Eigenaar José Manuel Bento dos Santos, een industrieel chemisch ingenieur, heeft een uitgesproken liefde voor de noordelijke Rhône wijnen. Op een uniek stuk landschap, 70km ten noorden van Lissabon, wordt 15ha aan wijngaarden BIOLOGISCH onderhouden om perfecte druiven te kweken met een extreem lage opbrengst van 20-25hl per hectare. Met ondersteuning van Grégory Viennos (voormalig hoofd wijnmaker bij Chapoutier en Cos d’ Estournel) worden bijzonder mooie wijnen geproduceerd die hun weg inmiddels hebben gevonden in koninklijke kelders en in de beste Europese en Amerikaanse restaurants.
Monte d’ Oiro ‘de gouden heuvel’ is een verwijzing naar de heuvel op de Quinta die een prachtige gouden gloed krijgt als de zon erover schijnt. Het wijnhuis is gelegen in de Appelatie Vinho Regional Lisboa.
De Parcela 24 is het topmodel van Quinta do Monte d'Oiro. Het is afkomstig van 60 jaar oude syrah stokken uit één wijngaard. De stokken zijn klonen uit de Rhône (Hermitage en Côte Rôtie). De Parcela 24 was voorheen bekend als de Syrah "24" en heeft 18 maanden gerijpt op 40% nieuw Frans eiken. Het is strak, intens en jeugdig en is een wijn die u zeker nog een paar jaar dient weg te leggen maar daarvoor zult u zo beloond worden want als de tannines zijn versmolten en de harde randen zijn verdwenen wordt de krachtpatser juist een elegante wijn met een hoofdletter E. Vol en krachtige wijn met intense aroma’s van rijp cassisfruit, vanille, zwarte peper en een eindeloos lange afdronk. Indrukwekkend mooi!

The 2015 Parcela 24 (formerly known as the Syrah "24") was aged for 18 months in 40% new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Since this was last seen, it has become just a little softer, but (unlike the Reserva) it is still very hard-edged. It is still tight, intense and astringent. The fruit, at least, can now be found, but this still needs some cellaring. In demeanor, it is brighter, crisper and more lifted than the lusher Reserva, apart from that hard edge. The mid-palate finesse is exceptional, making it seem very refined and sophisticated. This is still all about potential, but it has begun to give us a peek at what's underneath. Just a peek, though. It's still hard to read. It's enough to merit an uptick in score with optimism controlling for the moment, but remember that this is only for those with some patience and a cellar. It will probably sing around 2025. This runs around 50 euros in Portugal, but it is not imported at this time.

The 2016 Parcela 24 (formerly known as the Syrah "24") was aged for 18 months in 40% new French oak. It comes in at 13.95% alcohol. Silky but smooth, this is a wine that impresses with its precision and finesse most of all, but it has its share of fruit too. As always, this does have a certain understatement to it, but its elegance and sophistication are among its best qualities. With aeration, the tannins come out to play, but they aren't impossibly hard. What this most lacks is some cellaring. It will come into better balance and evolve with some time and aeration. It is easy to underestimate this graceful Syrah, but it seems pretty brilliant for the moment, with a lot of its potential to become more obvious only after a few years in the cellar. It should age beautifully thereafter. Not imported, this runs around 50 euros in Portugal, where it will be released in September 2021. That short delay won't be nearly enough to allow this to blossom, so prepare to cellar it for another year or two, at least.
Organic certification is coming but not yet here. The winery says, "Almost all of our red wines (except for the QMdO Red 2018 which we also sent you) are not yet certified organic, only because of the sulfites level. We have been working [toward] lowering this level in a consistent way for all the vintages, and we should have all the red wines certified shortly. Dit wijngebied in Portugal, zo’n 50 kilometer ten noorden van Lissabon staat al sinds de 17e eeuw bekend om zijn geweldige terroir. De invloed van de Atlantische Oceaan en de kalk- en kleigronden geven dit gebied haar unieke terroir. Graça Gonçalves leerde wijnmaken o.a. van haar vader en speelde een grote rol in het omschakelen naar biologische productie op Quinta do Monte d’Oiro.
