Château Gruaud Larose is one of the historical greats of Saint-Julien and was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. The estate boasts a history dating back to 1725 and celebrates its exceptional 300th anniversary in 2025. Few Bordeaux châteaux can look back on three centuries of virtually uninterrupted history on the same iconic terroir. To mark this anniversary, the château is releasing the 2025 with a special gold label, giving this vintage particular significance for collectors as well. Throughout the centuries, various families have contributed to the reputation of Gruaud Larose. Under the Merlaut family, owners since 1997, substantial investments have been made in quality, biodiversity, and agro-ecology. The focus is emphatically on Cabernet Sauvignon, in order to express the unique character of the Saint-Julien terroir as precisely as possible. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Origin, terroir and vintage 2025
Château Gruaud Larose is situated in Saint-Julien, in the heart of the Médoc, on deep Garonne gravel soils deposited over 600,000 years ago. These soils are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, providing tension, finesse, and a characteristic graphite-like minerality. The 2025 vintage was marked by extreme drought, with only approximately 700 mm of rainfall during the season. A mild winter resulted in early bud formation, followed by a warm summer that accelerated ripening. Thanks to the excellent drainage of the gravel soils and a meticulous vineyard management approach, the balance was maintained. The harvest began exceptionally early, the earliest of this century at Gruaud Larose, and was fully completed on September 20, before the autumn rains.
Grape varieties and vinification
The blend of Château Gruaud Larose 2025 consists of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc . Cabernet Sauvignon clearly dominates this vintage and forms the backbone of the wine, providing structure, freshness, and classic Saint-Julien tension. Merlot contributes roundness and texture, while Cabernet Franc adds extra finesse. The grapes were harvested entirely by hand and underwent four different rounds of selection, including optical sorting. Thanks to plot and micro-plot selection, each batch is vinified separately in small temperature-controlled wooden vats ranging from 55 to 130 hectoliters. Fermentation takes place between 24°C and 28°C, with daily tastings to precisely control extraction via remontage and pulsed air systems. The wine subsequently ages for eighteen months in French oak barrels.
Style, scent and taste
Gruaud Larose 2025 immediately shows why this vintage makes such an impression. On the nose, dark berries, cassis, and plums open up together with violets, graphite, and subtle notes of pencil shavings. Behind this follow layers of licorice, mocha, lavender, and a refined spiciness that give the wine extra depth.
On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be rich, layered, and remarkably harmonious. Antonio Galloni describes the wine as immediately expressive, with dark fruit notes, graphite, mocha, and lavender coming together impressively. At the same time, he emphasizes that the wine will need plenty of time to fully blossom. Despite the concentration, the tannins appear completely relaxed and refined.
William Kelley specifically praises the energy, the depth of the fruit, and the powdery tannins that give the wine its aristocratic texture. The combination of power and suppleness is immediately striking. Although the wine has a distinct core of dark fruit, it remains elegant and classic Saint-Julien in character. The finish is long, refined, and mineral, with cassis, spices, and graphite lingering slowly.
Development and storage potential
Château Gruaud Larose 2025 is built for long aging. The combination of high Cabernet Sauvignon percentages, deep concentration, and refined tannins ensures impressive aging potential . In its youth, the wine primarily displays power and concentration, but the greatest complexity will only become apparent after prolonged bottle aging.
Over the years, notes of cigar box, cedar, forest floor, dried herbs, and graphite will continue to develop. Antonio Galloni advises patience, as he believes the wine needs time to shed its “baby fat.” A drinking window from around 2065 seems very realistic.
Summary of professional reviews
95-97 points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous: describes the wine as rich, deep, and exotic with dark fruit, graphite, licorice, mocha, and lavender, but emphasizes that extensive cellar aging is required. 94-96 points – William Kelley, Wine Advocate: praises the combination of cassis, plums, violets, energy, and refined powdery tannins. Kelley calls the balance and suppleness particularly impressive for such a concentrated wine. The full review texts can be found in the tab: Professional reviews.

Parker
Wine Advocate 92-94/100 : “The 2024 Gruaud Larose shows excellent potential, bursting with notes of cassis, pencil shavings, iris and violets. Medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, it's ample and pure, with a precise, refined pro-life and good persistence on the finish. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it is the fruit of a growing season defined by fully 30 organic phytosanitary treatments and a harvest that concluded on October 8. It checks in at 12.4% alcohol and pH 3.77 (for Gruaud, a rather low number)”.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Gruaud Larose is very fine. Dark and ample, with gorgeous presence, the 2024 has so much to offer. Dark blue/purplish fruit, new leather, gravel, spice, lavender and dried herbs build effortlessly. Readers will find a Saint-Julien endowed with notable textural depth. The finish is perhaps just a touch narrow, but élevage may very well help with that.
