Winery Château Carbonnieux

Château Carbonnieux belongs to the historic Grand Cru Classés of Graves and is regarded as one of the most famous producers of dry white Bordeaux. The estate is located in Léognan and has a history dating back to the thirteenth century. Since 1956, the château has been managed by the Perrin family, who have further developed Carbonnieux into a firm reference in Pessac-Léognan. The white wines, in particular, enjoy great international renown thanks to their combination of aromatic precision, tension, and aging potential. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château Carbonnieux is situated in Pessac-Léognan, south of Bordeaux, on a terroir of gravel, limestone, and clay. This combination ensures both freshness and concentration. The gravel soils promote drainage and heat retention, while limestone and clay contribute to tension and aromatic precision.

The 2025 vintage experienced an early and relatively dry vegetative cycle. After a mild winter, a dry spring ensured early development of the vines. The summer was hot and virtually dry, with small berries providing high concentration and aromatic intensity. Rain in July brought just enough cooling and helped ensure homogeneous ripening. A notable feature of 2025 is that the grapes reached ripeness without loss of freshness, maintaining an exceptionally good balance.

The harvest of the white grapes began as early as August 19, one of the earliest harvests ever at Carbonnieux. Despite the heat, the juices remained precise, aromatic, and remarkably energetic.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The blend of Château Carbonnieux Blanc 2025 consists of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Sémillon. Sauvignon Blanc brings freshness, tension, and aromatic lift, while Sémillon adds depth, texture, and extra complexity. The white vineyards cover approximately 45 hectares, and the average age of the vines is around 30 years. The low yield of about 25 hectoliters per hectare in 2025 ensured extra concentration and aromatic precision. The estate works plot-by-plot, allowing each component of the blend to be optimized individually.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest took place between August 19 and September 4 and was performed entirely by hand. The grapes were carefully selected and subsequently pressed slowly and gently pneumatically under inert gas to preserve maximum aromatic purity. After cold settling, fermentation followed by plot, distributed across 23 different lots. The wine ages for approximately ten months with bâtonnage, partly in 225- and 400-liter French oak barrels and partly in larger vats. Only 10% new wood is used, ensuring that freshness and terroir expression remain central. This relatively restrained aging gives the wine extra texture without masking the tension and precision of the fruit.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 Château Carbonnieux Blanc opens refined and expressive with aromas of ripe pear, dried lemon peel, lime, and apple, complemented by notes of white flowers, fresh herbs, and subtle hints of tomato leaf, sage, and mint. As the wine breathes, nuances of lemon cream, spices, and a light waxy depth emerge, clearly derived from the high contribution of Sémillon.

On the palate, full and layered, yet strikingly energetic. The wine combines texture with tension in a beautiful way. Ripe citrus and white stone fruit are supported by a refined spiciness and a mineral core of wet stones and light salinity. The acidity is clear and precise, ensuring the wine never feels heavy despite its richness. The Sémillon provides extra volume and a slightly waxy mouthfeel, while Sauvignon Blanc ensures freshness, length, and precision. Towards the finish, subtle notes of white pepper, lemon peel, and herbs emerge. The finale is long, layered, and remarkably refined, with great tension and an almost salty precision.

Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest and largest wine estates in the Bordeaux region. The history extends over almost 8 centuries and the vineyard over a hundred hectares. The entire vineyard has belonged to the Perrin family for four generations and is located around the castle on top of a beautiful gravel hill. All wines produced depend on the Pessac-Léognan AOP. The vines, grown in sustainable and environmentally responsible agriculture, are intended exclusively for the production of red and dry white wines, both of which are qualified as Grands Crus Classés de Graves.

Chateau Carbonnieux has two Graves classifications for both its red and white wines. These are Grand Cru Classé and Grand Vin de Graves. The red wines are the Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Petit Verdot is used for the structure of the Grand Vin, but not for the Grand Cru Classé. The white wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Historically, Chateau Carbonnieux was better known for its white wines than its red wines.

In addition to the main wines, Carbonnieux produces two second wines: La Croix de Carbonnieux, made from the same plots as the grand vin; and Château Tour Léognan, made from young vines.
