In the beautiful Constantia region, owner Lars Maack, together with winemaker Brad Paton, produces essentially only top-segment wines: fresh and full-bodied wines. The slow-ripening climatic conditions, with cold nights and modest daytime temperatures, translate into fresh, crisp, and full-bodied wines.
The Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc is a line from their top series. The Sauvignon Blanc is 100% aged in stainless steel, but Sur Lie and at a cool temperature so that the wine can ripen and age slowly. This ensures that this wine can become even finer with some aging in the bottle (6 years is no problem). In the glass, the Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc has a pale lemon-yellow color. This is a very beautiful Sauvignon Blanc with enormous complexity and aromas of gooseberries, green pepper, green figs, and grassy notes. The lovely acidity gives it a wonderfully fresh and dry character. Long, lingering finish.
The Great Hamersma: 9-
Not entirely unexpected: a bright green version. It is a style embraced by several winemakers in South Africa. It gives their whites a different kick than their counterparts from the Loire or those ever-present, flamboyant types from New Zealand. Thus: green apple, green as grass, green herbs, green tomatoes, green (yet ripe) bell pepper, not-too-ripe gooseberries, and yuzu acidity, crispness, and flavor.
FUN FACT: The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and if you come to pick up the wine, you often receive a nice discount . 1. Goat cheese salad with apple and walnuts
The creamy, slightly salty goat cheese contrasts beautifully with the freshness of the wine, while the apple and walnuts create a playful sweet-nutty balance.
2. Sushi with cucumber and salmon
The salty and delicate flavors of sushi gain extra clarity from the citrus and minerality in the wine. Cucumber and wasabi remain beautifully balanced.
3. Pasta with lemon cream sauce and peas
The wine's fresh acidity keeps the creaminess light and lively. The peas enhance the green, herbaceous character of the Sauvignon Blanc.
4. Thai green curry with tofu and fresh basil
A combination of spiciness and freshness. The wine refreshes against the heat of the curry and complements the aromas of fresh herbs well.
5. Seared scallops with dashi and lime leaf oil
Soft, salty flavors with a hint of citrus create an elegant harmony with the wine. The umami of the dashi adds extra layering to the pairing.
6. Burrata with white peach, tarragon and crispy pancetta
The creamy burrata is enlivened by the juicy fruit and aromatic herbs. The salty pancetta provides tension and contrast without overpowering.

The history of the South African winery Buitenverwachting goes back to 1773. Wijnhuis Buitenverwachting introduced the concept of environmentally friendly agriculture, which is better for the land, the worker and less pollution. From 1773, this winery has had no fewer than 16 owners, some of whom have faced many debts.
Despite this history, the winery flourished in 1825, led by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the famous Henry of Constantia. In 1981, when the winery was owned by the Mueller family, the vineyards were explored, which led to extensive replanting of the various vineyards. This led to the largest harvest ever for Buitenverwachting in 1985. The winery has since undergone many modernizations, including a completely renovated winery.
