PREMIERE OFFER - AVAILABLE SPRING 2028 | Magnum edition
Château Phélan Ségur 2025 is one of the most successful wines from Saint-Estèphe in this vintage. Several tasters even place this edition among the best the château has produced in recent decades. The wine combines the classic Saint-Estèphe signature with striking refinement, in which structure, freshness, and aromatic complexity are beautifully balanced.
Château Phélan Ségur
Château Phélan Ségur is situated in one of the most prominent locations in Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde. The estate was founded in the early nineteenth century by Bernard Phélan and grew into one of the references of the appellation. The vineyards cover approximately 70 hectares and are distributed across various plots with gravel and clay soils that benefit from the influence of the estuary.
Under owner Philippe Van de Vyvere, quality has continued to rise in recent years thanks to investments in both vineyard management and vinification. Work is carried out with a strong focus on sustainability, biodiversity, and plot-by-plot vinification. The result is wines that combine power with precision and display an increasingly refined style.
Phélan Ségur 2025
In 2025, the blend consists largely of Cabernet Sauvignon, which is immediately reflected in the character of the wine. The vintage is characterized by classic aromas of cassis, graphite, cedarwood, and tobacco, combined with strikingly pure fruit expression and a fresh undertone.
Many connoisseurs particularly emphasize the precision of this wine. While some recent Bordeaux vintages were characterized by richness and power, Phélan Ségur 2025 opts more for elegance, definition, and tension. The wine possesses sufficient concentration for long-term aging, yet simultaneously displays a remarkable refinement that makes it appealing to lovers of classic Bordeaux.
The harmony between fruit, acidity, and tannins is striking. Everything seems to fall carefully into place. Several tasters speak of a wine that combines the structure of great Saint-Estèphe with an almost refined, nearly Burgundian finesse. That combination makes this vintage particularly interesting.
Scent and taste
The nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, dark cherries, and blue fruits. Behind these follow layers of graphite, cedarwood, cigar box, violets, mint, and subtle spices. With additional aeration, notes of cocoa, flowers, and mineral nuances also emerge.
On the palate, the wine presents itself as medium to full-bodied, with an impressive balance between ripe fruit and fresh tension. The tannins are refined and powdery in texture, immediately giving the wine a sense of precision and length. Dark fruit, graphite, spices, and a light minerality gradually build towards a long and controlled finish.
What is particularly impressive is the combination of energy and control. The wine possesses sufficient power and depth to develop for years, yet avoids excess. As a result, the focus remains entirely on finesse, length, and terroir expression.
Storage potential and drinking window
Thanks to its Cabernet-driven structure, fresh acidity, and refined tannins, Château Phélan Ségur 2025 possesses excellent aging potential. Although the wine will be approachable relatively early, many connoisseurs expect it to reveal its full complexity only after several years of bottle aging.
Expected drinking window: 2032-2055+.

(96-97) Château Phélan Ségur St.-Estèphe 2025. Well composed, structured and nicely framed, with a medium to full body and fine, firm tannins. Textural and slightly chalky on the palate. Solid and focused, with a long, driven finish. A elegant, refine and holistic wine. The shows depth structre and finesse. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, and 2% petit verot.

Vinous
(93-95) The 2025 Phélan Ségur was picked between September 10 and 26 at 29 hl/ha, matured in 55% new oak barrels. Again, this is a Saint-Estèphe that is cut in a more mellow and classical style compared to the 2020 or 2022, for example. Mainly black fruit, the Cabernet-dominated scents of cedar and tobacco emerge within a couple of swirls, with just a light touch of tea leaves in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-boned tannins matched by a silver thread of acidity. Very well balanced and unequivocally in the more elegant style, without the concentration or voluptuousness of the 2022. This is more sleek and refined, ergo, an earlier-drinking Phélan Ségur that delivers elegance and refinement. Just a lovely Saint-Estèphe that was presumed vanquished by global warming. Drinking Window: 2030 - 2055.

