De Lafite Rothschild 2018 is samengesteld uit 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8,5% Merlot en 0,5% Petit Verdot en heeft een alcoholpercentage van 13,3%. Met zijn diepe paars-zwarte kleur heeft hij flink wat walsen nodig om de bedwelmende geuren van zwartebessenlikeur, gebakken pruimen en zwarte kersencompote vrij te geven, met een ondertoon van donkere chocolade, drop, gietijzer, cederhout en vruchtbare leem, plus een vleugje potloodslijpsel. Het verfijnde, middelzware gehemelte straalt klasse uit, met lagen van mineraal doordrenkte zwarte vruchten en voortreffelijk rijpe, kenmerkende Lafite-tannines, eindigend met een epische lengte en diepte. Deze verbluffende, verfijnde expressie van het oogstjaar 2018 met zijn unieke Lafite-karakter zal een goede 7-8 jaar in de fles nodig hebben en zal daarna de komende 40+ jaar blijven imponeren.

The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot and has 13.3% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock intoxicating scents of blackcurrant cordial, baked plums and black cherry compote with an undercurrent of dark chocolate, licorice, cast-iron pan, cedar chest and fertile loam, plus a waft of pencil lead. The delicately crafted, medium-bodied palate is dripping with class, featuring layers of mineral-laced black fruits and exquisitely ripe, singularly Lafite tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. This simply stunning, delicately crafted expression of 2018 with its singularly evocative imprint of Lafite will require a good 7-8 years in bottle, then should continue to inspire awe over the following 40+ years.
“2018 was like a difficult child to begin that turned out to be a genius,” Lafite’s Technical Director Eric Kohler informed me, hardly able to contain his excitement about this vintage. “The finish to this vintage was so perfect in terms of maturation!”
“It started out really wet—more wet than rainy,” Kohler continued. “On the Right Bank and Sauternes, they got more rain. Same with Margaux. There was a lot of mildew pressure. Here at Lafite, the pressure from the mildew was lower than the Right Bank or Sauternes. We lost less than 5% here. We are close to organic with our farming, but not entirely. We were able to control the situation.
And then from mid-July it became very dry and very hot. This was the hottest summer since 2003. Of course, it was not as extreme as 2003. This is why the potential of the terroir was very important. What is a great terroir? It is a terroir that can compensate for the excesses of the vintage. The terroir must have the capacity to behave like a sponge—to retain or give water. The sponge of clay that we have at Lafite regulated the excess of the vintage. This year instead of the humid wind from the west we got a dry wind from the northeast. So, there was no risk of botrytis as harvest approached. 2016 and 2018 are like two brothers, the former easier to manage, the latter more trouble and potential excess, but very great in the end."
Kohler also commented, "Duhart-Milon does not have the clay/water holding capacity of Lafite, but a little rain at the end of August/beginning of September got the vineyard through. The Merlot performed very well—Duhart-Milon might just have better terroir for Merlot than Lafite. Duhart-Milon is very opulent this year. For the dry whites, it was a very hot summer and so maybe the dry whites will not be so aromatic."

The 2018 Lafite-Rothschild is a stunning wine. Silky and floral, the 2018 offers all the signatures of the Grand Vin, but amplified by the radiance of the year. In the glass, Lafite is rich and exotic, yet it also retains tremendous vibrancy. The interplay of Merlot picked early and Cabernet Sauvignon harvested late makes for wine of extraordinary dimension, complexity and class. Graphite, dark red fruit, spice and leather linger on the huge finish. Magnificent!

De wijngaard van Château Lafite Rothschild bestaat uit drie hoofdgebieden: De hellingen rond het Château, het Carruades-plateau in het westen en een terrein van 4,5 hectare in Saint-Estèphe. De oppervlakte bedraagt 112 hectare. De grond bestaat uit fijn, diep grind vermengd met door de wind meegevoerd zand op een goed doorlatende en goed blootgestelde tertiaire kalksteenondergrond. De druivensoorten die hier worden verbouwd zijn Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc en Petit Verdot.
Hier werden de eerste stenen gelegd, werden de huizen van de wijnbouwers gebouwd en begrepen ze dat er iets ongewoons zou gebeuren. In de loop der jaren werd het huis dat uitkijkt op deze heuvel groter en een blauweregen klimplant klom tegen de muren op om generaties families te zien passeren voor wie het behoud van dit ecosysteem altijd de ultieme prioriteit is geweest. 150 jaar geleden plantte barones Betty, echtgenote van baron James, de enorme eikenbomen die onze wijngaard scheiden van de moerassen. Zij, hun kinderen en kleinkinderen, evenals de families van wijnbouwers die zich bij hen voegden, werkten nauwgezet om deze onberispelijke creatie te beschermen die hun door de natuur is nagelaten. Ze hebben veel zorg besteed aan het behoud van deze microkosmos bestaande uit bossen en moerassen, flora en fauna te midden waarvan de wijnstokken van Château Lafite Rothschild gedijen in deze bijna wilde osmose.
Als ultieme getuige van dit beschermde land pronken sommige wijnstokken nog steeds sierlijk met hun 140 jaar ongeënt leven. Ze ontsnapten aan de phylloxera die echter niemand anders spaarde! Dit onfeilbare deel van de wijnstokken blijft de wijnbouwers ontwijken, dezelfde die het, van het ene oogstjaar tot het andere, vormen, beschermen en koesteren in een poging deze perfecte compositie te verfijnen die hen keer op keer verbaast. Het is misschien geen toeval dat Lafite natuurlijk de titel "First of the First" verdiende op de Wereldtentoonstelling van Napoleon III. Het zal ook geen toeval zijn, als anderen er lang na ons over zullen spreken… Elk vat wordt individueel geproefd en alleen het beste wordt geselecteerd voor de uiteindelijke blend. Na het blenden rijpt de wijn 15 maanden in nieuwe eikenhouten vaten. De gisting vindt plaats gedurende 15 dagen bij een gecontroleerde temperatuur van 18°C. Voor de Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild worden alleen wijnstokken gebruikt die ouder zijn dan 10 jaar. Hoewel elke vintage uniek is, is er meestal een groot deel Cabernet Sauvignon, dan Merlot, met een kleine bijdrage van Petit Verdot.
