Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2025 demonstrates once again why this second wine from Château Haut-Brion is among the most sought-after second wines of Bordeaux. Hailing from the same historic estate as the Grand Vin, Le Clarence combines the refinement and complexity of Pessac-Léognan with a more accessible character. The 2025 vintage offers great depth, aromatic precision, and a striking balance between ripe fruit, freshness, and structure.
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion: the second wine of an icon
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is produced by Château Haut-Brion, one of the five Premiers Grands Crus Classés of Bordeaux. The wine takes its name from Clarence Dillon, the American entrepreneur who acquired the estate in 1935 and played a significant role in the modern history of Haut-Brion.
Although Le Clarence is more accessible than the Grand Vin, the wine benefits from the same vineyards, the same terroir, and the same meticulous craftsmanship. As a result, it offers a recognizable expression of Haut-Brion, with an emphasis on elegance, balance, and refinement.
The exceptional circumstances of the 2025 Bordeaux vintage
The 2025 growing season was characterized by drought, low yields, and very small grapes with a high concentration. Unlike some parts of the Médoc, there was hardly any rain in Pessac-Léognan in July, placing the vines under significant drought stress. Rain at the end of August ultimately brought just enough relief to complete ripening optimally.
The large temperature differences between day and night proved crucial for the quality of the vintage. As a result, the grapes retained their freshness and aromatic tension, while at the same time achieving excellent phenolic ripeness. Furthermore, the relatively low juice yield ensured high concentration and a deep color.
Due to the conditions of the growing season, Merlot plays a more important role in the blend in 2025 than usual. This gives the wine extra charm, accessibility, and texture, without losing the classic structure of Haut-Brion.
How does Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2025 taste?
The blend consists of 66.5% Merlot, 28.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5.2% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, the wine opens with aromas of dark cherries, plums, and blackcurrants, followed by nuances of spices, new leather notes, cocoa, cedarwood, and a subtle earthy undertone.
On the palate, Le Clarence reveals itself to be remarkably layered and harmonious. The ripe fruit is supported by fine tannins and a fresh structure that provides energy and length. The texture is soft and refined, yet at the same time, the wine possesses more backbone and tension than is often expected of a second wine.
The combination of accessibility and depth is striking. While many second wines are primarily aimed at early drinking pleasure, Le Clarence 2025 possesses a clear structure that allows it to continue developing for years to come. The finish is characterized by dark fruit, spices, minerality, and a subtle spicy note that lingers for a long time.
The style of 2025 closely aligns with that of the Grand Vin. The wine displays the same precision and balance, but in a slightly more accessible form. It is precisely for this reason that Le Clarence is often regarded as one of the most complete second wines of Bordeaux.
Grape varieties, vinification and aging
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is produced according to the same quality standards that apply to Château Haut-Brion. The grapes are carefully selected and vinified separately before the final blend is created.
The wine ages in French oak barrels, approximately 17% of which are new. This relatively modest use of new wood ensures that the emphasis remains on fruit, terroir expression, and refinement. The result is a wine that is both attractive when young and possesses sufficient structure for further development in the bottle.

Parker
(91-93) The 2025 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, a blend of 66.5% Merlot, 28.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5.2% Cabernet Franc, reveals a floral bouquet with pronounced dark fruit, evolving toward cassis and spice with aeration. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it’s built around a deep core of fruit and has more marked freshness on the finish than La Chapelle, lending it a more ethereal profile, enhanced by menthol notes that reinforce this sense of lift. Comparable in density and structure to La Chapelle, it remains somewhat reserved at this stage and will require patience.
The 2025 vintage at Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion formed under constraint rather than excess. Yields stayed low, close to 2024, at around 23 hectoliters per hectare for whites—exceptionally reduced—and 27 hectoliters per hectare for reds. Poor floral initiation defined the season early, especially for Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, with some parcels carrying little to no fruit. Clean flowering locked in that limited potential, and summer drought further reduced berry size, particularly in Pessac.
Rainfall arrived unevenly. A storm on June 13 dropped some 65 millimeters in a single day, but only over part of the appellation. Other sectors saw little impact. The Médoc received rain later, on July 24, which largely missed Pessac. The totals align on paper, but the timing drove variation in ripening.
Phenolic maturity was high, with IPT exceeding 100, indicating marked concentration. Harvest started early—August 27 at La Mission and September 1 at Haut-Brion—and finished around September 18.
The teams responded with control. They adjusted extraction, avoided excess and worked to retain balance. The wines come through as dense but fresh, structured but not severe. The tannins show restraint and precision. Haut-Brion delivers depth and authority; La Mission leans toward charm. Both capture the vintage’s brightness and fruit definition, with more clarity than 2022.

(95-96) Structured yet refined, with polished tannins that run the length of the wine. Dark berries, smoke and cedar on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with very integrated tannins. Classy second wine from Haut Brion.

Vinous
(92-94) The 2025 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is seamless and layered. Dark red-toned fruit, spice, new leather, mocha and plum race across the palate. Deep, ample and super expressive, Le Clarence has a ton to offer. This is very much the younger sibling of the Grand Vin. Drinking Window: 2030 - 2045.

(91-93) The 2025 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion has a little more comeliness than the La Chapelle de la Mission, perhaps due to the higher percentage of Merlot (66.5%). Dark cherries, sous-bois, a touch more minéralité coming through by direct comparison. Just a very marginal ash-like scent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, firm in the mouth, a tad more backbone than expected. Delineated and delivering quite a potent, granular-textured finish, you can feel the mouth tingling with red peppercorns on the aftertaste. Great potential and a very fine Deuxième Vin. Drinking Window: 2030 - 2048.

Third-generation winemaker Jean-Philippe Delmas explained, “There was no rain here in July, whereas there was in the Médoc, but we had more rainfall in August. We had 30 mm on August 28-29. We had very little juice, especially for the Cabernet Sauvignon, so there is more Merlot in the blend. The difference from 2003 is that we had more diurnal temperature variation—it was cooler at night in 2025, which allowed the vines to breathe. It gave the wines deeper colour despite shorter maceration and gentler extraction, with some record IPT levels, not that we are looking for that. We started picking the La Mission Haut-Brion a day before the rainfall, which means it is half a degree higher in alcohol; it is 13° for all the cuvées except the La Mission at 13.6%. Quintus is around 14%, as the vines suffered less due to clay soils, especially on the Grand Pontet [the former Saint-Émilion absorbed into Quintus] side of the property.”

Château Haut-Brion is located in the French municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful Gironde winery - it was here that the first Bordeaux was made from a single vineyard in the 17th century, first donated in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935, the winery was bought by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in the renovation of the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru, replacing the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family bought the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.
The vineyard covers an area of 51 hectares of which just over 48 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and just under 3 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).
