De La Mission Haut-Brion 2018 is een blend van 53,5% Merlot, 42,9% Cabernet Sauvignon en 3,6% Cabernet Franc. Diep granaatpaars gekleurd, komt uit het glas met een eerste golf van gestoofde zwarte en rode pruimen, moerbeien en zwarte frambozengeuren, gevolgd door uitgesproken noten van warme cassis, kruidnagelolie, viooltjes en chocoladedoos, met hints van gietijzer pan, potloodlood en bosbodem komen na een paar minuten door. De medium tot volle smaak glinstert van energie en levert laagjes rood en zwart fruit op met aardse en minerale vonken en een textuur die zo satijnachtig is dat je niet moet vergeten ernaar te zoeken, en eindigt met een verbazingwekkende levendigheid. Dit is zo wonderbaarlijk suggestief en uniek, en toch voelt het alsof het iets tegenhoudt. Het levert op dit moment een indrukwekkend glas op, maar geef het een goede 5 jaar op fles om verdere nuances naar voren te laten komen en verwacht dat het degenen die een goede 12-15 jaar kunnen wachten, serieus zal belonen, terwijl het echt op gang zou moeten komen.
Het voorjaar van 2018 wordt gekenmerkt door regelmatige stormregens. De wijnstok ontwikkelde een prachtig vegetatief oppervlak, maar de groei werd vertraagd door de gewelddadige verstoring van 26 mei. Ze herstelde zich echter snel. De maand juni is mild, waardoor een uniforme bloei mogelijk is. Een hete zomer volgde, gepaard gaande met zeldzame neerslag. Veraison vindt plaats in zeer goede omstandigheden. In september treedt de anticycloon in werking. We oogsten onder een stralende zon, alle druivensoorten worden rijp geplukt en de gezondheidstoestand is perfect.

The 2018 La Mission Haut-Brion is a blend of 53.5% Merlot, 42.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3.6% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it emerges from the glass with a first wave of stewed black and red plums, mulberries and black raspberries scents, followed by pronounced notions of warm cassis, clove oil, violets and chocolate box, with hints of cast-iron pan, pencil lead and forest floor coming through after a few minutes. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energy, delivering layers of red and black fruits with earthy and mineral sparks and a texture so satiny you need to remember to look for it, finishing with amazing vibrancy. This is so wonderfully evocative and singular, and yet it feels like its holding something back. It makes for an impressive glass right now, but give it a good 5 years in bottle to allow further nuances to emerge and expect it to seriously reward those who can wait a good 12-15 years, when it should really hit its stride.
Domaine Clarence Dillon pretty much nailed it across the board in 2018, from the first growth(s) in Pessac to the Saint-Émilion wines; to the more humbly priced, larger volume offerings; and even the whites, which were also tricky considering the heat. All the wines are ripe and seductive, true to what 2018 wanted to give as a vintage, and yet they possess bags of bright fruit, energy and freshness. “The first key to success this vintage was to start the first mildew treatment in the vineyards a little bit earlier than usual,” Deputy Managing Director Jean-Philippe Delmas of Domaine Clarence Dillon informed me. “If you did that, you were protected. If you didn’t, you had to constantly run after the disease. The second challenge was the date of the harvest—the date was finally quite late. The best solution was to wait to get ripeness but to pick before there was heaviness or the wines got too fat.”
I asked Delmas which he loved more this year, Cabernet or Merlot? “I loved everything,” he promptly replied. “And on the Right Bank, the Cabernet Franc was wonderful this year, which isn’t always the case. I would say Right Bank and Left Bank are the same for quality.”

Enticing aromas of currant, crushed stone, blueberry, lead pencil, iodine and graphite follow through to a full body with round, chewy tannins that are polished and powerful, yet balanced and beautiful. In the end, the tannins are compact and tight at the finish. But you want to drink it. Try after 2027, when it will open.

From: The Future’s Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Nov 2019)
The 2018 La Mission Haut-Brion was picked from 10 September to 2 October at 44hL/ha. It has a perfumed and wonderfully delineated bouquet with blackberry, briary, pressed violets and graphite aromas, perhaps even more precise than the Haut-Brion at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins. This is almost clinical in terms of precision, symmetrical, with a powerful, almost Burgundian finish that reveals amazing persistence. This is a fabulous La Mission Haut-Brion and a contender for one of the wines of the vintage.

Château la Mission Haut-Brion ligt in de appellatie Pessac-Léognan, gerangschikt onder de Crus Classés in de Graves-classificatie van 1953. La Mission Haut-Brion is het zusterbedrijf van Château Haut-Brion. Het wijnhuis behoort tot het wijngebied Graves, in de gemeente Talence met bijkomend landgoed in Pessac. Het wijnhuis produceert ook een tweede wijn van jongere wijnstokken, La Chapelle de la Mission, sinds de vintage van 1991, en de droge witte wijn Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc sinds de fusie van Château Laville Haut-Brion in 2010.
De wijngaardes strekken zich uit over 21 hectare tussen Pessac en Léognan, met een verdeling van 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot en 7% Cabernet Franc. Het landgoed produceert jaarlijks gemiddeld tussen de 6.000 en 7.000 kisten van zijn grand vin La Mission Haut-Brion. Voor de tweede wijn La Chapelle de la Mission, worden gemiddeld 4.000 kisten geproduceerd. De witte Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, heeft een jaarlijkse productie van 500 tot 700 kisten.
