History of Château Rauzan-Ségla
Château Rauzan-Ségla has a long and storied history dating back to the 17th century. The estate was originally part of the larger Rauzan estate, which was split into four separate properties in 1762. The part that would become Rauzan-Ségla was acquired by Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségla, and the estate has carried his name ever since. Over the years, the building changed owners several times and experienced periods of prosperity and decline. At the end of the 19th century, the estate was owned by the Frey family. However, like many properties in Bordeaux, it faced challenges during the phylloxera and economic downturn. In 1994, Château Rauzan-Ségla was purchased by the Wertheimer family, who also own the famous luxury goods company Chanel. The Wertheimers have invested in the estate and worked to restore its reputation for producing high quality wines.
Production of Château Rauzan-Ségla
Château Rauzan-Ségla is known for producing wines, mainly from the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate has approximately 66 hectares of vineyards and the terroir is characterized by gravelly soil, typical of Margaux. The vineyards are planted with vines that are on average about 35 years old.
Wine production at Rauzan-Ségla involves traditional practices including careful selection of grapes, fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and aging in oak barrels. The estate produces both the grand vin, Château Rauzan-Ségla, and a second wine called "Ségla".
