A FIRST - EXPECTED EARLY 2028
Winery Château Quintus
Château Quintus belongs to Domaine Clarence Dillon, the family behind icons such as Château Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. Since the purchase of Château Tertre Daugay in 2011 and later Château L'Arrosée, one of the most ambitious projects in Saint-Émilion has been under construction. The vineyards are situated on a spectacular limestone promontory on the western side of Saint-Émilion, featuring multiple exposures and an exceptional combination of limestone, clay, and slopes. Château Quintus is now regarded as one of the fastest-rising stars of the appellation. According to Cellar Master Claude Diligeart, 2025 will even become the new benchmark against which future vintages of Quintus will be compared. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Origin, terroir and vintage 2025
The vineyards of Château Quintus are situated on a dramatic limestone plateau in Saint-Émilion. The combination of limestone, clay, and elevation changes gives the wine its characteristic tension, minerality, and refined tannins. Due to its location, Quintus benefits from both sun exposure and natural freshness, which is a significant advantage, especially in warmer years.
The 2025 vintage was characterized by a sunny and warm growing season with small, concentrated grapes. Thanks to intensive work in the vineyard and a deep understanding of the terroirs, the grapes remained remarkably fresh and energetic. According to vineyard manager Pauline Comin, 2025 combines the structure of 2019, the depth of 2020, and the energy of 2022 in a single vintage. The harvest took place between September 8 and 22, 2025 , relatively early but under ideal conditions.
Vineyards and grape varieties
Château Quintus 2025 consists of 73.2% Merlot and 26.8% Cabernet Franc . That relatively high proportion of Cabernet Franc gives the wine extra tension, floral refinement, and length, while Merlot provides depth, richness, and texture. The blend clearly demonstrates the philosophy of Quintus: combining ripeness with precision and terroir expression.
Merlot provides a broad, generous core of dark fruit, while Cabernet Franc adds extra lift and aromatic definition. Moreover, the chalky soils impart a subtle mineral tension that, according to the château, is essential for the style of Quintus. According to Cellar Master Claude Diligeart, the blend was established early on and immediately confirmed itself as exceptionally strong.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes were harvested plot by plot at optimal ripeness and carefully selected to process only perfectly healthy fruit. The small berries of 2025 yielded concentrated must with high aromatic intensity and ripe phenols.
Vinification at Quintus revolves around precision and balance. Extraction is controlled to build structure without losing finesse. The wine ages in 40% new French oak barrels , sufficient to impart extra texture and refinement without overshadowing the terroir. The provisional alcohol content is 14% , yet remarkably, the wine remains fresh, energetic, and exceptionally harmonious.
Style, scent and taste
Château Quintus 2025 opens deep and expressive with black cherries, ripe plums, cassis, and dark forest fruit. These are followed by spices, liquorice, dark chocolate, and floral notes, along with subtle mineral nuances and a refined chalky tension.
The first impression on the palate is strikingly precise and generous at the same time. The château speaks of a broad, tangible texture that completely fills the palate, supported by concentrated fruit and a striking freshness. As the wine opens up, increasing depth and minerality emerge, with an almost briny precision in the finish. The tannins are present, yet refined and fully integrated.
James Suckling calls Quintus 2025 a beautiful expression of fruit with focus and definition and awards the wine 97-98 points. Jean-Marc Quarin praises the precision and intense aromatic development, while Neal Martin emphasizes the dark chocolate notes and luxurious finish. William Kelley speaks of a concentrated wine with youthful tannins and a classic, graphite-like finish. What impresses most is the combination of power, freshness, and refinement, without ever becoming heavy.
Development and storage potential
Château Quintus 2025 possesses the structure, freshness, and concentration to age excellently. In its youth, the wine will impress primarily with its deep fruit core, tension, and floral precision.
With further bottle aging, more notes of graphite, cigar box, dark chocolate, dried herbs, and earthy nuances develop. The combination of ripe fruit, Cabernet Franc, and chalky terroirs suggests a long lifespan. A drinking window from approximately 2032 to 2060 seems realistic, depending on personal preference.

