Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou 2025 demonstrates why the second wine from this famous Saint-Julien estate is among the strongest in the appellation. The wine combines the recognizable elegance and precision of Ducru-Beaucaillou with a more accessible and fruit-driven character. In 2025, this results in a strikingly harmonious wine with great juiciness, refinement, and immediate appeal.

Le Petit Ducru: the second wine of Ducru-Beaucaillou

Le Petit Ducru comes from the same prestigious region as Château Ducru-Beaucaillou and benefits from the same philosophy in the vineyard and cellar. The wine is made from carefully selected plots that yield a more accessible and youthful expression of Saint-Julien, without deviating from the style and quality for which the château is known.

Under the direction of Bruno Borie, great attention is also paid to plot selection, precise harvest times, and a vinification focused on fruit expression and balance for Le Petit Ducru. As a result, the wine offers an authentic introduction to the style of Ducru-Beaucaillou.

The exceptional circumstances of the 2025 Bordeaux vintage

As with the Grand Vin, 2025 was characterized by an early growing season, limited yields, and a dry summer. The combination of small berries, low yields, and optimal ripening resulted in grapes with high concentration and aromatic intensity.

Despite the warm conditions, freshness was preserved thanks to the deep gravel soils of Saint-Julien and the cooling influence of the Gironde. Rain at the end of August refined the skins and ensured a balanced completion of the ripening. The result is a wine with ripe fruit, but without overripeness or heaviness.

The blend consists of 83% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot. As a result, Le Petit Ducru in 2025 has a slightly rounder and more accessible profile than the Grand Vin, while the structure and freshness of Saint-Julien remain clearly present.

How does Le Petit Ducru 2025 taste?

The nose opens with expressive aromas of black cherries, red plums, cassis, and dark forest fruits. As the wine develops, nuances of violets, graphite, liquorice, dried herbs, and subtle spices emerge. The aromatic intensity is remarkably high for a second wine.

On the palate, Le Petit Ducru presents itself as supple, juicy, and harmonious. The fruit takes center stage, supported by ripe tannins and a fresh structure that provides energy and length. The texture is round without becoming heavy, while the tension present gives the wine its precision.

What makes this vintage particularly attractive is the combination of immediate drinking pleasure and classic Saint-Julien structure. Several tasters highlight the purity of the fruit, the fine balance, and the striking charm of the wine. Despite the concentration, everything remains elegant and controlled.

The finish is characterized by ripe cherries, dark berries, subtle spices, and a light mineral touch. As a result, the wine retains sufficient complexity to remain interesting even after several years of bottle aging.

Grape varieties, vinification and aging

The vinification follows the same meticulous approach applied at Ducru-Beaucaillou. The grapes are harvested plot by plot and carefully selected. During fermentation, the emphasis is on gentle extraction to preserve fruit expression and finesse.

The wine ages in oak barrels for approximately twelve months. This relatively modest aging supports the structure without dominating the fruit. As a result, the youthful and expressive character of Le Petit Ducru is fully preserved.

The Borie family has now owned this stately château for three generations, overlooking the Gironde. Since he took over the château in 2003, Bruno Borie has had only one goal: to make Ducru-Beaucaillou one of the best wines in the Médoc. The vineyards are planted with cabernet sauvignon (70%) and merlot (30%). As the name of the château implies, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is blessed with a grand pebble-rich terroir that produces perfect cabernet sauvignon. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from its "beautiful pebbles" ("beaux Cailloux", in French) which geologists less romantically refer to as Gunzian gravel. These quartz pebbles were deposited by the ancient Garonne at the beginning of the early Quaternary, some two million years ago. It is enough to take a walk through the vineyards to find rich lithological finds. Lydian jasper from the Pyrenees, flint, quartz, agatoids ... This Gunzian gravel creates soils poor in plant nutrients. But it is precisely their agricultural scarcity that guarantees the qualitative excellence of the wines. A choice from nature.

At Ducru-Beaucaillou, excellence is formed inch by inch thanks to an understanding of what the vines have to offer. Experience, intuition, asking questions, for a symbiosis with Mother Earth; people only pass through these noble terroirs. Since nature is a "subject of law", every procedure in the vineyard respects the entire ecosystem: herbicides have been abandoned in favor of mechanical weeds and judicious turf; replacing chemical fertilizers with manure and quality compost; insecticides with pheromones to control vine moths or kaolin clay to lure the green locust. Measures to facilitate aeration and sun exposure of the bunches, to avoid Botrytis and, if applicable, bacilli. Constant monitoring of available nitrogen before harvest. Reasonable viticulture, which earned the property ISO 14001 certification in 2016, supplemented with HVE3 certification (high environmental value level 3) since 2017.
