Château Carbonnieux Winery
Château Carbonnieux is one of Pessac-Léognan's historic landmarks, boasting a winemaking history dating back to the 13th century. Since the 1950s, the estate has been run by the Perrin family, who brought the château international acclaim with both red and white wines. Carbonnieux is known for its consistent style, which emphasizes freshness, balance, and terroir expression, with a clear focus on sustainable viticulture and meticulous vineyard selection.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in the southern part of Pessac-Léognan, on typical Graves soils of gravel with clay and sand in the subsoil. This composition ensures good drainage and contributes to the wine's tension and minerality. The 2022 vintage was characterized by a dry and warm growing season, resulting in ripe grapes with concentrated aromas, while the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean helped retain freshness.
Vineyards and grape varieties
Carbonnieux Blanc 2022 is a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon. Sauvignon Blanc determines the aromatic profile and fresh tension, while Sémillon provides roundness, texture, and length. The plots are harvested separately to achieve optimal ripeness and balance in the final blend.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes are harvested when aromatic expression and acidity are in balance. Vinification focuses on precision and preserving freshness, with controlled fermentation and a careful approach to clearly express both fruit and terroir. Maturation supports the wine's structure without overpowering its fresh character.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a clear, light golden yellow color. The nose reveals aromas of boxwood, white flowers, and citrus, complemented by spicy notes and ripe pear. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a layered structure and remarkable tension. Flavors of citrus peel, stone fruit, and a pronounced mineral note are supported by lively acidity. The finish is long, tight, and slightly bitter, giving the wine a distinctly gastronomic character.
Development and drinking window
Several drinking windows are mentioned for this vintage. Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate (93 points) sees a development period of approximately 2026 to 2037. Antonio Galloni of Vinous (91-93 points) describes the wine as tight and salty in style, suitable for drinking from a young age, with potential until around 2030. The wine combines immediate appeal with sufficient structure for further development.
Summary of professional reviews
Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate rated the 2022 Carbonnieux Blanc 93 points, praising its depth, balance, and long, refreshing finish. Antonio Galloni of Vinous rated the wine 91–93 points, emphasizing its taut, mineral-driven character with distinct salinity and precision.

The 2025 Carbonnieux is a fine success, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis and flowers, accented by delicate spice. Medium- to full-bodied, dense, layered and well balanced, it is built around a core of fruit with good depth and framed by velvety, precise tannins, concluding with a long, perfumed and ethereal finish. This is a compelling value.

A very bright wine with beautiful balance and freshness. Violets, raspberries and currants on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with clarity and fine, integrated tannins. Hints of flint and graphite at the end. One of the best Carbonnieux in a long time. 45% merlot, 45% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot.

From: Hot Body, Cold Blood: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur (May 2026)
The 2025 Carbonnieux has a well-defined bouquet with lifted blackberry, cassis and violet scents, showing more harmony and focus than previous vintages that had left me a little underwhelmed. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, upfront black fruit laced with graphite and black pepper towards the finish. This is a step in the right direction for Carbonnieux after a decidedly mixed period.

Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest and largest wine estates in the Bordeaux region. The history extends over almost 8 centuries and the vineyard over a hundred hectares. The entire vineyard has belonged to the Perrin family for four generations and is located around the castle on top of a beautiful gravel hill. All wines produced depend on the Pessac-Léognan AOP. The vines, grown in sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture, are intended exclusively for the production of red and dry white wines, both of which are qualified as Grands Crus Classés de Graves.
Chateau Carbonnieux has two Graves classifications for both its red and white wines. These are Grand Cru Classé and Grand Vin de Graves. The red wines are the Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Petit Verdot is used for the structure of the Grand Vin, but not for the Grand Cru Classé. The white wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Historically, Chateau Carbonnieux was better known for its white wines than its red wines.
In addition to the main wines, Carbonnieux produces two second wines: La Croix de Carbonnieux, made from the same plots as the grand vin; and Château Tour Léognan, made from young vines.