Parker
The 2025 Quintus, a blend of 73.2% Merlot and 26.8% Cabernet Franc (39.5% new oak), reveals a dark, somewhat brooding bouquet of dark wild berries, blackberry, cassis and spice, with a more noticeable oak imprint at this stage. Medium- to full-bodied, layered, dense and concentrated, it’s structured and framed by youthful tannins and concludes with a spicy, lead pencil–inflected finish that underscores its somber character. It will need to gain in flesh and integration with élevage to achieve greater balance.
Formerly Tertre Daugay, the estate entered a new phase when Domaine Clarence Dillon acquired it in 2011, later incorporating L’Arrosée. The subsequent purchase of Château Grand-Pontet extended the footprint and introduced complementary terroirs, reinforcing a steady consolidation on the Right Bank. The vineyard now covers some 45 hectares in a single block overlooking the Dordogne, while Grand-Pontet contributes parcels closer to the village, rooted in clay-limestone soils with a slightly different exposition.
Viticulture proceeds with rigor: soils are worked, grass is mown between the rows, and canopy height is maintained, with tressage practiced in selected parcels. Harvest takes place parcel by parcel, with careful sorting and gravity-fed vatting. Extraction remains measured, and the wines spend their first year in barrels, followed by racking, after which they continue élevage in older wood. No sulfur is added until the conclusion of malolactic fermentation.
The style has shifted incrementally. Early vintages showed a firmer frame; more recent releases privilege clarity of fruit and finer tannins, with oak less in evidence. The 2025s come across as classical, defined by aromatic precision and well-shaped structures, where Cabernet plays a supporting but structuring role without excess weight. Le Dragon de Quintus offers earlier approachability, while the grand vin reflects the breadth and exposure of the plateau. Grand-Pontet remains bottled separately, delivering a rounder, more immediate expression. Refinements continue—longer élevage, more precise harvest dates and better-integrated cooperage—guiding the estate forward without display.

James Suckling
A beautiful expression of fruit with focus and great definition. A tight balance between the chalky tannins, linear acidity and fruit. 73.2% merlot and 26.8% cabernet franc.

Vinous
The 2025 Quintus, picked September 8 to 22, has the most opulent bouquet from Domaine Clarence Dillon, with lavish black cherries, cassis and blood orange scents, and a big bunch of violets developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte, smooth tannins. A little lower in acidity, yet it maintains balance and comes armed with a seductive, dark chocolate-tinged finish that is a bit of a guilty pleasure. Very luxuriant.

Château Quintus is a prestigious wine estate located in Saint-Émilion, one of the most famous wine regions in Bordeaux, France. The castle has a rich history dating back to Roman times, but it was revived in 2011 when it was acquired by Domaine Clarence Dillon, the owner of some of the most legendary wineries in Bordeaux, such as Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
Vineyards and Terroir
Château Quintus covers about 28 hectares of vineyards, located on the heights of the famous limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. This location offers an ideal terroir for the production of high-quality wines, thanks to its well-drained limestone soils that provide excellent drainage and water retention, and its altitude that contributes to thermal regulation, which is beneficial for the ripening of the grapes.
Viticulture and Winemaking
The vineyards are planted with a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the two main grape varieties of Saint-Émilion. The viticultural practices at Château Quintus are focused on sustainability and respect for the environment. This includes manual harvesting and meticulous selection of grapes to ensure that only the best fruit is used for wine production.
The vinification at Château Quintus combines traditional techniques with modern innovations. The grapes are carefully fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete barrels, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, some of which are new. This process helps develop the complex flavors and aromas that characterize the wines of Château Quintus.
Wines
Château Quintus produces primarily red wine, which is known for its elegance, complexity, and aging potential. The estate's top wine is Château Quintus, which regularly receives high scores from wine critics. In addition, the estate produces a second wine, Le Dragon de Quintus, which is intended to provide an earlier drinking experience while still maintaining high quality.
Tasting notes
The wines of Château Quintus are praised for their rich and concentrated flavors of ripe red and black fruits, such as cherries, plums, and cassis, complemented by subtle notes of spice, tobacco, and mineral accents. The tannins are usually well integrated and the acidity provides a refreshing balance, giving the wines a long and elegant finish.
