Winery Château Duhart-Milon

Château Duhart-Milon belongs to the historic Grand Cru Classés of Pauillac and is part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). The château is situated directly next to Château Lafite Rothschild and shares the same philosophy of precision, terroir expression, and understated elegance. Duhart-Milon was formerly known as a wine that often required many years of bottle aging, but under the leadership of Technical Director Eric Kohler, the style has become more refined and accessible without losing the classic Pauillac character. The focus is distinctly on balance, freshness, and terroir. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château Duhart-Milon is located in Pauillac, one of the most famous appellations of the Médoc. The vineyards are situated on deep, gravelly soils above limestone and clay, a terroir particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The gravel soils provide excellent drainage and heat retention, while clay helps to retain moisture in dry years. The 2025 vintage experienced a dry and warm summer, but without the extremes of, for example, 2022. Thanks to careful vineyard management, the vines remained well-balanced. In the tasting sheet, the château emphasizes that the carefully adapted approach in the vineyard, with revised plant management, pruning, and ground cover, clearly paid off in 2025, especially on the gravelly terroirs. The grapes reached excellent ripeness without excessive alcohol. The final alcohol percentage remained limited to just 12.5%, remarkably classic for a warm vintage.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The Château Duhart-Milon 2025 blend consists of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, providing structure, freshness, and classic Pauillac precision, while Merlot adds extra suppleness and roundness. The grapes came from carefully selected plots on the classic gravel soils of Pauillac. In 2025, the focus was strongly on precision in the vineyard. According to the château, planting density, pruning method, and ground cover were adapted to the conditions per plot, with the aim of maintaining maximum balance and terroir expression. The harvest took place between September 4 and 22 under excellent conditions.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest began on September 4 and was completed on September 22. Thanks to healthy grapes and even ripening, work could be carried out plot by plot with great precision. Only optimally ripe fruit was selected.

The vinification was tailored to the character of the vintage. The aim was to preserve finesse and balance without over-extracting the natural concentration of 2025. The wine subsequently undergoes aging in French oak barrels, where the influence of the wood remains supportive and is not dominant.

Under Eric Kohler, Duhart-Milon is moving increasingly towards a refined, classically structured style with softer tannins and greater accessibility in youth, while retaining the typical Pauillac character.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 Château Duhart-Milon opens refined and classic, with aromas of wild blueberries, cassis, and dark blackberries, complemented by floral nuances of rose petals and subtle notes of orange zest. As the wine breathes, more earthy accents of forest floor, graphite, and a light spiciness typical of Pauillac emerge.

Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a strikingly pure and polished style. The texture feels smooth and harmonious, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively. Ripe dark fruit is supported by subtle notes of cocoa, dried meat, earth, and fine spices, without the wine feeling heavy or massive.

What stands out is the classic balance of this vintage. Despite the ripeness, the wine remains refined, energetic, and precise. The tannins are ripe and beautifully integrated, with just enough grip towards the finish. The aftertaste is long and classic Pauillac, with dark fruit, graphite, and forest floor that linger beautifully.
