Zinfandel is a beloved wine grape known for its rich history, versatility and ability to produce a wide variety of wines.

The general belief has always been that Zinfandel, identical to Primitivo, is a Californian variety, but recent DNA testing has traced its roots back to vineyards in Croatia. This fickle grape is one of the most widely planted grapes in the US, just after Cabernet Sauvignon. Zinfandel is also known as the "heritage grape" in California due to its long history in the state.

The style of Zinfandel red wines varies considerably from fresh and fruity to highly concentrated fruit with firm tannins. Zinfandels are usually light to full-bodied with berry-like and spicy flavors. The grape is also widely used in the popular off-dry blush wine known as White Zinfandel. This is usually much sweeter and lighter in taste than red Zinfandel. With a Tropicana flavor profile, it's easy to drink and won't cost a fortune, but some wineries are redefining White Zinfandel by making great dry rosés, which are worth trying for a new Zinfandel experience. The Red Zinfandel goes well with moderately spiced meat dishes and stews. A Zinfandel can often be traced back to the aromas of red berries, blackberries, anise and pepper. It is also a grape that is very suitable for Appassimento and has similarities with a beautiful Amarone, with the major difference that in Puglia the grape can dry on the vine.
