De familie Cathiard, eigenaar van Château Smith Haut Lafitte, sloot zich aan bij de club van Bordeaux-wijnbouwers gevestigd in Californië. Het landgoed werd in 1885 gesticht door twee broers uit Schotland, James en William Rennie. Het landgoed veranderde van eigenaar na de drooglegging en opnieuw in de jaren zeventig, totdat het in 2020 werd gekocht door de familie Cathiard. De teelt van de wijnstokken en de productie van de wijnen worden uitgevoerd volgens dezelfde waarden als bij Château Smith Haut Lafitte: een diep respect voor de natuur en haar schoonheid, nauwgezet werk aan de wijnstokken en een traditionele knowhow die een belangrijke rol voor innovatie. Dit landgoed, gelegen in Rutherford, beschikt over 25 hectare wijngaarden.
Cathiard Vineyardkomt uit de Rutherford- en de St. Helena AVA's en ligt aan de voet van het Mayacamas-gebergte, waar wijnboeren het land al meer dan een eeuw cultiveren. De Cathiard Vineyard drukt de individualiteit hiervan uit uniek terroir. De druiven worden met de hand geoogst uit Cathiard's oudste wijngaard op een heuvel. Zodra de druiven de kelder bereiken, worden ze voorzichtig ontsteeld en gesorteerd, om ervoor te zorgen dat de beste hele bessen worden gebruikt. De druiven worden door de zwaartekracht naar fermentatievaten overgebracht en maximaal 5 dagen in de kou laten weken. Tijdens het fermentatieproces worden zachte manipulaties door pump-overs en punch-downs uitgevoerd om de extractie te verbeteren. Na 30 dagen in tanks wordt de wijn uitgelekt, geperst en ondergaat hij een natuurlijke malolactische gisting in nieuw Frans eikenhout.
Van de 2022 jaargang zijn maar 8.000 flessen gemaakt.

Intensely floral with those parfumier’s essences of violets and rose petals. Damson fruit confit. Black cherry. Blueberry. This is sumptuous and gracious with amazing poise and harmony and the most plunge-pool core. Fabulous with a lovely hint of graphite enrobing the fruits. So juicy despite the density”.

Tasted as two pre-blends from different barrels that will be combined to form the final wine, set to be bottled in December 2024, the 2022 Cathiard Vineyard Proprietary Red should prove a solid effort. The first sample showed more red fruit but also some jamminess to the red raspberry notes combined with hints of dark chocolate; the second was slightly herbal and dusty, marked by black cherries. Both were medium to full-bodied, with the first being more open and velvety, and the second was more compact, closed and tannic.
Estate manager Justine Labbé has had a whirlwind introduction to Napa since arriving in time for the 2020 vintage (her first). Even leaving the fires of 2020 aside—although she was able to bottle some excellent wines that year—she's had to deal with drought (2021 and 2022), heat waves (2022) and a late, cool year (2023).
Labbé said 2021 was a very interesting vintage, with a very dry winter and small berries that ripened quickly. "We had low yields and tiny berries—the whole goal of extraction was not to overdo it." The results are some intense and structured wines.
While the 2021s have been bottled and released, we also tasted several barrels likely destined for the top wine in 2022 and 2023. 2022, she said, "was a pretty tough year for us." With the heat wave at the start of September, "some blocks stopped and then resumed [ripening] quickly. Others took three or four weeks." Contrast that to her view of 2023, which she described as an excellent, easy vintage.
There are three wines from this estate, mirroring to some extent the Bordeaux-based owners' origins. After the top-shelf Cathiard Vineyard Proprietary Red comes the Founding Brothers Red Wine, a second wine, which can include some older-vine and hillside lots that just didn't work in the flagship bottling. Hora is an introduction to the property, made from young vine fruit off the valley floor. All three of the bottlings are balanced and relatively restrained in alcohol; the top two wines are structured and age-worthy.

The Cathiard estate's flagship wine is super concentrated, superfine in texture, built for long aging but also enticing to drink soon. It is made from 100% cabernet sauvignon from the oldest vines on the property, planted in 1978. Beautiful flavors of creme de cassis, black cherries, blueberries, orange zest and bitter chocolate are layered and almost delicate. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.
