Carruades de Lafite 2025 demonstrates once again why this second wine from Château Lafite Rothschild belongs to the absolute top of Bordeaux. Refinement, freshness, and precision take center stage, but in a style that is often slightly more accessible than the grand vin. The 2025 combines energy, depth, and striking elegance.
Carruades de Lafite
Carruades de Lafite is the prestigious second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, a Premier Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac. While the grand vin revolves around absolute perfection and extreme selection, Carruades often offers a slightly more direct insight into Lafite's style. The wine is made from carefully selected plots, including younger vines and terroirs that just fall outside the final selection for Château Lafite Rothschild.
It is precisely because of this that Carruades has developed its own identity. The wine combines the refined signature of Lafite with slightly more openness in its youth. In strong vintages, Carruades manages to reach an impressive level and is considered one of the most coveted second wines of Bordeaux. You can find more information about the château under the Winery tab.
Origin and growing season in Pauillac
The 2025 growing season in Pauillac was marked by great contrasts. A wet winter was followed by a very dry spring and a warm summer. Nevertheless, Château Lafite managed to preserve the freshness in the grapes remarkably well. According to the Lafite team, the younger vines in particular benefited from the conditions, allowing them to reach full ripeness earlier than usual.
For Carruades, it was precisely the combination of different grape varieties and terroirs that proved particularly successful. Cabernet Sauvignon brought striking freshness, Cabernet Franc showed promising finesse, and certain Merlot plots developed more slowly, adding extra tension and balance to the final blend. The harvest took place between September 2 and 20.
Grapes and vinification
The blend of Carruades de Lafite 2025 consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. That relatively high proportion of Merlot and Cabernet Franc typically gives Carruades slightly more accessibility and roundness than Lafite's grand vin, without losing the classic Pauillac signature.
The selection for Carruades becomes more precise every year. Younger vines that perform optimally and plots with exceptional expression play an increasingly important role. According to the château, the combination of power, freshness, and energy literally formed the “winning combination” for Carruades in 2025. Vinification focuses on precision and refinement, with only the best lots being selected for the final blend.
Style and taste profile
Carruades de Lafite 2025 displays much of the elegance for which Lafite is famous, but in a style that often opens up sooner. Expect refined aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, cedarwood, and violets, complemented by subtle graphite notes and fresh herbs.
On the palate, the wine displays energy and tension. The tannins are fine and precise, while the fresh core provides length and refinement. The presence of Cabernet Franc adds extra aromatic lift, while Merlot provides suppleness and texture. As a result, the 2025 looks set to be a particularly complete Carruades, offering both early drinking pleasure and excellent aging potential.

Parker
A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet France and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2025 Carruades de Lafite exhibits notes of sweet plums and berries mingled with notions of orange zest, cedar and cigar wrapper. Medium- to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a gently chalky finish, it checks in at 12.5% alcohol.

Vinous
The 2025 Carruades de Lafite has quite an understated bouquet that needs a little more encouragement than usual. Blackberry, pencil box and light estuarine scents gradually unfurl. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, with sapid black fruit on the entry, gentle grip, wonderful balance and plenty of freshness and brightness on the finish. What a superb Carruades.

Tasting at Lafite-Rothschild with Saskia de Rothschild and winemaker Eric Kohler was one of the highlights of my trip. The Grand Vin is a contender for wine of the vintage. Low yields caused by the initiation florale, together with rainfall at the end of June and July (plus 55 mm at the end of August), were all key to the quality of the resulting wine. I have tasted Lafite-Rothschild from barrel since the late 1990s, and I can remember few that I found so seductive, so profound at this stage. Perhaps what has changed in recent years, apart from de Rothschild’s sense of momentum, is that there is slightly more body and grip to the First Growth. That is not to say it has the backbone and density of Latour, but it has more presence than it had 10 or 15 years ago. This is also reflected in the vastly improved Carruades de Lafite. No, the 2025 Lafite-Rothschild is not going to be cheap. But it is going to be astounding.
The 2025 Carruades de Lafite is a total stunner. It's a great example of how Bordeaux has come along in the last few decades, in that it could have easily been a Grand Vin from another generation—maybe not from a great year, but from many years. Brisk acids and strong floral overtones immediately convey energy. Hints of lavender, rose petal, graphite and spice box are classic Lafite; all the Carruades lacks vis-à-vis its sibling is the classic Lafite mid-palate. This should blossom beautifully with time, and I would be in no rush to open it. What a delight.

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild consists of three main areas: The slopes around the Château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a 4.5 hectare site in Saint-Estèphe. Its area is 112 hectares. The soil consists of fine, deeply ground mixed with windblown sand on a well-drained and well-incorporated tertiary limestone subsoil. The grape varieties grown here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Here the first stones were laid, the winegrowers' houses were built and prepared for something unusual to happen. As the years passed, the house overlooking this hill got bigger and a wisteria vine climbed the walls of generations of families to see how preserving this ecosystem has always been the ultimate priority. 150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate our vineyard from the marshes. They, their children and grandchildren, the families of winegrowers die with them, work conscientiously to protect this impeccable creation that has been bequeathed to nature. They have taken great care to preserve this microcosm of forests and marshes, flora and fauna amidst the vines of Château Lafite Rothschild thrive in this almost wild osmosis.
As the ultimate witness to this protected land, some of the vines still gracefully show off their 140 years of ungrafted life. They escaped the phylloxera which, however, spared no one else! This infallible part of the vines continues to elude the winegrowers, the same ones who form, protect and nurture it, from one harvest year to the next, trying to refine this perfect composition that amazes them time and time again. It may not be a coincidence, of course, that Lafite earned the title of "First of the First" at Napoleon III's World's Fair. Nor will it be a coincidence, if others will speak of it long after us… Each barrel is tasted individually and only the best is selected for the final blend. After blending, the wine matures for 15 months in new oak barrels. Fermentation takes place for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Only vines older than 10 years are used for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild. While each vintage is unique, there is usually a large portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, then Merlot, with a small contribution of Petit Verdot.
