EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED SPRING 2028

Winery Château Carbonnieux

Château Carbonnieux belongs to the historic Grand Cru Classés of Graves and is considered one of the most established names of Pessac-Léognan. The estate is located in Léognan and has a history dating back to the thirteenth century. Since the Perrin family took over the château in 1956, a strong emphasis has been placed on quality and terroir expression. Carbonnieux is known for classic Bordeaux with refinement, freshness, and aging potential. In recent years, the château has also shown greater precision and consistency, with both red and white wines. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château Carbonnieux is situated in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, on a terroir of deep gravel soils interspersed with clay and calcareous sublayers. This combination ensures optimal drainage and heat retention, while retaining sufficient moisture during warmer years. Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, benefits from the gravelly soils here, while Merlot benefits more from clay influences.

The 2025 vintage featured an early and relatively dry vegetative cycle. A dry spring was followed by a warm summer with very limited rainfall. The heat resulted in small grapes with high aromatic concentration and ripe tannins, while rain in July helped ensure homogeneous ripening. The relatively low yields provided extra depth, but without loss of freshness or precision. The harvest took place between September 5 and 24 under excellent conditions. Thanks to healthy grapes and early ripening, harvesting could be carried out with great precision, resulting in a remarkably harmonious style.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The blend of Château Carbonnieux Rouge 2025 consists of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. The equal distribution between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot creates a special balance between structure and suppleness. Cabernet Sauvignon provides tension, freshness, and length, while Merlot adds ripe fruit and roundness. Cabernet Franc brings aromatic lift and floral nuances, while Petit Verdot provides extra spiciness and depth. The red vineyards cover approximately 55 hectares, and the average age of the vines is around 26 years. Yields in 2025 remained limited to approximately 28 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in extra concentration and ripe phenolic structure.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The grapes were harvested entirely by hand between September 4 and 24 and rigorously selected. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for approximately ten days, followed by a maceration of about fifteen days. The relatively gentle extraction ensured refinement and precision, befitting the character of the vintage.

After fermentation, the wine ages for approximately fourteen months in 225-liter French oak barrels, of which about 20% are new. This relatively restrained oak aging supports the structure without dominating the freshness and aromatic clarity of the fruit.

What stands out about Carbonnieux's approach is the emphasis on purity and drinkability, where concentration never comes at the expense of elegance.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 Château Carbonnieux Rouge opens bright and expressive, with aromas of violets, red currants, raspberries, and cassis. As the wine opens up, subtle notes of dark plums, black pepper, graphite, wet stones, and light earthy nuances of forest floor emerge.

On the palate, medium-bodied and remarkably refined, with a beautiful balance between freshness and texture. Ripe black and red fruits are supported by lively acidity and finely integrated tannins. The texture feels polished and smooth, without loss of tension or precision.

The wine combines a classic Pessac-Léognan structure with striking elegance. Subtle notes of cocoa, spices, and a light smokiness add extra depth, while graphite and flint become increasingly prominent towards the finish. The aftertaste is long, juicy, and harmonious, with plenty of freshness and fine mineral precision.

What stands out most about the 2025 is how complete the wine feels. Several critics call this one of the best Carbonnieux Rouge in a long time, thanks to the combination of balance, clarity, and terroir expression.

Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest and largest wine estates in the Bordeaux region. The history extends over almost 8 centuries and the vineyard over a hundred hectares. The entire vineyard has belonged to the Perrin family for four generations and is located around the castle on top of a beautiful gravel hill. All wines produced depend on the Pessac-Léognan AOP. The vines, grown in sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture, are intended exclusively for the production of red and dry white wines, both of which are qualified as Grands Crus Classés de Graves.

Chateau Carbonnieux has two Graves classifications for both its red and white wines. These are Grand Cru Classé and Grand Vin de Graves. The red wines are the Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Petit Verdot is used for the structure of the Grand Vin, but not for the Grand Cru Classé. The white wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Historically, Chateau Carbonnieux was better known for its white wines than its red wines.

In addition to the main wines, Carbonnieux produces two second wines: La Croix de Carbonnieux, made from the same plots as the grand vin; and Château Tour Léognan, made from young vines.
