doing with this historic estate has me very excited about the future.
