EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED END OF 2027/BEGINNING OF 2028

Aile d'Argent 2025 confirms once again why this white wine from Château Mouton Rothschild belongs among the absolute references of Bordeaux Blanc. In a vintage that was harvested early and required great precision in the cellar, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy's team managed to create a wine that is both rich and refined. The combination of ripe fruit, tension, minerality, and subtle oak influences results in a white Bordeaux that effortlessly combines gastronomic allure with impressive drinkability.

Aile d'Argent from Château Mouton Rothschild

Aile d'Argent is the iconic white wine of Château Mouton Rothschild. Although the château is best known worldwide for its legendary Premier Cru Classé from Pauillac, the estate has been producing one of the most highly regarded dry white wines of Bordeaux since the 1980s.

The vineyards are situated on sandy and gravelly soils within the Mouton Rothschild estate. These relatively poor soils result in low yields and a high aromatic concentration. Thanks to the combination of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and a small amount of Muscadelle, a wine is created that possesses both freshness and complexity.

Volume 2025

The 2025 was characterized by a warm and dry growing season in which the grapes ripened early. The Mouton Rothschild team had to constantly anticipate the rapid development of the fruit. As a result, the harvest took place earlier than usual, making the preservation of freshness a key focus.

To create extra depth and texture, Technical Director Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy opted for more bâtonnage during aging. This choice gave the wine extra volume and complexity without compromising the lively tension that characterizes the vintage.

Assembly and upbringing

The blend consists of 63% Sauvignon Blanc, 29% Sémillon, 7% Sauvignon Gris, and 1% Muscadelle. Sauvignon Blanc provides freshness and aromatic precision, while Sémillon ensures structure, depth, and aging potential. Sauvignon Gris adds extra texture, and the small amount of Muscadelle provides a subtle floral nuance.

The wine matured in French oak barrels, 45% of which were new. This aging process supports the wine's structure and adds refined notes of spices, cedar, and toasted nuances without dominating the fruit.

Color, smell and taste

Aile d'Argent 2025 presents a light golden yellow with a bright sparkle. The nose opens with aromas of candied citrus, lime, pear, green apple, and white flowers. As the wine opens up, notes of mint, chalk, flint, and subtle spices follow.

On the palate, the wine displays a beautiful combination of richness and tension. Ripe citrus fruits, green mango, pear, and white stone fruit are supported by lively acidity and a distinct mineral undertone. The extra bâtonnage provides a creamier texture and more volume in the mid-palate, while the wine simultaneously remains taut and energetic.

In the long finish, notes of flint, chalk, cedarwood, and a light spiciness appear. The wine possesses a striking precision and elegance that make it excellently suited for gastronomic applications.

Summary of professional reviews

James Suckling awards 96-97 points and describes the wine as serious, complex, and mineral, with impressive length and great precision. Antonio Galloni rates the wine 91-93 points and particularly praises the combination of citrus confit, white flowers, mint, and chalky tension.

Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate awards 90-92 points and emphasizes the elegance, freshness, and refined structure of the wine. According to him, the citrus aromas, white fruits, and subtle spiciness make for a particularly successful expression of Aile d'Argent.

Château Mouton Rothschild is an icon of Pauillac. This legendary estate combines a rich history, unique terroir, and wines that belong to the very top worldwide. A name that fascinates wine lovers and collectors generation after generation.

History of Château Mouton Rothschild

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the Château Brane-Mouton estate in Pauillac and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. His aim was to serve his own wine to his distinguished guests. In 1922, his great-grandson Philippe de Rothschild took over. Two years later, he decided that all wines should be bottled at the château itself — a revolutionary move in Bordeaux at the time. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the famous 1855 classification.

Later, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took the helm. She modernized the estate and in 1962 opened a museum on the property. After her passing in 2014, the château came under the leadership of her children Camille, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais, keeping it very much a family affair.

Location and terroir in Pauillac

Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, close to the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from the mild maritime climate and the protection of the nearby Les Landes forest. The soil is made up of gravel over layers of clay and limestone. This unique combination delivers powerful yet elegant wines with great ageing potential.

Pauillac itself is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations. The village is home to three Premier Grands Crus Classés: Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and of course Château Mouton Rothschild.

Grapes and winemaking at Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate covers about 90 hectares of vineyards. Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up more than eighty percent. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small portion of Petit Verdot complete the blend. Together they provide wines with depth, structure, and complexity.

The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. In the impressive cellars, they are vinified in modern oak vats, with each parcel treated separately. This ensures that the character of each plot can fully express itself in the final wine.

Special wines from the estate

Alongside the Grand Vin, the château also produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton. Made from younger vines, it is approachable earlier in its life. There is also a white wine, Aile d’Argent, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and a touch of Muscadelle. Fresh, aromatic, and released only in small quantities.

Another signature of Château Mouton Rothschild is the label art. Since 1945, a world-renowned artist has been commissioned each year to design a unique label. Names such as Picasso, Miró, and Warhol have all contributed, making these bottles true collector’s items.
