EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED SPRING 2028

The 2025 Château Malescot St Exupéry is a Margaux with a strikingly charming and accessible style, without compromising on structure and depth. The wine combines ripe, sunny fruit with freshness and precision, resulting in an expression that is both immediately appealing and has potential for further development.

Winery Château Malescot St Exupéry

Château Malescot St Exupéry is a Troisième Grand Cru Classé from Margaux and is known for its elegant, often slightly riper style within the appellation. The château has been working with Michel Rolland for decades and has developed into a reliable producer of refined, accessible Bordeaux with a distinct Margaux signature. The focus is on balance, softness, and aromatic expression, with finesse and charm at the forefront. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

The wine and blend

The 2025 is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. This classic Margaux blend combines structure and depth with roundness and aromatic complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone and freshness, while Merlot contributes to the soft, juicy character and Petit Verdot adds extra spiciness and color.

Terroir and vintage 2025

The vineyards are situated on the typical gravelly soils of Margaux, which ensure good drainage and optimal ripening of the grapes. The 2025 vintage is characterized by a ripe and sunny style, in which the team has succeeded in preserving freshness and balance. The harvest took place between September 18 and 29, with manual picking and rigorous selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar. This careful approach translates into a wine with ripe fruit, but also sufficient tension and structure, something that is also evident in the tastings.

Vinification and aging

Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks, without the addition of yeasts, ensuring a natural expression of the fruit. Maceration lasted 8 to 12 days, aimed at gentle extraction. The wine then ages for 14 to 16 months, 45% of which is in new oak. Additionally, sur lie aging with bâtonnage plays a role in developing extra texture and complexity. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, which contributes to its intensity and structure.

Color, smell and taste

Deep and brilliant ruby red in color. On the nose, aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, and black cherries, complemented by notes of pencil shavings, licorice, and a subtle spiciness. The aromatic expression is open and seductive, with a clear purity.

On the palate, medium to full-bodied, with a juicy core of ripe fruit. The texture is silky and round, with fine, powdery tannins that provide structure without dominating. Fresh acidity creates tension and balance, keeping the wine lively despite its ripe character. The finish is long, harmonious, and elegant, with a light briny and mineral note.

Summary of professional reviews

The 2025 Château Malescot St Exupéry receives 92-94 points from William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), who describes the wine as rich, fleshy, and seductive, with notes of blackberries, plums, and licorice. The style is characterized by a juicy core of fruit and refined, powdery tannins. The wine is seen as a charming and accessible Margaux, with a good balance between ripeness and structure.

Food and wine pairing

This Margaux pairs well with classic meat dishes such as sirloin, lamb, or veal. Dishes with mushrooms or light spices also complement the wine's soft texture and fresh acidity.

In 1955, Paul and Roger Zuger acquired the estate, when it had no more than 7 hectares - today the property consists of 28 hectares. Three generations of the Zuger family have worked in turn to put the estate back on the map and restore its reputation. In 1994 Jean- Luc took over from his father Roger, and the estate continues to grow from strength to strength.

Château Malescot St Exupéry dates back to the 18th century, with records of viticulture on the estate as early as 1616. In 1865, the estate was classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Over the years, it has seen several owners and undergone various changes, but it has maintained a reputation for producing high-quality Bordeaux wines.

The estate has HVE certification. (High Environmental Value) - which means they have to adhere to strict vineyard protocols and constantly work towards more biodiversity in the vineyards.