“The choices of maturation and extraction were very important,” Cellar Master Fabrice Bacquey told me. The timing of harvest vis-à-vis the rain was vital for tannin quality. We had higher levels of stress on the deeper gravels, especially with the younger Merlot vines. We began picking these parcels on September 10 and then terraces three, four and five. This is a little later than some neighbours because the fruit was not ripe enough for us. We needed that extra rain to ‘relax’ the tannins. Sometimes we picked ten hectares a day using 100 pickers, which is now possible using the contract company as of the last two years. We had to extract very carefully with no délestage, though we are not doing what is called ‘infusion.’ The maceration was shorter, 23 days maximum for the Cabernet instead of the usual 26. Yields were 29 hl/ha before sorting.”
(91-93) The 2025 Phélan Ségur is a gorgeous but quiet wine. Hints of dark raspberry, rose petal, mint, spice, mocha and blood orange fill out the layers. The fruit profile is more red-leaning than in many years, while the 2025 is on the lighter side structurally. It will be interesting to see what élevage brings. Savory overtones from the Cabernets suggest a bright future. There's certainly plenty to look forward to. Drinking Window: 2033 - 2055.

Winery Château Phélan Ségur is located in Saint-Estèphe. The vineyard covers some 70 hectares with beautiful clay-gravel soil on the hills and plateaus of Saint-Estèphe. The plots consist of 4 large sections and are adjacent to the vineyards of Châteaux Montrose and Calon Ségur, among others. The plant density is high. The blend of grape varieties is traditional: the talented duo of the Médoc (58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot) is complemented by a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (1.5% of each).
Cabernet Sauvignon, the king of the Médoc grape varieties, brings incomparable strength and structure: it is the backbone of the Grand Vin. Merlot exudes an attractive roundness and unparalleled suppleness. To preserve diversity and bring a touch of spice, Petit Verdot entered the winery in 2015. It excels on heavier soils where clay dominates. It is a vigneron variety, boisterous and requires perfect control. Cabernet Franc, which has always had its place at the Château, is a precious asset in the blend, with its finesse and floral notes.
The Médoc is characterized by its mild, temperate maritime climate and has ideal conditions for a seasonal cycle that is clear enough to accompany the annual growth of the vine and mild enough to dampen climate extremes. The vines of Château Phélan Ségur are close to the estuary: this protects them from harsh winters and sometimes very hot summers. The soil of Saint-Estèphe is very complex and Château Phélan Ségur is a perfect illustration of this. It consists of a thick layer of gravel that was deposited by the river several hundred thousand years ago. The pebbles and especially the gravel covered with clay sand (clay gravel) form the sloping landscape of a large part of Saint-Estèphe.
History
Winery Phélan Ségur, with its Irish roots, has been working for 4 generations for more than 2 centuries with passion and respect for the terroir to make the most beautiful wines. At the end of the 18th century, the young Irish wine merchant Bernard O'Phelan (1770-1841) left his native Tipperary and decided to settle in Bordeaux. The city of Bordeaux was then an important trade hub with the British Isles. Close relationships were built up between the families that bought and sold regional wines. These ties were such that they led to alliances and even marriages, in particular that of Bernard Phélan with one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known merchant in the Bordeaux wine market. Aided by his father-in-law's experience, he also had a vision to start producing his own wines. In 1805 he bought Clos de Garramey, located in Saint-Estèphe, and then in 1810 the estate Ségur de Cabanac.
In the middle of a park whose fields extend as far as Saint-Estèphe, the Palladian-style castle dominates the top of a hill overlooking the estuary. When designing the château, the owners, the Phélan family, did not hesitate to break with the architectural habits of the time, to build a castle centered on wine. Rather than designing it as a prestigious mansion, isolated from the manufacturing activity, they preferred to include the barrel room and cellar in the heart of the castle, in an undeniably beautiful ensemble. At the time, they were one of the first to furnish their barrel chamber in the “Médoc style”.
After the death of Bernard O'Phelan in 1841, the estate, jointly named Château Ségur de Garramey, was passed on to his son Frank (1820-1883). The latter, a médocain at heart, even though he was a true Irishman, would dedicate his life to further enhancing the fame and quality of the winery's wines. In addition, he became mayor of Saint-Estèphe and as such remained in that post for 30 years. He made progress within the Irish community in Bordeaux, which included the Johnston, Barton, Clarke and Lynch families. At the beginning of the 20th century, Château Ségur de Garramey was given its current name Château Phélan Ségur. A name synonymous with classical and noble values that subtly combines a sense of innovation and heritage.
The Gardinier family has, after more than 30 years running the winery, decided to hand over the baton to Philippe Van de Vyvere. For Philippe, who is a great wine lover, this acquisition is the fulfillment of one of his most cherished dreams.
