To my palate, the 2021 Lafite Rothschild has emerged as the finest of the Pauillac first growths this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark minty berries mingled with notions of iris, licorice and cigar box, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a velvety attack that segues into an elegantly dense and structured mid-palate that's nicely framed by sweet but abundant tannins, concluding with a long, penetrating finish.

A brilliant wine that shares some similarities with the formidable 1996, the 2021 Lafite Rothschild wafts from the glass with inviting aromas of dark berries, cigar box, loamy soil, black truffle and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's rich and concentrated, with beautifully powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, saline finish. Of course, this isn't as dramatic as the 2020 or 2019 out of the gates, but the 2021 is a brilliant success in its own right. What's more, its structure and balance mean that it is likely to prove almost immortal. It's a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, which is one of the all-time highest percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon chez Lafite.

Displaying a deep purple-black color, the 2020 Lafite Rothschild takes a little swirling and coaxing to unlock scents of freshly crushed blackcurrants, boysenberries and spiced plums, followed by emerging nuances of red roses, raspberry preserves, underbrush and unsmoked cigars, with a waft of cedar chest. The medium-bodied palate is an exercise in elegance and finesse, featuring tightly wound layers of red and black berries and loads of mineral sparks, framed by finely grained tannins and well-poised tension, finishing with fantastic length and the most stunning perfume. Magnificent achievement. This 2020 is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, coming in at 12.8% alcohol and a pH of 3.9.
Saskia de Rothschild, chairwoman of Domaines Barons de Rothschild, began by saying, “We had to do a lot of reorganization with the pandemic. It was a very precocious vintage. In mid-March, we had to plan ahead and control the vegetative cycle that had already started. The warm spring and the bouts of rain meant there was a lot of organizing to control the mildew. We had to train the cellar teams to learn which shoot to choose in shoot thinning.”
The mildew situation early in the 2020 growing season coupled with the unprecedented COVID lockdown restrictions posed a challenge. Although Lafite is not certified organic, they have been practicing organic methods and are planning to enter into the official organic conversion period (a period of three years) from this year. “We want to consider each vineyard an ecosystem,” Saskia said. “We want to be able to do more. Even with cover crops, for example, or massal selection—it is a collection of practices that give the best expression of terroir.”
Like everywhere in Bordeaux in 2020, Pauillac entered a period of extreme drought from mid-June to mid-August.
“In mid-August, we finally had a lot of rain in Pauillac,” Technical Director Eric Kohler explained. “One hundred millimeters (about four inches) came down. It was a godsend. We had lower alcohol, but we had very intense flavors. The wine is a paradox: it is powerful, but not heavy. We would rather have a lack of ripeness than over-maturation. I think this is the first time we have such contrasts—wines so different from the climate. The rains meant we kept the balance and freshness.”

The 2021 Lafite-Rothschild casts an imposing presence. Black fruit, sage, menthol, licorice and incense give Lafite its dark, almost somber, personality. Cabernet Sauvignon is dialed up, and that very much comes through in the wine's flavor profile and overall feel. The tannins are quite prominent at this stage. In some ways, the 2021 reminds me of the 1996, but with the greater delineation found in today's wines. I can't wait to see how it ages. The 2021 is one of the stars of the Left Bank. Its longevity will ultimately be dictated by storage conditions more than anything having to do with the wine itself.

“It was a year in which we had to make strong decisions,” Technical Director Eric Kohler told me. “Flowering was a bit more challenging at Duhart than at Lafite. Ripeness was not the issue, but mildew pressure was high, especially now that we farm biodynamically. The most challenging period was July 15 to August 15. Yields were 30 and 33 hectoliters per hectare respectively,” he added. As for the wines, they are brooding and quite intense. At times I felt I was tasting wines from the 1990s, but with an added dimension of purity in the fruit.

From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Lafite-Rothschild, which contains the highest proportion of Merlot since the 2016, hit the bull's eye from barrel. Revisiting the wine in the bottle since July, it still bursts from the glass with copious blackberries, touches of blueberry and juniper, pencil lead and a hint of crushed stone. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins, quite linear and "correct" - a quintessential Lafite-Rothschild in many ways. It gently builds in the mouth while keeping a restraint on things, finishing with fine sapidity yet a little more juiciness than you would have found a decade or two earlier. This has the potential to evolve beautifully over several decades.

De wijngaard van Château Lafite Rothschild bestaat uit drie hoofdgebieden: De hellingen rond het Château, het Carruades-plateau in het westen en een terrein van 4,5 hectare in Saint-Estèphe. De oppervlakte bedraagt 112 hectare. De grond bestaat uit fijn, diep grind vermengd met door de wind meegevoerd zand op een goed doorlatende en goed blootgestelde tertiaire kalksteenondergrond. De druivensoorten die hier worden verbouwd zijn Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc en Petit Verdot.
Hier werden de eerste stenen gelegd, werden de huizen van de wijnbouwers gebouwd en begrepen ze dat er iets ongewoons zou gebeuren. In de loop der jaren werd het huis dat uitkijkt op deze heuvel groter en een blauweregen klimplant klom tegen de muren op om generaties families te zien passeren voor wie het behoud van dit ecosysteem altijd de ultieme prioriteit is geweest. 150 jaar geleden plantte barones Betty, echtgenote van baron James, de enorme eikenbomen die onze wijngaard scheiden van de moerassen. Zij, hun kinderen en kleinkinderen, evenals de families van wijnbouwers die zich bij hen voegden, werkten nauwgezet om deze onberispelijke creatie te beschermen die hun door de natuur is nagelaten. Ze hebben veel zorg besteed aan het behoud van deze microkosmos bestaande uit bossen en moerassen, flora en fauna te midden waarvan de wijnstokken van Château Lafite Rothschild gedijen in deze bijna wilde osmose.
Als ultieme getuige van dit beschermde land pronken sommige wijnstokken nog steeds sierlijk met hun 140 jaar ongeënt leven. Ze ontsnapten aan de phylloxera die echter niemand anders spaarde! Dit onfeilbare deel van de wijnstokken blijft de wijnbouwers ontwijken, dezelfde die het, van het ene oogstjaar tot het andere, vormen, beschermen en koesteren in een poging deze perfecte compositie te verfijnen die hen keer op keer verbaast. Het is misschien geen toeval dat Lafite natuurlijk de titel "First of the First" verdiende op de Wereldtentoonstelling van Napoleon III. Het zal ook geen toeval zijn, als anderen er lang na ons over zullen spreken… Elk vat wordt individueel geproefd en alleen het beste wordt geselecteerd voor de uiteindelijke blend. Na het blenden rijpt de wijn 15 maanden in nieuwe eikenhouten vaten. De gisting vindt plaats gedurende 15 dagen bij een gecontroleerde temperatuur van 18°C. Voor de Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild worden alleen wijnstokken gebruikt die ouder zijn dan 10 jaar.
