De Bouchard Père & Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is volgens James Suckling een chardonnay-meesterwerk en heeft deze ook de maximale score gegeven van 100/100 punten. De Bouchard Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru heeft een uiterst subtiele neus van citrus, wilde kruiden en bloemen en is adembenemend. Verbluffende concentratie, zuiverheid en precisie op het genereuze maar zeker niet massieve gehemelte. De chardonnay druiven komen van een 2,33 hectare wijngaard. Van biologisch geteelde druiven.
Technisch directeur Frédéric Weber en zijn team hebben weer een mooie vintage chez Bouchard Père & Fils gerealiseerd, beginnend met oogsten op 19 augustus met handmatig selectie om de uitgedroogde bessen te verwijderen. De wijngaarden deden het goed ondanks een aanzienlijk tekort aan water, wat getuigt van een wijnbouw die tot de beste van de grote huizen behoort uit de Bourgogne. Ze maken een tansitie door naar organisch/bio-dynamisch met tal van vooruitstrevende innovaties die ongetwijfeld op korte termijn navolgers zullen vinden bij andere grote spelers. De resulterende wijnen zijn in ieder geval prachtig geworden, met alcoholpercentages in de buurt van 13% tot 13,5%. De witte wijnen van Bouchard worden gebotteld onder DIAM-sluitingen.

The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru reveals attractive aromas of citrus oil, mandarin and pear, framed by subtle hints of fresh pastry, cut flowers and nutmeg. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a broad attack that segues into a ripe core of nicely concentrated fruit, underpinned by lively acids. This bottling hails from the three terraces on the hillside above Bouchard's La Cabotte, their bottling from the latter—which adjoins Montrachet itself—being more muscular and powerful whereas this cuvée is finer-boned and more ethereal.
Bouchard's Frédéric Weber was demonstrably satisfied with his 2018 portfolio, and he has every reason to be. Ripe but controlled, this is a very consistent range of fleshy but structured reds—which readers might think of as a more rounded version of the 2005 vintage—and elegant, fragrant whites. Indeed, only the house's Clos de Bèze showed signs of over-ripeness, as the grower who supplies the grapes for this cuvée insisted on picking late. So, as the accompanying notes attest, there are plenty of wines that merit consideration chez Bouchard this year. That's great news, as everyone wins when Burgundy's standard bearer négociant houses flourish.
A short but intense vegetative period, Weber told me, was characterized by low disease pressure, so treatments in the vineyards remained largely organic. Yields were lower than 2017 in Pinot Noir but considerably higher in Chardonnay, and the Bouchard team performed a green harvest for the first time since 2009. Weber began picking on August 30th, and due to the high concentration of tannins and above-average number of seeds, he opted for comparatively brief macerations—on average, between 10 and 12 days—and extracted the reds cautiously. And generous volumes meant that he could be selective when pressing the whites, thereby capturing more freshness. Given the heterogenous results up and down the Côte, Bouchard purchased less wine from its suppliers this year than usual. The firm intends to keep back a sizable percentage of the 2018s, Weber added, to release at a later date—an admirable plan in an era when Burgundy with bottle age is scarcer and scarcer on the marketplace.

The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has an impressive bouquet of mineral-rich citrus fruit, smoke, honeysuckle and jasmine aromas, complex and alluring. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, with plenty of tangerine and grapefruit notes, but it is the mineralité and tension that really elevate this Grand Cru. For once, this might outperform the La Cabotte.

“For the reds in 2018, the winter was very wet and not so cold, twice the rainfall of a normal year," head winemaker Frédéric Weber told me as we tasted in their grotto-like cellar in Beaune. "That was very important as it meant there was moisture in the soil. Spring was a little later than usual and the weather became hot, sunny and dry. The growing season was impressive, the vines very vigorous so that was difficult for the vineyard team. Disease pressure was low as the weather was dry, and a strong northerly wind dried the grapes. August saw high temperatures, 300 more hours of sun than a normal year and 2°C higher in average temperature, so the maturity arrived sooner. Consequently I started picking 30 August with the Pinot Noir. It was a normal crop for Pinot Noir, 35-42hl/ha, Chardonnay more generous, up to 52hl/ha, so we green harvested to eliminate excess bunches - the first time since 2009. We also did not deleaf to protect from the sun. We adapted the vinification: reducing the time in the press and a maximum of 17°C during alcoholic fermentation in the tank and at the end, racking with a lot of lees into barrel. There was a lot of seeds in the berries, which is why I did a soft maceration without punching down the cap, preferring a 10-day infusion. There were low malic levels and malo was a little longer than usual, finishing in June for the whites, but it was quicker for the reds. The reds will be bottled in March to May, later than 2017s. "
