Recognizably Valandraud, in a lighter style than in recent years. The Valandraud 2023 is a lush Saint-Émilion endowed with remarkable textural richness and tons of intensity. This feels truly pushed to the limit, yet pulls back at the very last second. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, liquorice, and menthol saturate the palate. Will need a few years to shed some baby fat.
FUN FACT: In the 'Attachments' tab, you will find the official factsheet for this fine wine. We will automatically send this to you upon ordering this wine. The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and if you come to collect the wine, you will often receive a nice discount . You will see your discount immediately when you select 'Pick up' on the checkout page. We are located in Dordrecht, almost next to the A16, with ample parking. Click here for our address. It is also worth mentioning that we purchase the (Bordeaux) wines directly and never acquire them through intermediaries, as we would then not know the journeys the wine has made or how it has been treated. The wines come directly from the cellars of the Chateau to our climate-controlled warehouse in Dordrecht, where all our wines are stored .

(96-97)Lots of dark fruit with an edge, supported by chalky tannins. Compact and concentrated, with a fresh medium body. The crunchy, chalky tannins help balance the wine’s exuberance. This shows an attractive combination of power, focused tannins, freshness and exuberant fruit, with hints of black mushrooms and ink. Aged for 20 months in 90% new oak and 10% foudres. 84% merlot, 9% cabernet sauvignon and 7% cabernet franc.

(96-99) The 2025 Valandraud is breathtaking. Its the first vintage made by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Marie Lefévère together. It therefore represents a changing of the guard, now that Lefévère and her husband, Christophe, have taken full ownership of the property after many years holding a minority stake. Vibrant and explosive in the glass, the 2025 Valandraud offers an exotic mélange of dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and mocha. There's gorgeous precision here, much of that coming from more finesse in the tannins. The 2025 is utterly magnificent. Élevage is 90% new oak and 10% 15HL _foudres). Tasted two times.

(94-96) The 2025 Valandraud was picked from September 12 to October 4 and matured in 90% new oak, the rest in wooden casks. It has an intense nose with black cherry, cassis and violet scents, more bold than the Virginie de Valandraud but perhaps slightly less delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins, very well balanced with good depth of fruit, spicier than the Virginie towards the finish. Good grip, more than the Virginie, this will require three to five years in bottle, but it has great potential.

Two thousand twenty-five marks a new chapter at Valandraud. Jean-Luc Thunevin had promised that he would step back when he reached the age of 75 and has sold the estate outright to Marie and Christophe Lefévère, owners of Château Sansonnet and Soutard-Cadet. A decade of planning ensured a smooth transition. It should be noted that Thunevin will keep his toe in the water and retain both Le Clos du Beau-Père in Pomerol and Clos Badon. “Jean-Luc allowed us to be more present in the vineyard in recent years,” Marie Lefévère said. “We have become stricter in selecting the plots that go into Valandraud, deselecting some that were stressed, so there is 15-20% less of the Grand Vin than usual. From now on, Virginie de Valandraud will only come from the limestone plateau, and there is a 50% decrease in that cuvée.” Readers will also notice a couple of new single-site cuvées, La Côte Milon and Le Calvaire, that will not be sold en primeur, though both showed great promise; I look forward to revisiting them in bottle.

After a 12-year career as a bank clerk, then a grocer and restaurateur in St. Emilion before ending up as a négociant wine merchant, Jean-Luc Thunevin plunged into the adventure of Ch. Valandraud. In 1989, he decided to make his own wine with his partner Murielle and found a terroir on the hill of Fongaban (the name Valandraud is a contraction of 'Vallon' and 'Andraud', the name of his partner). In 1990 he didn't have chais yet, so he bore the fruits to the cooperative.
In 1991, they made the wine in a workshop of their house, which they called the "garage", an old winemaking cellar belonging to the Bécot family. This is how the term 'garage wine' was born, all the more so that the chai was closed off like a garage. Because Thunevin did not have large resources (for example, he did not have an ontrister) the berries were picked by hand, which was already a good selection at the time, after all, bad berries were already excluded. He didn't have pumps either, so he had to manually pour the berries into the cuves. The principle of gravity was forced to become a fact here. After all, he did not have large cuves and was again forced to let malolactic fermentation take place in small barriques, a system that is now also very popular. All these fortuitous factors contributed to a beautiful wine that received rave press, and which, although the terroir was not known, was now classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the new classification of 2012.
