A FIRST - EXPECTED EARLY 2028
Winery Château Quintus
Château Quintus belongs to Domaine Clarence Dillon, the family behind Château Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. The estate took on its current form following the purchase of Château Tertre Daugay in 2011 and was later expanded with plots from Château L'Arrosée. The vineyards are situated on and around the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, where clay and limestone provide tension, freshness, and refined tannins. Le Dragon de Quintus is the second wine of Château Quintus and is made with the same attention to precision as the Grand Vin. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Le Dragon de Quintus comes from Saint-Émilion, one of the most important appellations on the right bank of Bordeaux. The Quintus vineyards are situated on a particularly varied terroir, with limestone plateaus, clayey slopes, and different exposures. This variation gives the wine its combination of ripe fruit, freshness, and refined structure.
The 2025 vintage was characterized by a warm and dry growing season, yet the wines did not feel heavy or overripe. The calcareous soils played an important role in preserving freshness. Merlot benefited from the ripeness of the year, while Cabernet Franc brought extra aromatic tension and precision. The result is a Le Dragon de Quintus that stands out primarily for its clarity, balance, and a lively, chalky undertone.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The blend of Le Dragon de Quintus 2025 consists of 74.8% Merlot and 25.2% Cabernet Franc. Merlot forms the soft, juicy heart of the wine and provides aromas of red cherries, plums, and ripe red fruit. Cabernet Franc brings floral notes, spiciness, freshness, and extra length.
The balance between Merlot and Cabernet Franc is important for the style of this vintage. Where Merlot provides roundness and immediate charm, Cabernet Franc offers more definition and tension. As a result, the wine feels not only accessible but also precise and clearly connected to the chalky terroir of Saint-Émilion.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested plot by plot based on optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the emphasis is on careful selection and gentle extraction so that the refined structure of the fruit is preserved. This is important for Le Dragon de Quintus, as this wine is focused on elegance and balance rather than pure power.
The vinification aims to preserve the clarity of the fruit and the chalky precision of the terroir. Aging takes place partly in oak, where the wood influence remains supportive. In 2025, this approach aligns well with the character of the year: ripe fruit, fresh acidity, fine tannins, and a smooth yet structured mouthfeel.
Color, smell and taste
Le Dragon de Quintus 2025 opens with a bright and lively aroma of red cherries, plums, strawberries, and raspberries. Behind this, notes of rose petals, mint, spices, and a subtle touch of licorice emerge. The aromatics feel pure and precise, with a light chalky freshness that gives the wine extra tension.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, supple, and refined. The fruit is pure and lively, with red cherry, plum, and soft spiciness at the core. The tannins are fine and rounded, making the wine appear accessible without being simple. The Cabernet Franc provides extra lift and creates a floral, lightly spicy line through the wine.
What stands out most is the balance between immediate charm and serious structure. James Suckling emphasizes the precision, definition, and chalky tension. Antonio Galloni describes the wine as supple and attractive, with soft roundness around red fruit, spices, and rose petals. Neal Martin points out the lively aroma, minty freshness, and refined tannins. The other reviews also confirm this picture: Le Dragon de Quintus 2025 is expressive, fresh, and elegant, with sufficient depth to develop further in the coming years.

Parker
The 2025 Le Dragon de Quintus, a blend of 74.8% Merlot and 25.2% Cabernet Franc (30% new oak), reveals aromas of spice, dark berries and a touch of mocha. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy, dense and concentrated, it shows a noticeable imprint of new oak at this stage, with structuring tannins, even if the palate remains unctuous and fresh, maintaining balance despite its current firmness.
Formerly Tertre Daugay, the estate entered a new phase when Domaine Clarence Dillon acquired it in 2011, later incorporating L’Arrosée. The subsequent purchase of Château Grand-Pontet extended the footprint and introduced complementary terroirs, reinforcing a steady consolidation on the Right Bank. The vineyard now covers some 45 hectares in a single block overlooking the Dordogne, while Grand-Pontet contributes parcels closer to the village, rooted in clay-limestone soils with a slightly different exposition.
Viticulture proceeds with rigor: soils are worked, grass is mown between the rows, and canopy height is maintained, with tressage practiced in selected parcels. Harvest takes place parcel by parcel, with careful sorting and gravity-fed vatting. Extraction remains measured, and the wines spend their first year in barrels, followed by racking, after which they continue élevage in older wood. No sulfur is added until the conclusion of malolactic fermentation.
The style has shifted incrementally. Early vintages showed a firmer frame; more recent releases privilege clarity of fruit and finer tannins, with oak less in evidence. The 2025s come across as classical, defined by aromatic precision and well-shaped structures, where Cabernet plays a supporting but structuring role without excess weight. Le Dragon de Quintus offers earlier approachability, while the grand vin reflects the breadth and exposure of the plateau. Grand-Pontet remains bottled separately, delivering a rounder, more immediate expression. Refinements continue—longer élevage, more precise harvest dates and better-integrated cooperage—guiding the estate forward without display.

James Suckling
Very pure, precise and medium-bodied with great definition. There’s brightness that really helps. Chalky, with agreeable, ethereal fruit. 74.8% merlot and 25.2% cabernet franc.

Vinous
The 2025 Le Dragon de Quintus has a bright and lively bouquet, with peppermint-tinged red fruit that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, smooth and sensual, with very fine tannins and a poised, lingering finish. This is a classy Le Dragon de Quintus that should give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure. - By Neal Martin on May 2026
The 2025 Le Dragon de Quintus is a delight, supple and forward, with gorgeous, pure fruit. The Dragon has a ton to offer in 2025. Soft curves wrap around a core of red cherry/plum fruit, spice and rose petal. All the elements are so nicely balanced. - By Antonio Galloni on April 2026

Château Quintus is a prestigious wine estate located in Saint-Émilion, one of the most famous wine regions in Bordeaux, France. The castle has a rich history dating back to Roman times, but it was revived in 2011 when it was acquired by Domaine Clarence Dillon, the owner of some of the most legendary wineries in Bordeaux, such as Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
Vineyards and Terroir
Château Quintus covers about 28 hectares of vineyards, located on the heights of the famous limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. This location offers an ideal terroir for the production of high-quality wines, thanks to its well-drained limestone soils that provide excellent drainage and water retention, and its altitude that contributes to thermal regulation, which is beneficial for the ripening of the grapes.
Viticulture and Winemaking
The vineyards are planted with a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the two main grape varieties of Saint-Émilion. The viticultural practices at Château Quintus are focused on sustainability and respect for the environment. This includes manual harvesting and meticulous selection of grapes to ensure that only the best fruit is used for wine production.
The vinification at Château Quintus combines traditional techniques with modern innovations. The grapes are carefully fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete barrels, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, some of which are new. This process helps develop the complex flavors and aromas that characterize the wines of Château Quintus.
Wines
Château Quintus produces primarily red wine, which is known for its elegance, complexity, and aging potential. The estate's top wine is Château Quintus, which regularly receives high scores from wine critics. In addition, the estate produces a second wine, Le Dragon de Quintus, which is intended to provide an earlier drinking experience while still maintaining high quality.
Tasting notes
The wines of Château Quintus are praised for their rich and concentrated flavors of ripe red and black fruits, such as cherries, plums, and cassis, complemented by subtle notes of spice, tobacco, and mineral accents. The tannins are usually well integrated and the acidity provides a refreshing balance, giving the wines a long and elegant finish.
