Biondi Santi is een van de meest sprekende producenten van de Brunello wijn. Biondi Santi is al meer dan 150 jaar eenvan de meest toonaangevende wijnproducenten uit Toscane en wordt gezien als de "Founder of Brunello di Montalcino" Door het microklimaat en de geologische ontwikkeling van dit gebied door de jaren heen zijn de heuvels rond Montalcino een van de oudste en meest perfecte gebieden van Italië om mooie kwaliteitswijnen te maken. In de 16e eeuw was Montalcino al befaamd vanwege hun geweldig mooie wijnen. De echte bekendheid kreeg Montalcino echter pas nadat de Brunello was gemaakt. Dit geschiedde voor het eersin 1888. De eerste Brunello wijnen werden gemaakt door Ferruccio Biondi Santi. Hij heeft het werk van zijn grootvader Clemente Santi, een van de meest toonaangevende wijnmakers in die tijd, verder doorontwikkeld. De 2015 Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wordt geleverd in genummerde flessen en wordt uitsluitend geproduceerd in uitmuntende jaren en staat bekend om zijn lange rijpingspotentieel.​ 2015 was zoals bij de kenners bekend als een absoluut top jaar en dat wordt ook ondersteund door de (zeer) hoge beoordelingen
Kleur: Intens robijnrood.​
Neus: Complex bouquet met tonen van zwarte bessen, granaatappel en pruimen, verweven met mediterrane kruiden zoals tijm, rozemarijn en salie, tegen een achtergrond van bosgrond. ​
Smaak: Zijdezacht en complex, met aroma's van framboos en rijpe pruim, subtiele hints van sinaasappelschil en melkchocolade. Elegant en levendig, met goed geïntegreerde tannines en een frisse zuurgraad; een dynamische, lange afdronk met groot potentieel. ​

The Biondi-Santi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is initially a reticent wine and one that does not immediately subscribe to the overstated abundance and exuberance of the vintage. Give it time. I wrote this review after several tastings over several days so I could ensure a more accurate account of the wine's elegant reveal. Contemplative and exceedingly nuanced in personality, with wild berry, underbrush, ferrous earth and candied orange peel, this has everything to look forward to in terms of its future evolution in the bottle. It displays a pretty ruby color that borders on garnet and polished copper. A silky, mid-weight palate is accented by beautifully managed and silky tannins (this aspect of the mouthfeel is extraordinary), bright freshness and long-lasting fruit momentum. The alcohol is a bit more powerful in this release (at 14.5%), but the effect is supple and smooth nonetheless. I tasted bottle number 256.
Tenuta Biondi Santi does not usually release bottle production numbers, but I can confirm that 2,000 bottles of the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva are earmarked for the United States market.

Complex yet pure, subtle and refined nose that gently evolves, with mossy red cherries, dried roses, chalk, tar and dried orange peel. There is a lift of clove and eucalyptus that makes it so distinctive. A powerful, medium-to full-bodied Brunello, but seamless and bright, with a fine, transparent mid-palate and restrained, mineral austerity. Understated complexity that will need time to bloom. Hold until 2026.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva pulls you close to the glass with a deep and seductive display of black raspberry preserves complemented by sweet sage, dried roses and pipe tobacco. With further coaxing, it gains in volume and lift, taking on hints of mint and camphor. This greets the palate with undeniable elegance, casting velvety waves of violet-tinged wild berries and sweet spices across a motivating core of juicy acidity, as a subtle coating of round tannins forms toward the close. While structured and incredibly long, energy remains high, as nuances of cherry pits offset by sour citrus and hints of cedar fade. It’s amazing to experience such energy and purity from a young Biondi Santi Riserva. As pretty as the Annata released last year was, I worried that the extended aging for the Riserva might rob the wine of some of its fruit; instead it is the complete opposite, as this contains the depth and complexity of the best wines of the vintage. I can’t wait to see how the 2015 matures over the next several decades.

When Giampiero Bertolini, CEO of Biondi Santi, asked if I’d be up for some research and experiments focused on the vineyards during my visit, he really meant it. While touring the estate, both old vines and newly planted, it was explained how the goal is not to undo what had come before, but to simply put the resources they had to better use. Hence, a study of soils, expositions and genetic material on the estate, and how to use it best. This push is led by Federico Radi, a Sangiovese maven, as well as Viticulture and Winemaking Director of Biondi-Santi. Federico Radi cut his teeth at estates such as Villa Mangiacane, Isole e Olena and Belguardo – Marchesi Mazzei. The tour ended with a sit-down focus on each of the parcels that had been identified throughout the estate, with samples in each glass that had all been vinified the same, yet separate from each other. Each of these wines were then broken down into soil compositions, elevations, PH, acidity, alcohol and more. It was a testing yet eye-opening session on terroir, and it’s exactly this kind of focus that the new team has brought on board here. This year, the 2013 Riserva, as well as the 1983 Riserva La Storica, have been released, and are both included in this report, along with the 2015 Riserva and 1985 Riserva La Storica, which will be released in 2022. Both the 1983 and 1985 were reconditioned by Franco Biondi Santi himself in the year 2000. The 1983 was the first vintage that the Riserva was made in the (at the time) new winery and fermented in large, vertical oak vats, as opposed to concrete. As for the 1985, well, let’s just say that it’s pure magic in a bottle. Also, tasting the new 2018 Rosso di Montalcino Tenuta Greppo was an exciting addition to our lineup. Last year, I spoke of the estate's desire to improve on its quality, such as starting to use a sorting table and including fruit from their lower-elevation Brunello vineyards. While the official note will be released in the upcoming Rosso report, what I can say is that this is a slight departure from the austerity and oxidative style usually found in their Rosso, and a more ethereal effort focused on purity of fruit. When all is said and done, this team is very different from what you’d expect from the Biondi-Santi of old, yet what they’re doing with this historic estate has me very excited about the future.
