Winery Château Petit-Village

Château Petit-Village is one of the historic names of Pomerol and is centrally located on the Catusseau plateau, among some of the appellation's most famous estates. The history of the château dates back to the eighteenth century, and since 2020 it has been in the hands of the Moulin family, who also own Château Beauregard. Since the takeover, a strong emphasis has been placed on further quality improvement, stricter plot selection, and organic farming. The estate works with a relatively small, contiguous plot of approximately 10.5 hectares, which allows for a very precise approach. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

In 2025, only 6,000 bottles were produced, which is exceptionally low; consequently, very little of this wine can be found, making it always highly sought after. Therefore, if you are looking for a collector's item at a good price, this is highly recommended. Moreover, Château Petit Village enjoys a special location on the famous Pomerol plateau, surrounded by iconic neighbors such as La Conseillante, Vieux Château Certan, and Le Pin. This places the wine literally among the absolute top of Pomerol, but in a significantly more affordable price range.

Region, climate and location

Petit-Village is situated on one of the highest points of the Pomerol plateau, at an altitude of approximately 38 meters. The estate is located in the historic “Golden Triangle” section of the appellation and benefits from a combination of clay, quartz, flint, and gravel soils over a subsoil of blue clay. This composition proves particularly valuable in warm and dry years, as the deep clay layers can retain moisture and thus preserve freshness.

The 2025 vintage was characterized by a relatively dry and warm summer, interspersed with heatwaves. At the same time, nights remained relatively cool, and just enough rain fell in late August to restore the grapes' balance. As a result, alcohol levels remained moderate and acidity remarkably fresh. The small grapes and low yields produced a concentrated wine, but without heaviness or overripeness. The result is a modern yet classic Pomerol with striking tension and precision.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The historic Petit-Village estate forms a single contiguous triangle of approximately 10.5 hectares. The vineyard is situated almost entirely on the elevated Catusseau plateau and borders some of Pomerol's most prestigious terroirs. The oldest vines date back to the 1940s and 1950s, while the average age is around 53 years. For the 2025 vintage, the blend consists of 60% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Notable is the relatively high proportion of Cabernets, which is atypical for Pomerol and gives Château Petit-Village its own distinct signature. Cabernet Franc, in particular, played a significant role in 2025. The grape brought aromatic lift, tension, and a refined structure, while Cabernet Sauvignon added extra length and grip. The Merlot provides roundness, texture, and the classic sensuality for which Pomerol is known.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The first Merlot was harvested on September 3, followed by the Cabernets from September 17. The yield was only 16 hectoliters per hectare, exceptionally low even for Pomerol. The grapes were hand-picked and rigorously selected, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Damaged or underripe grapes were removed to use only fruit of the highest quality.

After destemming, a second densimetric selection followed, followed by manual control. Fermentation took place in small concrete vats, allowing for individual work on each plot. Gentle extractions and manual remontage were deliberately chosen to preserve finesse and detail. Maceration lasted approximately 20 to 25 days, depending on the potential of each plot. Malolactic fermentation took place in vats.

The wine ages for approximately 16 months in French oak barrels, 45% of which are new. Additionally, about 20% is aged in larger 500-liter barrels to preserve extra balance and subtlety. In total, five different coopers are employed. The estate is certified organic and strongly committed to sustainable viticulture.

Color, smell and taste

Château Petit-Village 2025 immediately stands out for its combination of refinement and energy. The nose opens somewhat restrained at first, but clearly gains depth with air. Ripe black cherries, cassis, and dark forest fruit are complemented by violets, dried flowers, and subtle floral nuances that are strikingly present in this vintage. Behind these emerge notes of graphite, cedarwood, fine spices, cocoa, orange zest, and a light touch of truffle.

What makes this 2025 special is the tension between creaminess and precision. The Merlot provides a round, almost velvety texture, while Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon ensure length, freshness, and direction. The tannins are compact, refined, and powdery in texture. Despite the low yields and concentration, the wine never feels heavy. There is plenty of energy on the mid-palate, supported by striking minerality and subtle salinity towards the finish.

The structure is classic and serious, yet strikingly elegant at the same time. Several tasters note the combination of floral notes, dark fruit, and an almost chalky precision. The wine clearly develops in the glass, revealing increasingly more layers, with nuances of black olive, herbs, mocha, and lightly toasted spices. The finish is long, fresh, and precise, with violets, dark berries, and a light touch of blood orange lingering for a long time.

Development and drinking window

Château Petit-Village 2025 possesses clear aging potential and will benefit from a few years of bottle maturation. The wine is already impressive in its youth thanks to the refined tannins, but will gain complexity as tertiary aromas develop. Based on various professional assessments, the optimal drinking window lies roughly between 2032 and 2055, with the best bottles likely able to mature even longer.

Château Petit-Village takes its name from the small hamlet of Catusseau, where the Château is located, next to Ch. l'Evangile, Ch. La Conseillante en Vieux Ch. Certan. The terroir is perfect for a large Pomerol (clay-stone). The château was owned by Axa Millésimes (as well as Ch. Pichon Longueville Baron in Pauillac) until they sold it in March 2020 to the Cathiard (of Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte and Ch. Beauregard) and the Moulin family (Galleries Lafayette).
