Winery Château Duhart-Milon

Château Duhart-Milon is one of the well-known properties of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and is particularly famous for its classic Pauillac. With Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon, the château has also been showcasing a remarkably refined white wine for several years. This relatively young cuvée comes from re-grafted vineyards on cooler, calcareous soils and reveals a different, more restrained side of Bordeaux. Under the leadership of Eric Kohler, there is a strong focus on precision, terroir expression, and accessibility without loss of identity. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon comes from calcareous, late-ripening plots in the Médoc, an unusual but promising location for dry white Bordeaux. The combination of limestone and cooler exposure ensures freshness, tension, and aromatic precision, while the longer aging time provides extra depth. The 2025 vintage experienced a relatively dry and warm summer, but from August onwards, the white grapes in particular benefited from ideal ripening conditions. The Sémillon, in particular, achieved excellent phenolic ripeness without loss of freshness. Thanks to the cooler terroirs, the wine remained energetic and refined, despite the warm conditions of the growing season.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The blend of Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon 2025 consists of 68% Sémillon, 31% Sauvignon Blanc, and 1% Sauvignon Gris. Sémillon forms the heart of the wine, providing texture, depth, and a slightly creamy structure, while Sauvignon Blanc adds tension, citrus, and aromatic refinement. The small amount of Sauvignon Gris provides additional aromatic nuance.

This wine is now the fifth vintage from re-grafted vines on cooler, calcareous soils. The choice of these terroirs proved particularly successful and results in a style distinguished by freshness, tension, and refinement.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The white grape harvest took place between August 21 and September 1, relatively early to optimally preserve aromatic precision and fresh acidity. Only perfectly ripe grapes were selected. Vinification focuses on purity and balance. Approximately 15% of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, which subtly adds extra texture and softness without losing freshness. Additionally, aging on the fine lees provides extra depth and a slightly creamy complexity. Under the leadership of Eric Kohler, Duhart-Milon consciously opts for a more refined and early-accessible style, without abandoning the classic character of the château. Furthermore, the relatively low alcohol level of the vintage is noteworthy.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon opens refined and precise, with aromas of green apple, white blossom, and ripe pear. Alongside this are subtle notes of citrus, fresh herbs, and a light stony minerality that clearly seems to originate from the calcareous soils.

Beautifully balanced on the palate, with fresh acidity and a refined texture. The relatively high proportion of Sémillon lends extra weight and a subtle umami-like depth, while Sauvignon Blanc retains tension and freshness. Aging on the fine lees adds extra layers without being dominant. Towards the finish, nuances of candied ginger, white pepper, and subtle spiciness emerge. The style remains elegant and refined, with a long, fresh finish that feels remarkably precise.

Development and drinking window

The 2025 Le Blanc de Duhart-Milon shows its appeal early on, but also possesses excellent aging potential. Thanks to the combination of freshness, texture, and chalky tension, the wine will deepen further in the coming years. According to Neal Martin, the drinking window lies between 2028 and 2038. In the first few years, the emphasis will be on fresh fruit and tension, after which more complexity and tertiary nuances will emerge.
