Winery

La Clarté de Haut-Brion is the second white wine of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, two iconic estates from Pessac-Léognan. This exceptional cuvée is composed of equal parts from both properties and thus benefits from two of Bordeaux's most prestigious terroirs. Although La Clarté is more accessible than the Grand Vins Blancs of both houses, the same precision is applied in the vineyard and cellar. The result is a white Bordeaux with remarkable precision, depth, and aging potential. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.

Origin and terroir

The grapes originate from the vineyards of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion in Pessac-Léognan. The soils consist primarily of gravel, sand, and clay, with a subsoil that ensures excellent drainage. This unique combination yields white wines with a striking balance between aromatic richness and freshness. The relatively warm climate of Graves is offset by the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean, allowing the grapes to retain their tension and aromatic refinement.

Grapes and vineyard management

The 2025 La Clarté de Haut-Brion consists of 76.5% Sémillon and 23.5% Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are carefully selected from the best plots not used for Grand Vin Blanc. Low yields and precise selection are practiced in the vineyard during the harvest. As a result, the grapes retain their concentration, freshness, and aromatic precision.

Vinification and aging

After manual harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed to preserve maximum aromatic purity. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, where temperature control ensures the retention of freshness and finesse. Subsequently, the wine ages on its fine lees. This sur lie aging contributes to additional structure, texture, and complexity. The use of wood remains refined and supports the fruit without being dominant.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a clear light yellow color with subtle golden reflections. On the nose, aromas of lemon, lime, white peach, and ripe pear emerge, complemented by spicy nuances, botanical notes, and light floral accents. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a round and enveloping texture. The combination of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and a striking dry extract creates tension and length. The finish is long, energetic, and refined, with fresh citrus accents and subtle minerality.

Style and character

La Clarté de Haut-Brion combines the richness of Sémillon with the liveliness of Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has a classic Bordeaux Blanc style with sufficient concentration and structure, yet remains fresh and refined. The result is a wine that is attractive both when young and can handle several years of bottle aging. The balance between ripe fruit, acidity, and minerality makes this cuvée particularly versatile.

Volume

The 2025 vintage in Pessac-Léognan produced white wines of great aromatic precision and excellent balance. The combination of ripe fruit and lively acidity creates a style that is immediately appealing, yet possesses sufficient structure for further development. This La Clarté is one of the most successful recent editions and clearly demonstrates the quality of both iconic estates.

Food and wine pairings

This white Bordeaux pairs excellently with shellfish, lobster, turbot, and grilled sea bass. Dishes with creamy sauces, poultry, and refined vegetarian preparations also complement the wine's structure beautifully. Thanks to its fresh acidity and aromatic character, it is also an excellent accompaniment to goat cheese and dishes with citrus accents.

Château Haut-Brion is located in the French municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful Gironde winery - it was here that the first Bordeaux was made from a single vineyard in the 17th century, first donated in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935, the winery was bought by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in the renovation of the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru, replacing the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family bought the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.

The vineyard covers an area of 51 hectares of which just over 48 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and just under 3 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).
