2024 Velenosi Brecciarolo Rosso Piceno Superiore

Velenosi is one of the best-known producers from the Marche region and was founded in 1984 by Angela and Ercole Velenosi. The house quickly grew into a major name in Central Italy, with a clear focus on local grape varieties and modern winemaking techniques.

Velenosi's style is accessible and precise, with a strong focus on fruit expression and balance. The wines combine ripeness with freshness, making them versatile. Origin and terroir

Rosso Piceno Superiore comes from the southern Marche, an area with rolling hills between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. This location ensures a combination of warm days and cooling influences from the sea and mountains.

The soils consist of clay and limestone, which provides structure and sufficient freshness. This terroir is ideal for grapes such as Montepulciano and Sangiovese, which ripen here but retain their vibrancy.

Grapes and vineyard management

The 2024 Brecciarolo Rosso Piceno Superiore is made from 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese. Montepulciano provides color, ripe fruit, and a soft structure, while Sangiovese adds freshness, acidity, and a lightly spicy character.

The grapes are carefully selected from various plots, with the aim of maintaining a consistent style in which fruit and balance take center stage.

Vinification and aging

After the harvest, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Vinification focuses on preserving fruit and freshness, with sufficient extraction to provide structure and depth. A portion of the wine ages briefly in wood, which adds extra roundness and a subtle spicy note without overpowering the fruit. As a result, the wine remains accessible and immediately drinkable.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a deep ruby red color. The aroma reveals notes of ripe blackberries and blackcurrants, complemented by spicy and slightly woody accents such as cedar and a hint of cocoa. On the palate, the wine is smooth and lively. The dark fruit is supported by fresh acidity and a light spiciness. The structure is soft, with fine tannins that provide grip without becoming heavy. The finish is fresh and persistent, with a subtle hint of cocoa and spices.

The Brecciarolo is a modern interpretation of Rosso Piceno. It combines ripe fruit with freshness and a light structure, keeping it accessible yet possessing sufficient depth. This is a wine that appeals immediately, but also has enough character to remain interesting. The balance between Montepulciano and Sangiovese creates a harmonious whole.
